It involves the cells that produce pigment (melanin), which is responsible for skin and hair color. Melanoma can also involve the pigmented portion of the eye. (See also skin cancer and melanoma of the eye Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top There are 4 major types of melanoma:
  • Superficial spreading melanoma is the most common type of melanoma. It is usually flat and irregular in shape and color, with varying shades of black and brown. It may occur at any age or site and is most common in Caucasians. Nodular melanoma usually starts as a raised area that is dark blackish-blue or bluish-red, although some lack color.

27. Hellenic Melanoma Site
Providing knowledge about the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of melanoma as well as explorating the profile of melanoma in Greece in comparison with melanoma worldwide.
http://www.mednet.gr/hms/index.htm
Welcome to the Hellenic Melanoma Site. This is a cooperative gateway to the scientific world of melanoma. You are invited to join us to a space where everyone can contribute, where everyone together can build a clearinghouse for educational information and research activity concerning melanoma in Greece. The primary purpose of the HMS is to provide knowledge about the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of melanoma. The final goal is to explore the profile of melanoma in Greece in comparison with melanoma worldwide. Since 1986, the Department of Plastic Surgery and Microsurgery and the Department of Pathology in the General Hospital of Athens "G. Gennimatas", have founded a collaborating group for the prevention, early diagnosis and surgical treatment of melanoma.
This collaboration led, in 1989, to the establishment of an outpatient clinic for Pigmented Skin Lesions (PSL). A mean number of 40 patients are clinically examined weekly. Biopsies and histological examinations are performed, when needed.
The progressively increasing number of patients gave us the possibility to expand our activities in the field of research and to develop a database for a close follow up of the patients.

About Melanoma
Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer. Even so, if diagnosed and removed while it is still thin and limited to the outermost skin layer, it is almost 100% curable. Once the cancer advances and metastasizes (spreads) to other parts of the body, it is hard to treat and can be deadly. During the past 10 years the number of cases of melanoma has increased more rapidly than that of any other cancer. Over 51,000 new cases are reported to the American Cancer Society each year, and it is probable that a great many more occur and are not reported.

I still have links to the photo albums of other tour participants. My name is Kevin Madzia. During the summer of 2004, I undertook an incredible adventure: to travel from the west coast to the east coast of North America by bicycle. The purpose of this event was to raise awareness of melanoma, and to raise money for melanoma research. This ride was dedicated to the memory of my father, George Madzia, who died of melanoma in November of 2002. Nearly a million new cases of skin cancer are reported every year. Of that number, about 42,000 Americans develop melanoma a skin cancer that generally begins with a change in the shape, color, or some other feature of a pigmented area of the skin. Melanoma is the most serious and potentially lethal of all skin cancers. Each year more than 7,500 patients die of the disease. The incidence of melanoma is rising more rapidly than the incidence of other solid tumors. Melanoma is the leading cause of cancer death in women ages 25 through 30. Because men and women with melanoma may be relatively young at onset (less than 48 years old), melanoma is one of the most significant causes of lost productivity in the U.S. population. The number of fatal melanomas continues to rise especially among older men. Education efforts have increased public awareness of melanoma and of the importance of skin-cancer screening. Earlier diagnosis and surgical treatment have improved the cure rate. Now more than 85 percent of patients with new cases of melanoma can expect to be cured by appropriate surgery. Nonsurgical treatment includes adjuvant therapies therapies used in combination that help prevent recurrence. UPMC Health System Home Page About UPMC Health Med Info Find a Doctor ... UPMC Hospitals

SKIN CANCER TRIPLES IN WOMEN UNDER 40
The rate of basal cell and squamous cell cancers rose from 13 per 100,000 women in the late 1970's to 32 per 100,000 in 2003. This indicates tanning is still very popular and will show rising rates of melanoma in the near future. See the article in full by the author from the Mayo Clinic by clicking on read more.

http://www.tustison.com/melfaq.html
Melanoma FAQ This FAQ was written as a public service, and is intended as an educational aid. Nothing herein should be construed as medical advice. Introduction Melanoma is a type of cancer, originating in the melanocytes, the cells containing color. Approximately 47,700 cases per year are currently diagnosed in the United States alone, and the incidence is increasing at the rate of 4.3% per year, one of the fastest increases in occurence rates of all cancers. In about 2% of occurences, the disease is present even though no skin discoloration occurs. This is called amelanotic melanoma.
The American Cancer Society estimates that there are currently 480,000 cases of melanoma in America today and that there are 7,700 deaths per year from the disease. In the U.S., Europe and Australia there are 90,000 new cases diagnosed per year and 15,000 deaths annually. "According to the American Academy of Dermatology, one person dies from malignant melanoma every hour. The overall incidence rate for the disease is increasing faster than that of any other cancer and by the year 2000, an American's lifetime risk of developing melanoma will be one in 75. The disease is now the most commonly occurring cancer in women between the ages of 25 and 29 and is second only to breast cancer in women ages 30 to 34. " - Sept. 24, 1996 /PRNewswire; SOURCE: Schering-Plough Corporation. When melanoma spreads, it often affects other places on the skin, lymph nodes, lungs, liver, brain or bones. Such secondary spread is referred to as Metastatic Melanoma..
