Emily remembers her first bad headache: It was really scary. The pain was unbelievable, and she felt like she was going to vomit. Emily had no idea what was happening. The headaches struck once a month, then once a week. So Emily's mom arranged for her to see a doctor. The doctor asked Emily some questions about her headache pain and what she ate or did just before the headaches started. He also wanted to know if anyone in Emily's family had headaches. Her mom said she had had them as a teen. The doctor did a thorough physical exam and ran some tests. It turned out that Emily had migraines. The doctor prescribed medication for Emily's headaches and taught her things to do to avoid them. What Makes a Headache a Migraine?
Almost everyone gets headaches. You might feel throbbing in the front of your head during a cold or bout with the flu , for example. Or you might feel pain in your temples or at the back of your head from a tension headache after a busy day. Most regular headaches produce a dull pain around the front, top, and sides of your head, almost like someone stretched a rubber band around it. A migraine is different. Doctors define it as a recurrent headache that has additional symptoms. The pain is often throbbing and on one or both sides of the head. People with migraines often feel dizzy or sick to their stomachs. They may be sensitive to light, noise, or smells. In a few people, migraines can also cause

Migraines - Headache The vascular system and its influence under stimuli of the autonomic or neurovegetative nervous system play an extremely important role, not only in Neurootology, but also in the origin of severe headache or migraine. Every modification in capillary diameter produces nourishment disorders at cell level modifying its functions. Changes in capillary diameter could be the result of vessels dilation phenomena as it takes place in hypotensions, or of vessels spasms as it should be the case of blood hypertension. From our Data Bank analysis, it becomes evident that 57,89% of neurootological patients present haemodynamical alterations in capillaries, 29,57% corresponding to hypertension phenomena or spasticity and 28,32% to hypotension phenomena or capillary dilations. On top of this, 42% of patients consult on severe headaches, migraine or cephaleas, associate or not to other neurootological symptoms. On those patients showing migraine or severe headaches the study on cerebral haemodynamics is strictly applied by means of USD-Transcranial and of the USD-Extracranial ,thus issuing a diagnosis on the sort and features of cerebral vascular disorders.

What Sarah Blake didn t understand about migraine led to several years ofundiagnosedand uncontrolledsymptoms.

GROWING STRONG IN SPITE OF MIGRAINE
Migraine is perhaps one of the most misunderstood conditions I know about. It is commonly thought of as a type of headache, and it certainly isn't thought of as disabling. It can be disabling, and it isn't just a headache. I have put this site together to help people understand migraine more fully and learn how to live with it and help loved ones live with it.
The Mystery Symptoms
In 1986, I was chosen to participate in a program for gifted and talented youth at the Texas School for the Blind. At first, I balked, remembering my previous experience there. But perhaps things had changed. In any case, I was older now and more able to speak up for myself. Besides, I could take a cooking class. I learned my way around campus easily using my cane as well as visual landmarks. I traveled from "my house," which I shared with four other girls, to the classroom building, the dining hall, the recreation center, and dormitories where friends were staying. But one afternoon, I encountered a problem while traveling. I froze. If I had become lost, I would have been able to think and retrace my steps. But I could not retrace my stepsand I wasn't lost. I knew exactly where I was. I was approaching the bridge under the trees, on my way to the dorms to see friends. But I couldn't see the shadow of the trees. I couldn't see the contrast between the color of the bridge and the color of the sidewalk. I couldn't see the grass on either side of me. The sun was beating down on me, but I couldn't see it either. I couldn't see anything.

The section Migraine Art , edited by Klaus Podoll MD, is a unique presentation of artistic works as a medium to express and communicate those experiences which occur as signs and symptoms of migraine, a condition that affects 5-10 % of the population.

Classifying and understanding the migraine aura not only helps the patients but might provide one avenue for discovering human brain functioning in cognitive and psychological processes. The section Pathomechanisms , edited by Markus Dahlem PhD, is devoted to the study of pathophysiological mechanisms of migraine aura using various methods ranging from non-invasive neuroimaging to simulations with neural networks. We are a non-profit organization. One of our most important goals is to provide material that helps patients to recognize and understand their neurological symptoms during migraine. The information on this site is designed to support, not replace, the relationship that exists between a patient and his/her physician. We do not provide or comment on help in migraine treatment, in particular medication or other forms of migraine pain relief. Authors: Markus Dahlem and Klaus Podoll
