The other 25% live in their own apartments or houses with assistance provided on an individualized, as-needed basis by ENCORE. Statistics over fifteen years of service tell a story of growth and success. Since its inception in 1986, CORE has doubled the number of full-time residents it serves and has doubled its workforce. The supported living services of CORE, called ENCORE (Extended Networks of CORE) were established in 1991. While CORE's primary activity is and always will be the provision of optimum services to those who entrust us with their dreams, a commitment to society and the community, at large, inspires us to create new commitment that we perpetuate CORE's mission.

The Arc's Home Page For additional information on sibling support visit the Sibling Support Project Home Page. Is having a sibling with a disability different than having a sibling who does not have a disability? Yes and no. The relationship between siblings can be a very important part of any person's life. Siblings often share the same family experiences and form a special relationship which can last throughout their lives. Children who grow up together in the same family can form a unique bond, regardless of a brother or sister having a disability. In fact, the relationship between siblings and their brother or sister with a disability can be identical to the relationship between any brother or sister. They may be close and remain so into adulthood, or they may never develop a close relationship or grow apart as they get older. Family situations and circumstances, such as divorce or even cultural differences, can also affect the way a sibling relationship develops. It's important to remember that a lot of factors affect how siblings relate to each other, and not just the fact that one of them has a disability. However, sometimes having a brother or sister with a disability in the family creates challenges that other families may not experience. Some of these challenges can directly affect the siblings.

Exceptional Children
HYG-5265-96
Pat Shenberger An exceptional child is one that is different in some way from the "normal" or "average" child. The term "exceptional child" includes those with special problems related to physical disabilities, sensory impairments, emotional disturbances, learning disabilities, and mental retardation. Most exceptional children require a lot of understanding and patience as well as special education and related services if they are to reach their full potential of development. It is estimated that one out of every ten children in the United States is an exceptional child, representing a total of nearly eight million children. However, it is difficult to determine the number of exceptional children in a given category for many reasons. The definitions of handicapping conditions are often ambiguous. Diagnosis of a condition may overlap with another condition or the diagnoses may change over time. Many exceptional children remain undetected and often parents resist having their children identified as exceptional because of the stigma attached with labeling. Families with children who have special needs are just like other families in many ways. These "ordinary" families can take many forms: traditional; single-parent; multi-cultural; and blended. They are also of various socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds.
