Well-nourished children perform better in school, grow into healthy adults and in turn give their children a better start in life. Well-nourished women face fewer risks during pregnancy and childbirth, and their children set off on firmer developmental paths, both physically and mentally. When the ambitious goal of halving child malnutrition was adopted in 1990, over a third of the world's under-fives - some 174 million children - were malnourished.
Malnutrition is implicated in more than half of all child deaths worldwide. Malnourished children have lowered resistance to infection; they are more likely to die from common childhood ailments like diarrhoeal diseases and respiratory infections, and for those who survive, frequent illness saps their nutritional status, locking them into a vicious cycle of recurring sickness and faltering growth. Their plight is largely invisible: three quarters of the children who die from causes related to malnutrition were only mildly or moderately undernourished, showing no outward sign of their vulnerability.

Vegan parents on trial for baby's severe malnutrition
By Harriet Ryan
Court TV

Story Tools (Court TV) Silva Swinton and her husband, Joseph, followed a strict vegan diet in their Queens home. They swore off meat and dairy products and existed on a regiment of vegetables, grains, seeds and nuts. When Silva gave birth to a daughter, Ice, in July 2000, they put the newborn on the same plan. Instead of breast milk or baby formula, Ice Swinton got herbal tea, flax seed oil, fruit juices and a homemade soy drink. The result, authorities say, was a health catastrophe that rises to the level of a crime. At 15 months, the girl weighed only 10 pounds and had no teeth. She could not sit up or talk and had a swollen abdomen. Doctors diagnosed her with severe malnutrition and rickets, and the Queens district attorney said it was one of the worst cases of neglect he'd seen. Her parents are now on trial in Queens Supreme Court on first-degree assault charges that could land them each in jail for 25 years. The Swintons, both 32, maintain they are loving parents who doted on Ice and thought the diet was best for her and her little brother, Ini, who was born after the couple's arrest. Both children are in foster care. In his opening statement last Tuesday, Silva Swinton's attorney, Christopher Shella, told the jury of nine women and three men, "At the end of the trial, you'll find that the choices they made were not criminal, but human."

Water-related diseases Malnutrition Malnutrition is a major health problem, especially in developing countries. Water supply, sanitation and hygiene, given their direct impact on infectious disease, especially diarrhoea, are important for preventing malnutrition. Both malnutrition and inadequate water supply and sanitation are linked to poverty. The impact of repeated or persistent diarrhoea on nutrition-related poverty and the effect of malnutrition on susceptibility to infectious diarrhoea are reinforcing elements of the same vicious circle, especially amongst children in developing countries. The disease and how it affects people Malnutrition essentially means “bad nourishment”. It concerns not enough as well as too much food, the wrong types of food, and the body's response to a wide range of infections that result in malabsorption of nutrients or the inability to use nutrients properly to maintain health. Clinically, malnutrition is characterized by inadequate or excess intake of protein, energy, and micronutrients such as vitamins, and the frequent infections and disorders that result. People are malnourished if they are unable to utilize fully the food they eat, for example due to diarrhoea or other illnesses (secondary malnutrition), if they consume too many calories (overnutrition), or if their diet does not provide adequate calories and protein for growth and maintenance (undernutrition or protein-energy malnutrition).

Hunger and malnutrition stalk North Korea
Just eight World Food Program biscuits a day will save this malnourished child By Jamie FlorCruz CNN's Beijing Bureau Chief (CNN) More disturbing images of hungry North Korean children filtered out of Pyongyang this week at the end of a visit by a team of World Food Programme officials. In a pediatric hospital in Nampo City, southwest of the capital Pyongyang, emaciated children, ill with diarrhea or malnourished, lie listless in beds with their mothers, some fastened with drips to give them basic sustenance. "The drips were very crude, almost like water bottles with plastic tubing coming out," says Catherine Bertini, WFP executive director. "We saw other children who had marks on their faces from various stages of malnutrition. These children were in very bad shape." It's a near replay of chilling pictures from past years of dying children, their stomachs bloated, arms hanging like twigs and eyes staring vacant.

