E-Mail This Article Published on Wednesday, January 7, 2004 by CommonDreams.org Could Mad Cow Disease Already be Killing Thousands of Americans Every Year? by Michael Greger, M.D. October 2001, 34-year-old Washington State native Peter Putnam started losing his mind. One month he was delivering a keynote business address, the next he couldn't form a complete sentence. Once athletic, soon he couldn't walk. Then he couldn't eat. After a brain biopsy showed it was Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, his doctor could no longer offer any hope. "Just take him home and love him," the doctor counseled his family.[1,2,3] Peter's tragic death, October 2002, may have been caused by Mad Cow disease. It is now considered an "incontestable fact" that these human deaths in Britain were caused by Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), or Mad Cow disease.[9] Bovine means "cow or cattle," spongiform means "sponge-like," and encephalopathy means "brain disease." Mad Cow disease is caused by unconventional pathogens called prionsliterally infectious proteinswhich, because of their unique structure, are practically invulnerable, surviving even incineration[10] at temperatures hot enough to melt lead.[11] The leading theory as to how cows got Mad Cow disease in the first place is by eating diseased sheep infected with a sheep spongiform encephalopathy called scrapie.[12] In humans, prions can cause Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), a human spongiform encephalopathy whose clinical picture can involve weekly deterioration into blindness and epilepsy as one's brain becomes riddled with tiny holes.

MAD COW DISEASE Written by, Suzanne Sutton in 1997 Mad Cow Disease, known scientifically as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in cattle, is an incurable spongy degenaration of the brain and central nervous system. A similar complex disease in humans, known as Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD), acts like an accelerated form of Alzheimer's, and is characterized by an irreversible degeneration of brain tissue-holes formed in the brain, disabling and finally killing the victim. The fear of this unusually cruel and fatal neurological disease has sent shock waves throughout Europe and around the globe, creating one of the biggest consumer panics ever experienced in the industrialized world. QUESTIONS How do cattle and humans contract this disease?
Surely...Proper authorities in this country are taking actions to prevent this disease?

...Shifting from beef to other meats such as pork, poultry...is not this the safe, sane thing to do?

Symptoms of CJD...resemble those of Alzheimer's...Could there be a connection?
... Facts you should know about Mad Cow Disease! Q. How do cattle and humans contract this disease?

WASHINGTON (CNN) The first apparent case of mad cow disease in the United States has been discovered, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said Tuesday. Two tests have been carried out on meat from the cow, enabling Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman to call the case a "presumptive positive." A sample is being flown to England for a third test to confirm the case. Bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or BSE, is linked to a similar form of the incurable and fatal brain-wasting disease in humans, called variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, or vCJD. There have been a small number of cases of vCJD reported worldwide, primarily in the United Kingdom, in people who ate BSE-contaminated meat.

What is mad cow disease?
Mad cow disease is a fatal neurological disease that slowly destroys the brain and spinal cord ( central nervous system ) of cattle. It also is known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or BSE.
Can people get mad cow disease?
No, people cannot get mad cow disease. However, in rare cases they may get a human form of mad cow disease called variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) if they eat nerve tissue (the brain and spinal cord) of cattle that were infected with mad cow disease. Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is a fatal condition that destroys the brain and spinal cord. There is no evidence that people can get mad cow disease from eating muscle meat—which is used for ground beef, roasts, and steaks—or from consuming milk or milk products. People who develop vCJD cannot spread the disease to other people through casual contact. It is not likely that a person could get vCJD from a blood transfusion because all blood in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada is tested before it is transfused. From 1995 through August 2004, 147 human cases of vCJD were reported in the United Kingdom, 7 in France, and 1 each in Canada, Ireland, Italy, and the United States.

Tests have confirmed that an American cow killed in November 2004 was infected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), more popularly known as mad cow disease. This is the second case of BSE in the US. The first case, in December 2003, resulted in many countries banning imports of American beef, only a third of which have since been reversed. BSE is a brain disease in cows that was first recognized in Great Britain in 1986. BSE is one of several transmissible spongiform encepholopathies (TSE) . TSE diseases leave the brains they infect riddled with holes, creating a sponge-like texture (hence the term "Spongiform"). Among other animal TSEs, the one most familiar to farmers is scrapie , which has long been known to infect sheep (it was called "scrapie" because infected sheep would scrape themselves against trees and other objects, to relieve the itching sensation caused by the disease). Scientists believe that transmission of BSE to humans has resulted in approximately 145 deaths in Great Britain since the beginning of the mad cow outbreak. It appears that brain infections similar to BSE and scrapie occur in many different species of animals, from humans to minks. Among human TSE diseases, the first recognized was

House panel holding hearings on mad cow disease implications
WASHINGTON (CNN) A Senate panel opens hearings today on the U.S. government response to the threat of mad cow disease and whether enough is being done to keep the threat of the illness out of the United States. Representatives from the U.S. Department of Health (USDA), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the beef industry and consumer advocates are expected to testify at the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Consumer Affairs, Foreign Commerce and Tourism hearing. Mad cow disease has been back in the spotlight, following the USDA's seizure of a flock of sheep in Vermont last month. Some of those sheep had tested positive for scrapie, a disease similar to mad cow disease. "The U.S. has had firewalls in place to protect the cattle population from getting infected with mad cow disease and there are some gaps in these firewalls," according to Caroline Smith DeWaal, Director of the Food Safety Program fir the Center for Science in the Public (CSPI).

Mad Cow Disease For over 30 years, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Department of Agriculture have been flirting with a mad cow disease epidemic. The public has largely been kept in the dark about regulatory decisions leading toward this potential public health catastrophe and even about the dangers associated with eating contaminated meat and meat products. Recently, some of the glaring deficiencies in the regulation of the U.S. meat production system were revealed when a cow with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) was discovered in Washington. Mad cow disease, or BSE, belongs to a group of related brain-wasting diseases known as "transmissible spongiform encephalopathies" (TSEs). While TSEs are known to occur spontaneously, they also are spread through cattle herds by feeding infected nervous system tissue to other animals. Beginning in the 1970s, the meat rendering industry began processing dead, dying, disabled, and diseased animals for use in livestock feedand pet feed as a way to increase the protein consumption of cattle, pigs, sheep, and poultry (cattle can get the disease by

Report: Mad cow disease still threatens U.S.
Fears of mad cow disease originated in Great Britain. From Jeanne Meserve CNN Washington Bureau WASHINGTON (CNN) The federal government is not doing enough to ensure that mad cow disease is kept out of the United States, a report from the General Accounting Office said Tuesday. The Department of Agriculture called the report flawed. If infected animals and products did enter the country, the report said, steps now being taken by the federal government might not detect it or keep it from spreading. It took the Agriculture Department to task for failing to test many high-risk animals that die on farms, and cited weaknesses in USDA and Food and Drug Administration import controls. According to the report, FDA record-keeping is so flawed that the agency does not know to what extent industry is complying with the ban on using prohibited proteins in feed and has yet to identify and inspect all firms subject to the ban. Some non-compliant firms have not been re-inspected for two or more years, and in some instances no enforcement action was taken even though the firms had failed multiple inspections, the report said.
