http://www.skinsite.com/info_melanoma.htm
Melanoma
Melanoma or "black mole cancer" is the name given to the most dangerous form of skin cancer. The reason melanoma is so dangerous is that once it grows to a certain thickness, it metastasizes or spreads throughout the body. After melanoma has spread to the internal organs there is little that can be done and death follows shortly after. This type of cancer tends to occur in men and women in the prime of their lives. Melanoma is seen mainly not in outdoor workers, but in indoor professionals. This is considered to be due to the fact that indoor workers get bursts of sunlight on weekends and holidays. It is thought that these short bursts of sunlight are responsible for the development of this cancer. People who are light in skin tone, fair hair, and who have a family member who has had a melanoma need to be particularly careful and should have a complete skin exam each year. A history of melanoma in the family leads to a greater chance of developing a melanoma. The person at greatest risk is the light-skinned, indoor worker who gets bursts of sunlight during weekends or holidays. A person can avoid getting melanoma by avoiding sunlight and wearing a sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher while in the sun. People who work indoors should be especially careful. If you work indoors and only get bursts of sunlight on vacations and weekends, it is very important to wear sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher. Melanomas are usually treated by

Physicians at Mayo Clinic treat several hundred melanoma cases each year. Specialists from Dermatology, Oncology, Ophthalmology, General Surgery, Otorhinolaryngology and other specialty areas work together to offer the latest treatment for melanoma skin cancer. Consultations are available for individuals suspected of having genetic susceptibility to melanoma . Clinical and laboratory investigators at Mayo participate in melanoma research projects designed to improve treatment.
Diagnosis
Physicians evaluate new skin growths, atypical lesions that last for more than two weeks, or changing moles. To diagnose melanoma, a sample (biopsy) of the questionable spot on the skin is taken for laboratory analysis by a pathologist. If a cancer invades deeply into the skin a sentinel lymph node biopsy may be done. This procedure identifies the lymph node that would first receive drainage from a malignant tumor. If no cancer cells are found in the sentinel lymph node, then the chance of cancer having spread to other parts of the body is very low. An X-ray and blood tests may also be conducted to determine if the cancer has spread to other areas.

Skin Cancer Information
You can support Cancer Research! Find out more. Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer. It begins from a skin cell called a melanocyte. Melanocytes are normally located throughout the skin and produce melan pigment. Melan pigment is produced by these cells when exposed to sunlight as part of the tanning process. Regular moles contain groups of melanocytes. Melanoma begins when an individual melanocyte loses its ability to regulate its own growth, like a copy machine with a broken counting mechanism that continues to make copies even when you keep pushing the stop button. With time the melanoma grows. The earlier you find it and the thinner it is, the better the chance of complete cure. How common is melanoma?

Lesion removed from McCain's nose malignant
Doctors said John McCain's lesion was "the earliest form of melanoma." PHOENIX, Arizona (CNN) The lesion removed from Sen. John McCain's nose was malignant, the Arizona Republican's press secretary said Tuesday. After the surgery late Monday afternoon, McCain had said it was a "non-malignant melanoma." The press secretary, Nancy Ives, said he "misspoke." According to the American Academy of Dermatology, there is no such thing as "nonmalignant melanoma" melanoma by definition is malignant. However, McCain's doctors at the Mayo Clinic Hospital in North Phoenix said the lesion was "in situ," meaning it hadn't spread beyond the original site where it was found. They called it "the earliest form of melanoma." When melanoma is caught at its earliest stage, it has a 96 percent cure rate, according to the American Cancer Society.

Conquering Melanoma: Prevent It, Spot It, Treat It
What Is Melanoma?
The most dangerous form of skin cancer, melanoma begins in a type of skin cell called a melanocyte. Melanocytes produce the skin pigment known as melanin, which is responsible for our natural skin color. When exposed to sunlight, these skin cells produce large amounts of melanin as part of the tanning process, helping to protect the skin from burning. Pigmented markings of the skin are known as moles, which are groups of melanocytes in the skin. while moles are generally harmless, they can become cancerous.
A Problem on the Rise
Although melanoma accounts for only about 5 percent of all skin cancer cases, it causes 77 percent of all skin cancer-related deaths (Source: American Cancer Society). It accounts for 5 percent of all cancers in men and 4 percent of all cancers in women. The lifetime risk of developing melanoma has risen and continues to rise.
