What is mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer (malignancy) that most frequently arises from the cells lining the sacs of the chest (the pleura) or the abdomen (the peritoneum). How do you get mesothelioma?
Most people with malignant mesothelioma have worked on jobs where they breathed asbestos. Others have been exposed to asbestos in a household environment, often without knowing it. How much exposure does it take to get mesothelioma?
An exposure of as little as one or two months can result in mesothelioma 30 or 40 years later. How long does it take after exposure for mesothelioma to show up?
People exposed in the 1940s, 50s, 60s, and 70s are now being diagnosed with mesothelioma because of the long latency period of asbestos disease. How is mesothelioma diagnosed?

Mesothelioma Cancer - Treatments and Information
Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is an uncommon form of cancer and can be treated. It is usually associated with previous exposure to asbestos. In this cancerous disease, malignant cells develop in the Mesothelium, a protective lining that covers most of the body's internal organs. Mesothelioma cancer is most commonly found in the pleura (the outer lining of the lungs and chest cavity), but it may also occur in the peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal cavity) or the pericardium (a sac that surrounds the heart). Often referred to as Peritoneum Mesothelioma. A life-threatening disease Mesothelioma cannot be left untreated. The sooner it is diagnosed the better a patient's chances are of fighting this deadly cancer. Please contact a qualified physician immediately if you or someone you know has been diagnosed with Mesothelioma. Mesothelioma Treatments Surgery Surgery may be necessary to remove portions of the pleural or peritoneal lining and surrounding tissue, depending on the progression of the Mesothelioma cancer. In more serious cases, surgeons may remove a patient's lung, or sections of the diaphragm/pericardium.

Soft Tissue Injuries ClassAction/Recalls: Mesothelioma The National Cancer Institute defines malignant mesothelioma as "as a rare form of cancer in which cancer cells are found in the sac lining the chest, the lining of the abdominal cavity or the lining around the heart." The medical names for these areas are the pleura, the peritoneum and the pericardium respectively and the lining around these organs is called the "mesothelium".
The National Institute of Cancer cites working with asbestos as the major risk factor for mesothelioma. While almost 80 percent of those that have mesothelioma have been exposed to asbestos, there are still reported cases where there is no known asbestos exposure. Smoking alone has not been shown to increase the risk of mesothelioma but smoking in conjunction with exposure to asbestos does increase risk. The heavier the exposure to asbestos, the greater the chance of mesothelioma, although not everyone exposed is afflicted with the cancer.
Although millions of Americans have been exposed to some amount of asbestos since the 1940's, there are particular fields where there is an increased risk of exposure. These fields are primarily areas where asbestos was used heavily in production. Particular workers affected include; asbestos miners, shipyard workers, workers in the heating and constructions fields and the producers of other asbestos related products.

About Mesothelioma
Types of Mesothelioma
There are two types of mesothelioma: pleural mesothelioma and peritoneal mesothelioma. Pleural mesothelioma is a cancer that affects the pleura, or the lining around the outside of the lungs and the inside of the ribs. Pleural mesothelioma is believed to be caused by inhalation of asbestos or asbestos containing materials. The vast majority of mesothelioma cases (about 80%) are pleural in nature. Pleural mesothelioma can be either benign, which is localized and non-cancerous, or malignant, which is diffuse and cancerous. Peritoneal mesothelioma is a cancer of the membrane surrounding the abdomen. This type of cancer can also be benign or malignant. It is believed that peritoneal mesothelioma is a result of ingesting asbestos fibers in the mucus, the protective layer of saliva that works to expel foreign agents from the body. Peritoneal mesothelioma is extremely rare, occurring in only one-fifth of diagnosed cases. Symptoms of Mesothelioma
Common symptoms of mesothelioma include shortness of breath, especially during exertion; a frequent cough; coughing up blood; tightness in the chest; wheezing; and general chest pain. Excessive sweating and weight loss are also signs of mesothelioma.

We will represent asbestos victims throughout the United States. We can help you, too, wherever you live. We encourage you to learn more about our asbestos lawyers From the turn of the century through the 1970s, asbestos was widely used in the United States as an insulation and fireproofing material. Each year, workers applied hundreds of thousands of tons of asbestos in a variety of jobs. Those who worked with and around these workers were also exposed to asbestos dust. Most workers did not wear respirators or other protective equipment because they were not warned that asbestos was deadly. As a result, there has been a steady increase in asbestos-related disease among workers in trades such as:

What is Mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer where cancerous cells are found in the mesothelium. Mesothelium is a membrane that covers and protects most of the internal organs of the body. It is composed of two layers of cells. The first layer surrounds the organ. The second layer forms a sac around the organ. The mesothelium produces a lubricating fluid that is released between these layers, allowing moving organs to glide easily against adjacent structures. Mesothelioma is typically associated with exposure to asbestos which has been documented in about 75% of all mesothelioma cases. Most cases of mesothelioma occur 30-45 years after initial exposure to asbestos. Mesothelioma can spread and cause damage to other organs. What Causes Mesothelioma? Mesothelioma is most often caused by exposure to asbestos. Asbestos is a mineral fiber that can pollute air and water. Asbestos can cause mesothelioma, lung cancer or asbestosis when inhaled.

The dense white encircling tumor mass is arising from the visceral pleura and is a mesothelioma. These are big bulky tumors that can fill the chest cavity. The risk factor for mesothelioma is asbestos exposure. However, mesothelioma is rare even in persons with asbestos exposure. Asbestosis more commonly predisposes to bronchogenic carcinomas, increasing the risk by a factor of five. Smoking increases the risk for lung cancer by a factor of ten. Thus, smokers with a history of asbestos exposure have a risk 50 fold greater likelihood of for developing lung cancer.
