Macular Degeneration Overview
Macular degeneration is a disorder that includes a variety of eye diseases that affect your central vision. Central vision is what you see directly in front of you rather than what you see at the side (or periphery) of your vision.
Macular degeneration is caused when part of your retina deteriorates. The retina is the interior layer of your eye. The macula is the central portion of the retina and is responsible for detailed vision.
Age-related macular degeneration is the most common disease. Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of legal blindness in people older than 55 years in the United States. The disease affects more than 10 million Americans, including 23% of Americans older than 90 years. Because overall life expectancy continues to increase, age-related macular degeneration has become a major public health problem. There are 2 types of age-related macular degeneration:
  • Dry (atrophic) form: Multiple, small, round, yellow-white spots called drusen are the key identifiers for the

Macular Degeneration: Frequently Asked Questions
Reviewed by Dr. Michael DePaolis What exactly is macular degeneration? Is there a difference between macular degeneration and age-related macular degeneration? Is it true that macular degeneration is a growing problem? ... What macular degeneration treatments are currently available? 1. What exactly is macular degeneration? Macular degeneration is a condition in which the eye's macula breaks down, causing a gradual or sudden loss of central vision. [top] 2. Is there a difference between macular degeneration and age-related macular degeneration? Macular degeneration is usually age-related, affecting people over 65, so the terms are often used interchangeably. However, certain drugs can cause macular degeneration, and some cases are inherited as well. [top] 3. Is it true that macular degeneration is a growing problem? Yes. Dr. Burt Dubow, optometrist and board member, explains, "Experts think there are a number of reasons for this: more ultraviolet light in our environment due to a thinning ozone layer, people living longer, environmental pollutants, smoking, poor diet, obesity, etc." Another factor may be our aging population, since the risk for macular degeneration rises with age.

Acupuncture treatment for blindness caused by retinal and macular degeneration.
This is for all those who believe that there exists only one scientific medical system on the earth, and that is evidence based medicine or Modern Medicine or Allopathy as it is popularly known. Acupuncture has been critcised on the basis that the mechanism of action of Acupuncture is not known, often by those who forget that the mechanism of action of Aspirin, which is a most widely used drug, is still a mystery. They fail to see that many things happen because they happen. Undecomposed human bodies lying in the pyramids for thousands of years or the unstable state of mind of some sensitive individuals on fullmoon nights are the examples. And when a blind person with degenerated retina can see this beautiful world again or an eight-yearsold dumb girl starts composing sentences with the help of Acupuncture what else is needed to prove its worthiness. I hope that in future Allopathy will also cure such unfortunates in its own way, but the Acupuncture will be criticized in spite of its recognition by the WHO or FDA which proves its safety. I am myself a graduate in Modern Medicine, and fully understand the contribution made by this science towards human healing. This therefore is not against the Modern Medicine but against those who believe and propagate that the Acupuncture is not an effective and efficient medicine and unfortunately they have a say in today's world.

Mutations in the fibulin family of extracellular matrix proteins have been linked to macular degeneration. Previously, mutations in the fibulin 3 and fibulin 6 genes were shown to cause two forms of inherited macular degeneration (Stone et al, 1999; Schultz et al, 2003). Now, a number of missense mutations in the fibulin 5 gene have been implicated in the highly prevalent age-related form of macular degeneration by scientists at the University of Iowa (Stone et al, 2004).

Macular Degeneration
Overview Age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) is a degenerative condition of the macula (the central retina It is the most common cause of vision loss in the United States in those 50 or older, and its prevalence increases with age. AMD is caused by hardening of the arteries that nourish the retina. This deprives the sensitive retinal tissue of oxygen and nutrients that it needs to function and thrive. As a result, the central vision deteriorates. This example demonstrates what a patient with advanced macular degeneration sees. Macular degeneration varies widely in severity. In the worst cases, it causes a complete loss of central vision, making reading or driving impossible. For others, it may only cause slight distortion. Fortunately, macular degeneration does not cause total blindness since it does not affect the peripheral vision. What is the difference between wet and dry macular degeneration?

Australia's leading cause of blindness Breaking News: "Breakthrough results in AMD research announced in Montreal" The fight against age-related macular degeneration (AMD) gained an important weapon this month (July 2005), with news of a significant breakthrough in potential AMD treatment. This was reported at a large gathering in Montreal of leading retinal researchers. Researchers reported that a novel drug, ranibizumab (Lucentis ), is the first therapy to potentially halt and even reverse the deterioration in sight that occurs with patients suffering from wet AMD. More than 9 out of 10 patients in the clinical trial maintained or improved their vision following 12 months of treatment with the experimental therapy. In an interview with AMD Alliance International, Dr. Joan Miller, Harvard University, Chair of Ophthalmology said, “This is indeed a major advance in AMD treatment. Current treatments remain quite useful as they allow us to preserve vision in many cases, however this is the first time we have seen a treatment which improves vision lost because of AMD.” Please be aware that this potential treatment of Wet AMD is still in its research stage and as yet not available in Australia.