Nutrition Screening Initiative
The Nutrition Screening Initiative (NSI) is a broad, multi-disciplinary effort led by partner organizations the American Academy of Family Physicians and American Dietetic Association and a diverse coalition of more than 25 national health, aging, and medical organizations. Founded in 1989, the goal of NSI is to promote the integration of nutrition screening and intervention into health care for older adults. NSI considers all aspects of health care for older adults as an opportunity to enhance cost-effective nutrition care. To this end, NSI formed alliances with professionals in nutrition, dentistry, pharmacology, mental health, managed care, home care, and community social services. NSI uses a multi-faceted strategy that includes research, professional education, consumer outreach, and policy. The Nutrition Screening Initiative is funded in part by a grant from Ross Products Division of Abbott Laboratories, Inc. About NSI Learn more about the Nutrition Screening Initiative (NSI).

Malnutrition
Definition
Malnutrition is the condition that develops when the body does not get the right amount of the vitamins minerals , and other nutrients it needs to maintain healthy tissues and organ function. Description
Undernutrition

Malnutrition occurs in people who are either undernourished or over-nourished. Undernutrition is a consequence of consuming too few essential nutrients or using or excreting them more rapidly than they can be replaced. Infants, young children, and teenagers need additional nutrients. So do women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Nutrient loss can be accelerated by diarrhea , excessive sweating, heavy bleeding (hemorrhage), or kidney failure. Nutrient intake can be restricted by age-related illnesses and conditions, excessive dieting, severe injury, serious illness, a lengthy hospitalization, or substance abuse. The leading cause of death in children in developing countries is protein-energy malnutrition. This type of malnutrition is the result of inadequate intake of calories from proteins, vitamins, and minerals. Children who are already undernourished can suffer from protein-energy malnutrition when rapid growth, infection, or disease increases the need for protein and essential minerals. Overnutrition
In the United States, nutritional deficiencies have generally been replaced by dietary imbalances or excesses associated with many of the leading causes of

Malnutrition
What is malnutrition? Malnutrition is a nutritional disorder resulting from not having enough food, or enough of the right food, for a long time. Everyone needs good food to be healthy. Refugees and displaced people are particularly vulnerable to malnutrition because they are forced to flee on short notice and do not have enough time to bring much food with them. Sometimes they must travel for days or weeks with little or no access to food. Who is most at risk of malnutrition? Children under 5 years of age are most at risk because they are growing rapidly and have a hard time fighting off disease. Malnutrition can have long-term effects by stunting growth or causing mental retardation. It is a key factor in the deaths of six million children each year. How about adults? Pregnant and nursing mothers are the most vulnerable because they need more calories and nutrients than other adults. Because they are usually isolated and have a harder time accessing food, the elderly are also at high risk. Malnourished adults are more susceptible to serious diseases like tuberculosis because their bodies are weakened.

Malnutrition Kills Millions
1 Liberia 1996, Roger Job

3 Liberia 1996, Roger Job 1 Children who are severely malnourished are sent to a therapeutic, or intensive-care, feeding center. Here they are weighed and measured to get a more accurate idea of their condition. They then receive up to eight meals of specially prepared food around the clock for several weeks until they have gained enough weight to be released from the feeding center. 2 When large groups of children are discovered to be malnourished, aid workers use a "MUAC" (Middle-Upper-Arm Circumference) bracelet to quickly assess the nutritional status of all the children in a group. The measurement on the MUAC lets the aid worker know how malnourished the child is, and what to do next. In Sudan in 1998, thousands of starving children were screened using the MUAC. 3 Children who are moderately malnourished receive an extra supply of highly nutritious food to bring home from a supplementary feeding center. Malnutrition is the world's biggest killer of children, contributing to six million deaths a year. It can kill outright, or leave its victims especially vulnerable to other deadly diseases, like measles and acute respiratory infections, or mental or physical disability. You may have arrived at the refugee camp malnourished because war has interrupted farming and commerce in your home area.
