Menstrual problems are common for women with HIV. These problems may include lighter or heavier bleeding, missed periods, or more severe PMS. They can be caused by a number of things, like low CD4 cells or high viral load. The change in your immune system could affect your hormones and cause problems with your period. Weight loss, chronic disease, drug abuse, birth control, HIV drugs, uterine fibroids, itching, genital tract infections, or perimenopause could also cause menstrual problems. If you're having any of these problems, talk to your doctor to find out what's causing them. E-mail this page to a friend Last Updated: April 2005 See the resources below to learn more about this OI:

Vitex agnus-castus is also known as Chasteberry and agnus castus. It helps with female hormonal imbalances. In women it is used in the treatment of PMS irritability, breast pain and water retention. Often used with sage for hot flushes. When coming off the pill it has been known to help restore a regular menstrual cycle, or when the cycle has been disrupted. Hormonally, it acts on the pituitary gland in the brain stimulating the release of lutenizing hormone, which stimulates the production of progesterone. Hence its somewhat dampening effect on men! It is still used in some monasteries to help the monks keep to their vows of chastity. The best time to take this herb is in the morning, before breakfast. Lemon Balm is often used for menstrual problems as it has a calming and regulating effect in the menstrual cycle. It helps ease menstrual cramps and alleviates scanty menstruation and abnormal absence of menstruation.

Herbal Support for Chronic Menstrual Problems
Botanical Results Herbal Support for Chronic Menstrual Problems - is a botanical alternative medicine formulation which contains a blend of 12 all-natural herbal extracts for effective support in battling menstrual problems. Menstruation is a normal part of a woman's reproductive cycle. For most women, the menstrual cycle is about 28 days, but it can vary considerably even from one month to another. Hormones in the blood stimulate the ovaries to produce ova, which brings on the cycle. The degree of discomfort or pain a period causes varies widely among individuals. Although premenstrual symptoms and discomfort during menstruation were once thought to be of psychological origin, it is now known that hormonal and chemical changes are responsible. The three main categories of menstrual irregularities are amenorrhea ( lack of period ), dysmenorrhea ( painful periods ) and menorrhagia ( heavy periods Botanical Results contains well-known herbs which help to regulate the menstrual cycle and alleviate many period-related problems.

Why synchronised swimmers are protected from menstrual problems
The physiological and aesthetic demands of synchronised swimming are similar to those of gymnastics and dancing. But do synchronised swimmers suffer menstrual disturbance to the same extent as female gymnasts and dancers - or do they have more in common with conventional swimmers, who are relatively protected from the 'female athletic triad' of disordered eating, amenorrhoea (absent periods) and osteoporosis?
These are the questions a pair of researchers from the British Olympic Medical Centre set out to answer with a study of the Great Britain synchronised swimming squads. Seven members of the senior squad and 16 of the junior squad filled in a questionnaire designed to assess the normality of their menstrual cycles and also underwent a range of physiological tests.
Analysis revealed that only three of the subjects were oligomenorrhoeic (with menstrual cycles longer than 35 days) and none were amenorrhoeic. The mean age of menarche (onset of menstruation) was 13.7 years. Mean estimated body fat percentage was 23% and mean VO2max was 47.2ml/kg/min.

Treating Teen Menstrual Problems with the Pill
    by Marjorie Greenfield, M.D.

reviewed and revised by Marjorie Greenfield, M.D.
There are several reasons why birth control pills may be prescribed to a teenager aside from simply preventing pregnancy, and many young women who are not sexually active can benefit from taking oral contraceptives. Menstrual periods on the Pill tend to be extremely regularto the point where a girl can expect that her period will arrive every four weeks on a Tuesday afternoon. After a few months of taking birth control pills, the uterine lining also becomes thinner, leading to several changes, including milder menstrual cramps and lighter bleeding.
I often tell parents that I wish there were a brand of birth control pill that was packaged as "cycle control pills," so we could avoid the implications of prescribing birth control and still offer the benefits that the Pill provides. The idea of having your young teenager on birth control pills may be distressing, but the Pill's great benefits often persuade many families to ultimately choose this route for treatment of their daughters' problems.
