What causes migraine headaches?
Migraine headaches seem to be caused in part by changes in the level of a body chemical called serotonin. Serotonin plays many roles in the body, and it can have an effect on the blood vessels. When serotonin levels are high, blood vessels constrict (shrink). When serotonin levels fall, the blood vessels dilate (swell). This swelling can cause pain or other problems. Many things can affect the level of serotonin in your body, including your level of blood sugar, certain foods and changes in your estrogen level if you're a woman. Return to top
What does a migraine feel like?
The pain of a migraine headache can be intense. It can get in the way of your daily activities. Migraines aren't the same in all people. Possible symptoms of migraines are listed in the box below. You may also have a "premonition" several hours to a day before your headache starts. Premonitions are feelings you get that can signal a migraine is coming. These feelings can include intense energy, fatigue, food cravings and mood changes.

A majority of sufferers are women, half of whom relate their migraine attacks to their hormonal cycle. What is migraine?
There are two types: Migraine without an aura (common migraine) This consists of a severe, throbbing headache, usually located on one side, with abdominal symptoms including loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, dislike of food, constipation or diarrhoea. This affects about nine out of 10 sufferers. Sufferers may also experience sensitivity to smell, light and noise, which leads them to rest in a quiet, darkened room. Migraine with aura (classical migraine) The headache is preceded by visual disturbances such as flashing lights, zig zag lines and blind spots, or tingling limbs. The average length of a migraine attack is 22 hours and sufferers generally feel washed out for another one to two days afterwards.

It seems some migraines are triggered - or exacerbated - by opposite surfaces within the sinuses or nasal cavities pressing against each other. The brain is confused into interpreting the stimulation as a headache. New Jersey researchers found endoscopic nasal surgery on 21 migraine sufferers halved the number of days they had headaches and they were less severe. The study, by Christ Hospital in Jersey City, New Jersey, is published in the journal Cephalagia. We believe a good percentage of patients whose migraines ares linked to intranasal contact points problems can be cured by this operation
Dr Fereidoon Behin It has been known that when opposite surfaces in the nasal cavity touch and press against each other they stimulate one of the main nerves in the face called the trigeminal nerve; which in turn causes secretion of a special substance that is irritant to the nasal tissue. When this occurs it has known in certain instances to confuse the brain into interpreting the stimulation as a headache - a phenomenon known as referred pain.

Ocular Migraine The picture above* shows the progression of a characteristic ocular migraine
Ocular Migraine is a variant of migraine that is not uncommon. It is believed to be caused by the same mechanism as classical migraine; vascular spasm. Instead of the spasm affecting the surface of the brain, these episodes affect the ocular blood supply or the blood supply to the vision center in the brain. Typically, these episodes begin with a visual disturbance that begins in the peripheral vision. It often consists of a semi-circular, jagged, shimmering light, which enlarges and becomes more central. This disturbance usually obscures the vision within the jagged area. The light is often described a pale pastel in color. Return to Flashing Lights Return Home

Migraine Headache
Medical Author: Dennis Lee, M.D.
Medical Editors: Harley I. Kornblum, M.D., Ph.D. Jay W. Marks, M.D. What is a migraine headache?
A migraine headache is a form of vascular headache. Migraine headache is caused by a combination of vasodilatation (enlargement of blood vessels) and the release of chemicals from nerve fibers that coil around the blood vessels. During a migraine attack, the temporal artery enlarges. (The temporal artery is an artery that lies on the outside of the skull just under the skin of the temple.) Enlargement of the temporal artery stretches the nerves that coil around the artery and causes the nerves to release chemicals. The chemicals cause inflammation, pain, and further enlargement of the artery. The increasing enlargement of the artery magnifies the pain.

MIGRAINE
For centuries, physicians and migraineurs have been fascinated by the many manifestations of migraine, and especially by the visual hallucinations or auras- similar in some ways to those induced by hallucinogenic drugs or deliriawhich often precede a migraine. In this revised edition of his first book, Dr. Sacks describes these hallucinatory constants and what they reveal about the working of the brain, drawing on recent advances in chaos theory and neural simulation. Migraine, he writes, can give us a most direct and privileged view not only of the secrets of neuronal organization, but also of the self-organizing systems of naturerecently described by chaos theoristswhich often remain hidden in our daily lives.
Beyond this, Dr. Sacks finds a fascination in the multiple forms of migraine and the many triggers which may set them offand of the crucial importance of considering the role played by migraine in each individual's life.

What is a migraine?
Migraine is characterised by its one-sided nature. A migraine is a throbbing, intense headache in one half of the head. It can affect people of all ages. The cause of migraine is not known.
During an attack, the blood vessels in the brain dilate and then draw together with stimulation of nerve endings near the affected blood vessels. These changes to the blood vessels are probably what cause the pain, but migraine is still a condition that is poorly understood.
Are migraines hereditary?
There is often a predisposition for migraine within the family of migraine sufferers, but it is not certain how large a role heredity plays. Migraine is a fairly common condition, affecting about 20 per cent of females and 6 per cent of males in their lifetime. Although it can come on later in life this is unusual. About 90 per cent of migraine sufferers have their first attack before they are 40.

This is a book Migraineurs have been waiting for. This is a book we want our families, doctors, friends everyone with whom we come in contact to read. The comment most frequently made when Migraineurs get together to talk is that we wish people who think Migraines are just a bad headache would have a Migraine so they'd know how mistaken they are. We wish just one migraine on every doctor who will ever treat a Migraine patient. This book is the next best thing. It is a compilation of descriptive quotes from Migraineurs frustrated, desperate, humorous, frightened, hopeful Migraineurs. Ms. Hatak approaches the topic of migraines with dedication, compassion and humor. She recognizes that Migraine has profound effects on the families and friends of Migraineurs as well.
