Supporting Research Macular degeneration is a painless, degenerative eye disease that affects more than 10 million Americans. It is the leading cause of legal blindness in persons over the age of 55 in the United States. While complete blindness does not occur in most people with the disorder, macular degeneration often interferes with reading, driving, or performing other daily activities. There are two forms of macular degeneration. Dry macular degeneration affects about 90% of those with the disease and causes gradual loss of central vision, initially only in one eye. Wet macular degeneration, which accounts for 90% of all severe vision loss from the disease, involves a very sudden loss of central vision. Signs and Symptoms Macular degeneration is accompanied by the following signs and symptoms:
  • Slightly blurred vision Dry type: a blurred spot in the central field of vision, which may become larger and darker

Macular Degeneration
Age related macular degeneration is the most common cause of legal blindness in developed countries. It affects about six percent of Americans between the ages of 65 and 75, and almost 20% of those over 75. In this condition, yellowish deposits called drusen accumulate beneath a part of the eye known as the retina and cause it to lose some of its function. Because the central part of the retina, known as the macula, is most affected, this process is called "macular" degeneration. It has been known for nearly 100 years that there are some forms of macular degeneration that are inherited. In fact, Best's disease, which can affect children as young as one year of age, has been referred to as "juvenile macular degeneration". Other conditions known as "dominant drusen," "cuticular drusen," and "pattern dystrophy," are also inherited and can cause visual problems very similar to age related macular degeneration. Because inherited conditions can be studied with powerful molecular techniques more easily than non-inherited ones, we have been applying such methods to the study of inherited forms of macular degeneration in the hope that a better understanding of these conditions will lead to better treatment for the more common age-related disorder. We have been using a technique known as chromosome linkage analysis to look for genes that cause macular degeneration. Families with inherited macular degeneration are examined and blood samples are taken for DNA analysis. Then, a computer program looks for a relationship between certain "markers" in the DNA and the presence of the macular disease.

Retinitis Pigmentosa and Retinal Degeneration
Retinitis Pigmentosa ( RP ) is the name given to a group of eye diseases often characterised by night blindness and the gradual loss of peripheral vision. RP causes visual field loss, and may lead to eventual blindness, by affecting the light sensitive photoreceptors in the retina. A genetic and degenerative disease affecting over four million people world wide and thousands of Australians, RP is a common form of retinal degeneration ( RD ). Related conditions include Macular Degeneration, Usher Syndrome, Choroideremia, Leber's Amaurosis and Retinoschisis. On This Page -

Vitamin A: A Role in Macular Degeneration and Fractures
Q: A:
First, let me explain macular degeneration for our readers who aren't familiar with the condition. The macula is a very sensitive area located in the center of the retina. The retina, of course, is the tissue at the back of the eye that converts the light and images we see into electrical impulses and sends these nerve signals to the brain, where we interpret them visually. Macular degeneration refers to the deterioration of the macula, which can lead to vision loss. Age Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) occurs in two forms: dry and wet. Dry ARMD occurs when the light-sensitive cells in the macula slowly break down, gradually blurring central vision in the affected eye. As dry ARMD gets worse, you may see a blurred spot in the center of your vision. Over time, as less of the macula functions, central vision in the affected eye can be lost gradually. You may notice you have difficulty recognizing faces, or need more light for reading and other tasks. Dry ARMD generally affects both eyes, but vision can be lost in one eye while the other eye seems unaffected. One of the most common early signs of dry ARMD is drusen. Drusen are yellow deposits under the retina. They often are found in people over age 60. Your eye care professional can detect drusen during a comprehensive dilated eye exam.

This is my MD Story As it happens, Dr. M. was not kidding when he told me the reason I suddenly couldn't see was that I was suffering from Macular Degeneration a disease of the retina which attacks some people slowly and insidiously, and others, like myself, with absolutely no warning. On Friday the 13th of November, 1998, as I was quietly typing, I suddenly could not see well enough to read. The reason? I had lost the central vision in my left eye. It had gone from 20/20 to 20/400+ quite literally "in the blink of an eye". This is a good illustration of what the written page looks like to me.

( updated AMD Research information available )
The Christmas of 1995 will be one which I shall never forget. With all the normal hustle and bustle of pre-Christmas organizing we sometimes ignore what's going on inside our own bodies. Then comes the stark reality that something is wrong. That is what happened to me and I hope it never happens to you. In these next few pages I shall tell you about an eye disease that I developed and how I came to grips with it. I spent the better part of a month scouring the Internet for information relating to AMD and CNV in hopes of understanding what my future held. I have included numerous links to other AMD and Ophthalmology pages and I'll show you some really gross pictures of my own eyes if you like. If you know what to watch out for, you might be able to receive treatment before its too late. Knowledge is a powerful drug that soothes the soul but only if taken in the right quantity and used with the right attitude.

Angeles Vision Clinic The web site has detailed information on many other eye conditions. Please feel free to visit our Home Page or check out other eye conditions on our Eye Conditions page WHAT IS MACULAR DEGENERATION AND ITS TREATMENT OPTIONS? What Is Macular Degeneration? Age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) is the most common cause of irreversible vision loss in Americans over the age of 60. It is estimated that 10 million Americans will experience this age-related visual impairment during their retirement years. Macular degeneration is a disorder of the retina, the light-sensitive inner lining of the back of the eye. The macula is a small, central portion of the retina which is necessary for sharp, "straight ahead" vision needed for reading, driving a car or recognizing faces. There are a number of abnormalities associated with the term "age-related macular degeneration." They range from mild changes with no decrease in vision to abnormalities severe enough to result in the loss of all "straight ahead" vision. Macular degeneration does not cause total blindness because the remaining and undamaged parts of the retina around the macula continue to provide "side" vision. There are two main types of macular degeneration, "dry" and "wet," both are discussed in the next section.
