Women Who are Overweight and Underweight have Problems with Fertility
Akashia Anderson
Infertility is a consequence of eating disorders that is not addressed as often as other consequences. What effect does eating disorders have infertility? Eating disorders can have people overweight, underweight and sometimes a normal weight. Body size has been related to several gynecological disorders. Higher risks of infertility have been found in both overweight and underweight women. To what extent being excessively under or overweight increases a womanÂ’s risk for infertility is unknown. Women who are excessively underweight or overweight may be at increased risk of amenorrhea. Women need to have a certain amount of body fat in order to menstruate and conceive children. Many anorexic girls and women either never get their period or their period stops due to extreme weight loss. The cessation of menstruation, (amenorrhea), can be permanent depending on how long a woman has been suffering from anorexia. But for most women menstruation will start up when they begin to gain weight. Roughly 80% of anorexic women who successfully treat their eating disorder will regain their ability to conceive. When a woman's percentage of body fat falls below a certain minimum her body doesn't produce the levels of hormones necessary to stimulate ovulation. Rapid weight loss and undernourishment leads a woman's body into a state of emergency and she will not menstruate if she is just barely surviving. Low weight and weight loss is also associated with ovulatory dysfunction and thus infertility. Even a moderate weight loss of 10-15% under ideal body weight can result in menstrual irregularity. It does not need to be the weight alteration of 30% or more as seen in women with anorexia nervosa or bulimia. Weight gain programs in these underweight women have been shown to restore ovulation and pregnancy in up to 73% of women who were able to achieve 95% of their ideal body weight. For many studies affecting eating disorders, a BMI (body mass index) of 17.5 - 20 is underweight and under 17.5 is considered very underweight (Reid and Van Vugt 1987).

Try these tips to help ease PMS and menstrual disturbances:
  • Consume greater amounts of fresh fruit and veg. Eat fruit and veg which contain high levels of antioxidants. Increase the amounts of fish and poultry you eat in comparison to red meat. Avoid alcohol. Avoid processed foods. Graze: eat 5 or 6 small meals per day. Increase soy in your diet e.g. tofu, soy milk, or take soy capsules. Soy helps to balance hormones.

    Why is the study important?
What types of questions about menstruation did the researchers ask women in this study?

Women in the study were asked several questions about their most recent menstrual periods, including the number of days of menstrual bleeding they had during their periods, the number of days from the beginning of one menstrual period to the beginning of the next, how regular their periods were, the amount of bleeding they experienced during their periods (such as whether their periods were heavy or light), the extent to which they had pain during menstruation, and whether they had bleeding or spotting between periods. Did the study only include women who had undergone tubal sterilization?

    http://users.mrbean.net.au/~wlast/menstrual.html
MENSTRUAL PROBLEMS by Walter Last I regard menstrual bleeding as a sign of subnormal health even if it is in the accepted normal range and I also see heavier bleeding much earlier as a symptom of a health problem than present medical opinion. This assessment is based on my own experience as well as the supporting evidence found in several books. It appears that undomesticated animals living in their natural habitats do not show any periodic bleeding. The situation is less clear with the anthropoid apes, but I understand that there may be no bleeding on vegetarian diets in the wild and only minimal bleeding in captivity. The periodic shedding of the endometrium in humans is given as reason for the commonly observed menstrual bleeding. However, I see no reason why this cannot just be reabsorbed and used as a valuable resource by the body. This seems to happen with women of various 'primitive' tribes as reported in the literature and also with many women on low protein diets in western societies. At most, a bit of 'spotting' is all that should be visible. I know personally several women who stopped external bleeding when they adopted a vegetarian low-protein diet predominantly based on raw food. In these cases the normal ovulation cycle continued as shown by temperature measurements, checks of mucus consistency and a pregnancy. These women were fit and in good health. One was sent by a concerned specialist for bone density measurement. The result showed above normal bone density.

My understanding that there is no direct connection between the two.

KaTy nutmeg 01-13-2004, 09:06 PM If you do a Google search on scoliosis and menstrual, you will find a lot of sites which state that scoliosis causes menstrual problems, but none of those I looked at provided any evidence to support this. I don't know of any research into the subject.
I'm sure it is true that a lot of women with scoliosis have menstrual problems, but is also true that a lot of women WITHOUT scoliosis have menstrual problems From personal experience ( I have scoliosis) I had irregular periods and significant pain from the ages of 12 to 18. When I went to university and lived in a women's college my periods became regular, and mostly pain-free. When I finished college the problems returned. A year later I started taking the combined contraceptive pill, and I have been pain-free ever since. This strongly suggests my problems were caused by hormonal imbalances not by the scoliosis. (Research has shown that when women spend a lot of time together, as at college, they react to each others hormones, and their menstrual cycles can become synchronised).

Male Hormones May Cause Menstrual Problems in Diabetic Women by Jennifer Wider, M.D.
    Society for Women's Health Research
August 21, 2003 Diabetic women often experience menstrual disturbances and a new study suggests that increased levels of male hormones may play a role. Low levels of androgens or male hormones are normal in women and are produced by the ovary, adrenal gland and other tissues. In excess, androgens can cause acne, hirsutism or excessive hair, male-pattern balding, voice changes and menstrual irregularities. Researchers from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pennsylvania presented their findings at the 63rd Scientific Session of the American Diabetes Association in New Orleans, Louisiana. They examined the results of questionnaires given to women with both type one and type two diabetes. The researchers found a higher occurrence of acne in women with type one diabetes, more menstrual irregularities, unwanted hair growth and an earlier age at menopause in women with type two diabetes. The study also revealed reproductive abnormalities including a lower number of live births in both type one and type two diabetic women. According to Mary Korytkowski, M.D., lead researcher of the study from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, the relationship between excess androgen levels and diabetes in women is not fully understood: "It could be that high insulin levels prime the ovary or adrenal to make excess androgen in these women, but this is theoretical at this time."
