Experts say low risk of mad cow disease in United States
WASHINGTON (AP) The mad cow crisis gripping Europe has so far spared the United States, and experts say there is no reason for Americans to worry about their meat. The risk of mad cow disease, or bovine spongiform encephalopathy, in the United States is "extremely low" because of bans on imported cattle and a restriction on cattle feed, according to a recent report by the Council for Agricultural Science and Technology, a nonprofit organization of scientific societies.

Theories of Mad Cow Disease
JAMA August 14, 1996 DC Capital Conference spring 1996 A dissenting view on the cause of mad cow disease came from Frank O. Bastian, MD, profesor of pathology at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine, Mobile, who outlined his theory that mad cow disease is caused by a conventional microorganism, a spiroplasma. Bastian spoke at a symposium held by the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases. Bastian regards the prion theory as a red herring. The cause of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs), he says, is a conventional microorganisma mollicute or, more specifically, a spiroplasma. "The infection-related protein is produced by the host in response to the infection," he says. He bases his conclusion on 3 premises: 1. Twenty years of his research indicates a role for spiroplasma. The evidence includes the following: spiroplasma-like inclusions were seen in brain biopsies from patients with CJD ( Arch Pathol Lab Med.

Senate hears testimony on mad cow disease
From Peter Hartogs and Miriam Falco CNN Medical Unit WASHINGTON (CNN) There is very little chance that bovine spongiform encephalopathy BSE, or mad cow disease will enter the United States, a panel of scientists and industry experts told senators Wednesday. But consumer advocates said even more needs to be done to ensure it is kept out. BSE is linked to a human brain-wasting disease new variant Creutzfeldt-Jacob Disease (nvCJD) that has killed some 80 Europeans, mostly Britons, since the mid-1990s. Related sites Members of the Senate Commerce subcommittee on consumer affairs, foreign commerce and tourism, asking if current government standards are sufficient to keep the diseases out of the United States, heard testimony from representatives of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Food and Drug Administration, National Institutes of Health, beef industry and consumer groups. "The likelihood of BSE in the United States is very low," said veterinarian William Hueston of the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. "We realize there are potential exposures to BSE in the United States, but they are very, very few and very low."

Table of Contents Introduction to How Mad Cow Disease Works What is Mad Cow Disease? How BSE Works Secret Agent The Prion Hypothesis Control and Prevention Lots More Information To the cattle industry, an outbreak of mad cow disease is an ever-looming nightmare. In the 1980s and '90s, the brain disorder infected 180,000 livestock in Europe and claimed dozens of human lives, devastating the British cattle industry. Britain, the United States and most other major cattle-producing nations have imposed stringent measures to control the disease, but another outbreak is a very real possibility. In this article, we'll discuss what mad cow disease is, how it works, what the consequences for humans are and what is being done to control and prevent its occurrence. Courtesy Agricultural Research Service , USDA POSTED 8 FEB 2001 Years after it was supposedly vanquished, mad cow disease, the brain infection that kills cows and some people who eat them, is on a comeback. The disease has spread widely in Europe, and there are danger signs in the United States, where it's never appeared. Mad cow disease is one of several fatal brain diseases called transmissible spongiform encephalopathies, or TSEs. (Want The Why Files guide to mad cow lingo?) The jargon says it all: These infectious diseases shoot the brain full of holes, making it look like a sponge. The TSEs were once considered unlikely to infect other species, but some seem to move rather easily among animals. Most glaringly, many scientists believe people can get vCJD (variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease) from eating mad cows. The awkward name reflects the similarity to Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), a deadly brain illness that strikes about one person per million per year, due to genetic or unknown causes. While CJD mainly afflicts the elderly, vCJD appears among younger people, almost certainly from eating mad cow meat. The gruesome death starts with mood swings, numbness and uncontrolled body movements. Eventually the mind is destroyed, somewhat like Alzheimer's, another brain-wrecking disease.

Presidential Impeachment
According to Smith Ray, Doctor of Political Theory, Camden Polytechnic University in Maine he is "quite surprised that there has been so little talk of impeachment of President Bush, except on the part of the far left. "When serious political researchers reflect on the Clinton impeachment," Ray remarked, "we really have to laugh. There was so little of substance there. OK he had sex with an intern and lied about it. What about the magnitude of lies that has taken us into Iraq?" Ray acknowledges that Bush will not be impeached because Republicans hold all the power in Washington at the moment. But that hasn't stopped Ray from teaching a course on impeachment and actually preparing the appropriate articles. "This process is quite easy and straightforward," he acknowledged. "The President took America to war under false pretenses, misrepresented the intelligence, linked Iraq with 9/11, and continued to argue that we must fight the terrorists in Iraq so we don't fight them in America." Ray notes that only one American has said in public and on the record that president Buish lied to the country and that is Cindy Sheehan, who was camped out near the Bush ranch waiting for a meeting with the President.

33. Mad Cow Disease
Madcow-facts presents the latest information, news and analysis on mad cow disease, also known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).
http://www.mad-cow-facts.com/about.htm
What is Mad Cow Disease? Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) is the scientific term for a disease which affects the brains of cattle. Soon after BSE was first discovered in the United Kingdom, it became more commonly known as " mad cow disease ," most likely because of the emotional response it generated with the public. Unlike most livestock diseases, BSE is not caused by a bacterial or viral infection, but rather is the result of infectious prions. These are unique proteins that may bond with a cow's brain cells, altering their composition and ultimately leading to the animal's death. Mad cow disease is believed to be transferred to cattle when they eat these infectious proteins, yet science has shown the disease can only affect those cows that are genetically susceptible. A similar disease, scrapie, has affected sheep in the United Kingdom since at least the mid- 18th century. Scientists believe that through centuries of close contact in rural England, the disease managed to transfer to cattle, where it was first identified in 1985. In the years that followed, more than 180,000 cows became infected in the U.K. The British practice of processing central nervous tissue into animal feed allowed the prions to spread rapidly through their herds. As the British exported feed and live animals to various regions of the world, cases of BSE began to appear in other countries.

  • Mad cow disease was first reported in the United Kingdom in 1986, peaking in 1993 with almost 1,000 new cases per week.
  • In 1996, variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (vCJD) was detected in humans and linked to the mad cow epidemic. Eating contaminated meat and cattle products is presumed to be the cause.
  • Both are fatal brain diseases with unusually long incubation periods, often lasting years.
  • To date, no case of mad cow disease has been identified in the United States.
  • As of April 2, 2002, a total of 125 cases of vCJD had been reported in the world: 117 from the United Kingdom, six from France, and one each from Ireland and Italy.

Animal Pharm by Mark Purdey Reprinted from the website of the The Weston A. Price Foundation As an organic farmer, Mark Purdey resisted the order to spray his cattle with organophosphates for warble fly and went to court for a judicial review; he won and was exempted from using the spray. No cows born in his herd developed BSE (mad cow disease). He has contributed numerous articles on the subject of BSE to scientific journals. He farms in Somerset, UK. This article appeared in Wise Traditions in Food, Farming and the Healing Arts , the quarterly magazine of the Weston A. Price Foundation , Spring 2000. As the first snowstorm of winter hit the isolated hill where I farm, I pitched out the last forkfuls of hay to my cattle before nightfall. Much like the whirlwinds of snow surging all around me, my brain was turning over and over the catalogue of injustices that successive governments had levied onto the farming community over BSE. I felt paralysed and powerless in the encroaching snowstorm.
