Pleural Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer caused by asbestos exposure. In mesothelioma patients, cancer cells grow without control or order and spread along the surface of internal organs. The most frequently targeted areas are: the pleura or membranes surrounding the lungs and chest, the lining of the peritoneum or abdominal cavity, and the membranes surrounding the pericardium or heart. When the pleura is infected by cancer cells, it is called pleural mesothelioma. This is the most common type of mesothelioma. This disease causes severe respiratory problems and is almost always fatal. However, various treatments for pleural mesothelioma may improve longevity and the quality of life.
Diagnosis
An asbestos victim generally does not develop pleural mesothelioma until decades after the first asbestos exposure. The initial symptoms are difficulty in breathing and chest pain. Other signs of pleural mesothelioma include hoarseness, difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), and coughing up blood (hemoptysis). Over half of the patients with pleural mesothelioma have pain in the lower back or at the side of the chest.

Bain, DVM, PhD Class of 2003 (Kavula), Department of Pathology (Latimer, Bain), College of Veterinary Medicine, The University of Georgia, Athens, GA 30602-7388 Introduction Mesotheliomas are rare neoplasms that originate from ectodermal cells that line the body cavities. Healthy mesothelium is composed of a flattened monolayer of mesothelial cells that line the pleural, pericardial, and peritoneal cavities. These cells also cover the tunica albuginea of the testes. Mesothelial cells are characterized by the presence of microvilli and desmosomes. They also have the potential to phagocytose cells and particulate matter. When mesothelial cells are perturbed following inflammation or irritation, they may increase in size (hypertrophy) and number (hyperplasia). Following fluid accumulation within the body cavities, mesothelial cells may exfoliate and implant on serosal surfaces. Mesotheliomas are malignant neoplasms. Their exfoliated cells also can seed the body cavities. Although multiple tumors often are present, distant metastases are rare. Non-neoplastic mesothelial cells affected by inflammation, irritation, or malignancy may have a similar cytologic appearance to mesothelioma cells. Thus, cytologic distinction of neoplastic and reactive mesothelial cells can be challenging to impossible.

Mesothelioma Help
"The launch of Meso is a significant event for Meso Diagnostics and greatly enhances our product portfolio, underscoring our commitment to commercialize high quality diagnostic tools that improve cancer patient care," said Dr. Jeffrey Ard, vice-president and chief scientific officer at Fsa. "Meso is the first in-vitro diagnostic test for patients with mesothelioma and has the potential to improve survival rates and quality of life for patients with this aggressive and often fatal disease."
Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer in which fluid accumulates between the lining of the lungs and chest cavity. It is primarily caused by work-related asbestos exposure and has a latency period of up to 75 years. It is estimated that 10,000 new cases are diagnosed each year among industrialized countries.
Meso is a manual enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for managing mesothelioma. It works by identifying a group of molecular markers called soluble mesothelin-related proteins (SMRP), which are released into the blood-stream by mesothelioma cells.
Because SMRPs can be elevated for several years before an actual diagnosis of mesothelioma can be made, Meso will help in the routine monitoring of asbestos exposed individuals who are at greatest risk for developing mesothelioma.

How do you get Mesothelioma? How much exposure does it take to get the disease? How long does it take after exposure for the disease to show up? Mesothelioma : Tumor of body cavity lining. A cancer of the chest lining. The National Cancer Institute states that: " Malignant mesothelioma , a rare form of cancer, is a disease in which cancer (malignant) cells are found in the sac lining the chest (the pleura), the lining of the abdominal cavity (the peritoneum) or the lining around the heart (the pericardium)." Mesothelioma Mesothelioma Treatment Mesothelioma Pathophysiology Mesothelium definition ... Mesothelioma is an uncommon form of cancer, usually associated with previous exposure to asbestos. Asbestos is the fibrous form of several minerals and hydrous silicates of magnesium. The name may also be applied to the fibrous forms of calcium and iron. Asbestos fibers can be molded or woven into various fabrics. Because it is nonflammable and a poor heat conductor, asbestos has been widely used to make fireproof products such as safety clothing for fire fighters and insulation products such as hot-water piping. Mesothelioma affects the pleura, a sac which surrounds the lungs, the peritoneum, the lining of the abdominal cavity, or the pericardium, a sac that surrounds the heart.

Earlier Study On Mesothelioma Contraction Rates Proves Erroneous
A recent report indicates that earlier predictions about the timeline for a peak of Mesothelioma contractions and fatalities was erroneous. The report indicates that the number of deaths each year due to mesothelioma, set at 1,848 in 2001 will increase until it reaches its peak between the years of 2011 and 2015. The peak is expected to see between 1,950 and 2,450 deaths per year. After this point, however, the number of deaths due to mesothelioma is expected to fall dramatically. This dramatic reduction in the number of deaths is due to the fact that in 1980 there was a sharp reduction in the use of asbestos as an insulating material. Because the disease takes years to develop, there may be some residual cases of contraction, but it appears from this report that those cases will be few and far between. Medindia.com reports: The abrupt reduction in asbestos exposure in 1980 has altered the lifelong patterns of exposure that people have experienced. This makes the previosu age-related models inaccurate. Our new bodel for predicting mesothelioma morality rates is more complex and takes acount of the varying exposure to asbestos of different age groups at different times of their lives. Mesothelioma
What is Mesothelioma ?
Mesothelioma - also known as 'diffuse' or 'malignant' mesothelioma - is a relatively rare form of cancer which affects the membranous lining of the chest (the pleura) and less commonly, the lining of the abdomen (the peritoneum) and of the heart (the pericardium). The disease can take 10-50 years (or even longer) to develop and is usually associated with asbestos exposure. A small number of people develop mesothelioma without known exposure; this may be because it can be difficult to trace the exposure because of the huge time lapse before the disease develops. The period of exposure to asbestos may have been quite short but usually heavy and all forms, blue, brown and white, can cause mesothelioma.
How is it diagnosed ?
Early diagnosis is difficult and, in most cases, the first obvious sign of something being wrong is when an 'effusion' occurs. This is an accumulation of fluid which gathers in the pleural space around the lung (or peritoneal space in the abdomen). This often causes breathlessness and the doctor can draw or drain the fluid off to relieve this symptom. On chest x-rays the signs are often not very definite and may possibly only show a slight thickening of the pleura. It may be necessary for several tests and biopsies to confirm the diagnosis - and this may take a few weeks.
