3 October 2002
There are up to half a billion new cases of malaria every year. Here, Nature publishes the complete genome sequence of Plasmodium falciparum , the main cause of human malaria. This landmark achievement is accompanied by the complete sequence of Plasmodium yoelii , the infectious agent in rodent malaria, providing the malaria community with both a human pathogen and its animal model simultaneously. In addition to our other freely available genome sequences , the malaria special issue also contains state-of-the-art global genomic analysis of the primary sequence. This week also sees the publication in Science of the genome sequence of the malaria carrier, the mosquito Anopheles gambiae . The simultaneous publication of these two sets of papers provides insights that will accelerate vaccine and drug design, as well as intervention into malarial transmission. Nature's Plasmodium sequence papers are available free online in perpetuity, as with all our published genomes. All other related content from Nature's Nature

Malaria rising as DDT use falls, scientist says
WASHINGTON (Reuters) Malaria rates are climbing in poor countries that have stopped using the pesticide DDT to control the deadly disease, a tropical diseases expert warned on Tuesday. Donald Roberts, speaking for a coalition that is promoting DDT as a means of controlling malaria in developing countries, said the chemical was safe if sprayed in small amounts inside homes to repel mosquitoes that carry the parasite which causes malaria.

General Concepts
Clinical Manifestations
Initially patients have fever, chills, sweating, headache, weakness, and other symptoms mimicking a "viral syndrome." Later, severe disease may develop, with an abnormal level of consciousness, severe anemia, renal failure, and multisystem failure.
Classification
Plasmodia are protozoa. Only the species Plasmodium falciparum P vivax P malariae, and P ovale are usually infectious for humans. Of these, P falciparum is the most dangerous.
Structure and Life Cycle
In nature, uninucleate sporozoites in the salivary glands of infected mosquitoes are injected into a human host when the mosquito feeds. The sporozoites rapidly invade liver parenchymal cells, where they mature into liverstage schizonts, which burst to release 2,000 to 40,000 uninucleate merozoites. In P vivax and P ovale infections, maturation of the schizont may be delayed for 1 to 2 years. Each merozoite can infect a red blood cell. Within the red cell, the merozoite matures either into a uninucleate gametocyte-the sexual stage, infectious for Anopheles mosquitoes-or, over 48 to 72 hours, into an erythrocyticstage schizont containing 10 to 36 merozoites. Rupture of the schizont releases these merozoites, which infect other red cells. If a vector mosquito ingests gametocytes, the gametocytes develop in the mosquito gut to gametes, which undergo fertilization and mature in 2 to 3 weeks to sporozoites.

Malaria control tops U.S., world concerns
From staff and wire reports (CNN) U.S. lawmakers have agreed to help fight the worldwide spread of the devastating mosquito-borne illness malaria. The measure was made official this week as President Clinton signed a bill called the International Malaria Control Act. The legislation, signed Wednesday, authorizes $50 million for the U.S. fiscal year 2001 and fiscal year 2002 to prevent and treat malaria in the developing world.

Parents Infections Parasitic Infections (Worms, Lice, etc.)
Malaria is an infection that is common in hot, tropical areas but can also occur (rarely) in temperate climates. It is caused by one-celled parasites of the Plasmodium species. These parasites are transferred from person to person through the bite of an infected mosquito. A mosquito becomes infected with malaria after biting someone who already has the disease. Malaria is rarely contagious from person to person; from mother to child in "congenital malaria," or through blood transfusion, organ donation or shared needles. It is typically transmitted by the bite of a mosquito that has previously bitten someone with malaria. Signs and Symptoms
Other symptoms of malaria include headache, nausea, aches and pains all over the body (especially the back and abdomen), and an abnormally large spleen. When malaria affects the brain, a child may have convulsions or lose consciousness. If malaria affects the kidneys, the amount of urine produced by the child may be abnormally low. In falciparum malaria , the episode of fever and chills is especially intense, and this variety may be fatal in about 20% of cases.

Pentagon officials said Tuesday the 10 were medically evacuated to the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, on Monday. They include eight Marines and two Navy sailors. The news comes one day after 33 Marines were sent to Germany and Bethesda for treatment. ( Full Story Twelve of the Marines evacuated Monday are listed as having contracted malaria and two are listed in serious condition in Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany. All the affected Marines and sailors are with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) aboard the USS Iwo Jima stationed off the coast of Liberia. The MEU is part of a 150-member Quick Reaction Force sent to the Liberian capital to assist in the peacekeeping mission in the war-torn country last month. The troops were ashore between August 15 and August 26 before they returned to the Iwo Jima.
