FRANCHESCA
Last modified May 28, 2001
Franchesca was born on August 2, 1986, with anophthalmia, a condition in which the child has no eyes. An MRI when she was six indicated that she may have some optic nerve development. The above picture was taken when she was 9 years old. She is now 14 years old and still very tiny for her age. Franchesca has had numerous surgeries in the attempt to provide her with prosthetic eyes. These surgeries were done incorrectly, and during some of them she was not anesthetized. She was given Phenobarbital daily for 18 months as a sedative to keep her from doing things which would interfere with the healing process. Franchesca is classified educationally as mentally retarded and speech handicapped, in addition to being totally blind. It is not known how much her speech difficulties and blindness interfere with her ability to display her intellectual abilities. She has a large vocabulary and is quite expressive; however, her words are difficult to understand much of the time. I met Franchesca when she was two and a half years old. I was one of several teenagers providing child care at a local support meeting for parents. Franchesca and her two older sisters were among the children for whom we were caring. Franchesca was very active but still unable to walk. Shortly after I met her, she began wearing AFO's, a special kind of brace designed to correct the turning inward of her feet. When I met Franchesca, she could not talk or perform any self-care skills.

I decided to build a site for Microphthalmia and Anophthalmia when our youngest son, Jacob was diagnosed with Microphthalmia with cyst, and Coloboma of the right eye when he was 3 weeks old. Jacob at 8 months old: 1 month after getting his first artificial eye. Jacob at 7 1/2 years old: Searching for information on Jakes condition was extremely frustrating and disappointing. There didn't seem to be much out there to help satisfy my urgency to know more about what our son was born with, not to mention what we can do to help him. It wasn't until I started corresponding with other families around the world, that I felt less alone. Being able to talk with others who know what you are going through and what your about to go through makes all the difference in the world!

I n secondary anophthalmia the eye starts to develop and for some reason stops, leaving the infant with only residual eye tissue or extremely tiny eyes which can only be seen under close examination. I n degenerative anophthalmia the eye started to form and, for some reason, degenerated. One reason for this occurring could be a lack of blood supply to the eye. T reatment T here is no cure for this condition. Sometimes the child may have other conditions or complications that may require monitoring. Prosthetic eyes can be fitted to the empty eye sockets which can sometimes involve surgery for reasons such as putting implants into the socket to make it easier to fit the prostheses. Prostheses are not just for cosmetic purposes but also help to promote the growth of the eye socket. Conformers, which are a bit like balloons that can be expanded inside the socket, are sometimes used to further encourage the growth of the socket. M icrophthalmia

related terms: ocular dysgenesis syndrome (microphthalmia with multiple anomalies), ocular dysgenesis associated with albinism and deafness, coloboma What is microphthalmia? Affected dogs have prominent third eyelids and small eyes which appear recessed in the eye socket (enophthalmos). A defect early in development results in the smaller than normal eye (microphthalmia). This is often associated with other eye abnormalities, including defects of the cornea, anterior chamber, lens and/or retina. Microphthalmia is also seen with coloboma - a cleft in a portion of the eye, particularly the iris. Microphthalmia with multiple defects (ocular dysgenesis) is often seen in dogs with a merle hair coat with excessive amounts of white. The eyes are commonly different colours. Partial deafness may also be part of this syndrome. These dogs are frequently blind. Cataracts (opacity of the lens) often occur with microphthalmia, causing some degree of visual impairment. How is microphthalmia inherited?
