Florida's Voice on Mental Retardation, Inc. (FVMR), incorporated in Florida in March 1995, is a statewide all volunteer, non-profit organization comprised of family and friends of persons with mental retardation and related developmental disabilities. FVMR advocates for a full continuum of educational, medical, programmatic, recreational, residential, therapeutic, and vocational options based upon individual needs and choices.
October Conference Information
Membership or Donation Form, click here! Resources FVMR offers family members and friends support services and research materials, while also advocating on behalf of persons with mental retardation, particularly those whose conditions are so severe that they cannot speak for themselves. FVMR members recognize that the vast majority of persons with mental retardation are mildly retarded and, therefore, are frequently employable and educable. However, those who are severely and profoundly retarded typically require much more intensive, and therefore, costlier services. Recognizing that the more extensive the services, the more cost involved, FVMR members advocate a full array of services in the most cost effective manner possible - community programs, family home care, group homes, and larger centers (over 6 beds) for only the most severely mentally retarded and developmentally disabled.

There's a kid at school who seems different. You've heard people say he has mental retardation (say: ree-tar- day -shun), but what does that mean? What Is Mental Retardation?
To understand mental retardation, it helps to know what intelligence (say: in- teh -luh-junts) is. Intelligence is a way of describing someone's ability to think, learn, and solve problems. Mental retardation means that someone has lower than average intelligence. The person may have trouble learning. It may take longer for the person to learn social skills, such as how to be friends or how to communicate with other people. The person also may be less able to care for himself or herself and to live on his or her own as an adult. Sometimes kids who have mental retardation get teased or bullied . This is especially sad because these kids really need friends and people who will be kind to them. Just because they have learning problems doesn't mean they don't have feelings! Just like you, these kids want to be liked and to have fun at school. During school, a kid with mental retardation will probably need help. Some kids have aides that stay with them during the school day. Special education and other services are available to help with learning and behavior.

NCBDDD Home Mental Retardation What Is Mental Retardation? How Common Is It? ... Click here to contact the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities. What is mental retardation? Mental retardation is characterized both by a significantly below-average score on a test of mental ability or intelligence and by limitations in the ability to function in areas of daily life, such as communication, self-care, and getting along in social situations and school activities. Mental retardation is sometimes referred to as a cognitive or intellectual disability. Children with mental retardation can and do learn new skills, but they develop more slowly than children with average intelligence and adaptive skills. There are different degrees of mental retardation, ranging from mild to profound. A person's level of mental retardation can be defined by their intelligence quotient (IQ), or by the types and amount of support they need. People with mental retardation may have other disabilities as well. Examples of these coexisting conditions include cerebral palsy, seizure disorders, vision impairment, hearing loss, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Children with severe mental retardation are more likely to have additional disabilities than are children with mild mental retardation. [
