Researching the Cause of Macular Degeneration
The causes of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) are still not understood, but researchers at the Medical College of Wisconsin continue to seek answers through research at the cellular level. Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss for individuals over age 60, affecting 13 million Americans. Macular degeneration affects light-sensitive photoreceptor cells in the macula, the center of the retina at the back of the eye. While it doesn't cause total blindness, the disease destroys central vision so reading, watching TV and driving are impossible. There is no cure, and treatments are very limited. Like most age-related diseases, AMD is likely to have many causes, including both genetic and "toll of years" components. A gene or several genes may predispose the retina to cellular changes resulting in macular degeneration. But whether or not a person with a genetic predisposition gets the disease also depends upon how the aging process itself affects cells.

Understanding age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
Summary: Designed to help you understand more about your eye condition, this guide has been written by our experienced eye health team. Understanding age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
What is the macula?
The eye is shaped like a ball. The pupil, close to the front, is the opening, which allows light to enter the eye. Just behind the pupil is the lens, which focuses the light on the retina at the back of the eye. The retina is a delicate tissue, which converts the light into images, and sends them to the brain. The macula is a small area at the very centre of the retina. The macula is very important and is responsible for what we see straight in front of us, allowing us to see fine detail for activities such as reading and writing, as well as our ability to see colour.

If you happened to be at the groundbreaking of UCLA’s Jules Stein Eye Institute (JSEI) in 1964, you might have run into celebrities like Gene Kelly, Bob Hope, or Bette Davis. And that would have been no surprise given that the Institute’s namesake and creator was a prominent, music-industry booking agent, who founded Music Corporation of America (MCA), which is now Universal Studios. more Nanoparticles: Good genes are coming in small packages FFB-funded investigator, Dr. Muna Naash at the University of Oklahoma, in collaboration with the biotechnology company Copernicus Therapeutics, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio, demonstrated that compacted DNA nanoparticles (CDN) may be a highly effective mechanism for the delivery of healthy genes to the eyes of people with retinal degenerative disease. Dr. Naash presented her findings in May 2005 at the 77th Annual Meeting of the Association for Research in Vision (ARVO).

Dr. White Explains Anti-Oxidants and Macular Degeneration "Anti-Oxidants is a class of substances, organic in nature. Vitamins C and E are in this category. Also Vitamin A, converted from beta-carotene, and selenium fall into this group. The pigmentation of fruits and vegetables is from Carotenoids and as anti-oxidants are believed preventive against stroke, cancer and heart related disease.
Inside the body antioxidants protect against particles called free radicals. Typically an oxygen molecule, a free radical searches for a molecule with which it can combine or 'oxidize'. The molecules that free radicals attack are cells within the body organs. Cancer and Macular Degeneration is a common result of cellular breakdown.
Anti-Oxidants act to combine with these free radicals before they have a chance to cause damage."
The Ocu-ForteTM was developed in Dr. White's detox clinic since 1985 and improved upon to the point of this product's capability today. Research has included intraocular photos of patients with Macular Degeneration . This and continuing global research indicates that antioxidants shows given this formula a definate slowing or arrest of the Macular Degenerative process.Major eye centers in this country have now accepted the fact that antioxidant supplements do have a useful place in treating this disease .The major problem is they know very little about antioxidants. . They only use small doses of vitamins and do not understand the poweful formulation and synergism of total combinations of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients.
