Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in the United States and many European countries. The neovascular "wet" form of the disease is responsible for most (90%) of the severe loss of vision. There are approximately 200,000 new cases of wet macular degeneration in the United States each year. The average age of patients with the wet form of macular degeneration is the mid-70s. It rarely occurs before the age of 50. Wet macular degeneration is more common in whites, but occurs in all races. Please report any problems to:

Macular Degeneration Research AHAF's Macular Degeneration Research program was established in 1997 to fund research on and educate the public about macular degeneration. Macular degeneration is a common eye disease that causes deterioration of the macula, the central area of the retina, the paper-thin tissue at the back of the eye where light-sensitive cells send visual signals to the brain. Sharp, clear, 'straight ahead' vision is processed by the macula. Damage to the macula results in the development of blind spots and blurred or distorted vision. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a major cause of visual impairment in the United States and for people over age 65 it is the leading cause of legal blindness. At least 1 in 10 people over aged 65 suffer from AMD and as many as 1 in 4 in this age group exhibit early signs of the disease. Approximately 3.6 million Americans have AMD, and of those, 1.8 million experience serious visual impairment. Victims of AMD are often surprised and frustrated to find out how little is known about the causes and treatment of this blinding condition. The 'About Macular Degeneration' section has a wealth of information including the following:

Adult Macular Degeneration Dr. David Seftel M.D. Adult macular degeneration is traditionally described as that form of the disease that affects individuals over the age of 55 years. However, we have recently discovered that a significant number of these individuals may have a major genetic component that contributes to the disease. What does macular degeneration do to your vision?
Your retina contains an extraordinary photosensitive array of cells that line the back of your eye. The light falling onto these cells in the retina is transformed into electrical signals which are transmitted to the brain centers that process and interpret them. The most concentrated collection of photosensitive cells in your retina, including those that enable critical color and fine detail vision, are found in the Bulls-Eye center zone in an area called the macula.

Macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness
affecting more Americans
than cataracts and glaucoma combined.
F ew people are aware that macular degeneration is an incurable eye disease and that it is the leading cause of blindness for those aged 55 and older in the United States, affecting more than 10 million Americans. Macular degeneration is caused by the deterioration of the central portion of the retina, the inside back layer of the eye that records the images we see and sends them via the optic nerve from the eye to the brain. The retina's central portion, known as the macula, is responsible for focusing central vision in the eye, and it controls our ability to read, drive a car, recognize faces or colors, and see objects in fine detail. As people age, their chances for developing eye diseases increase dramatically. Unfortunately, the specific factors that cause macular degeneration are not conclusively known and research into this little-understood disease is limited by insufficient funding.

What is Low Vision?
Low Vision is a condition in which a person has some vision but it is limited.   This condition may interfere with daily pastimes such as reading and watching television.  People with low vision generally have some remaining vision with reduced sharpness, narrowed vision, haziness or blind areas.
Who has Low Vision?
About one out of every 6 Americans has low vision.  It can affect people of all ages.
What causes Low Vision?
Low vision is often the result of an injury, birth defect, the aging process, disease or condition such as ocular albinism, retinitis pigmentosa, or stargardts macular dystrophy.  If the condition develops later in life, it is usually caused by glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration or diabetes.
Can people with Low Vision be helped?
Yes!  Today many new optical devices and systems can help Low Vision patients see better.  However the patient must be motivated to see better and show a willingness to work toward that goal.
Company Profile
Low Vision Associates was founded in 1986 to help people with vision problems.  In that time, we have assisted thousands of patients.  Even many patients who were told by other doctors that "they could do nothing more to help them" have been helped here. Low Vision Associates specializes in fitting the latest eyeglass and contact lenses including telescopic and microscopic lenses, filtered lenses, high powered and prismatic lenses which may be helpful for many conditions.

Macular Degeneration
By Marilyn Haddrill
reviewed by Dr. Charles Slonim Macular degeneration, often called AMD or ARMD (for age-related macular degeneration), is the leading cause of vision loss and blindness in Americans aged 65 and older. Because older people represent an increasingly larger percentage of the general population, vision loss associated with AMD is a growing problem. Significant vision loss accompanying more advanced forms of AMD increases from fewer than 1% among individuals in their 60s to more than 15% among people in their 90s, according to the Feb. 17, 2004 edition of Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ). Archives of Ophthalmology in 2004 estimated that 1.75 million U.S. residents now have significant symptoms associated with age-related macular degeneration, with that number expected to grow to almost 3 million by 2020. AMD is a degenerative condition of the macula, which is the part of the retina responsible for the sharp, central vision needed to read or drive. Because AMD affects the macula, central vision loss may occur. Macular degeneration is diagnosed as either dry (non-neovascular) or wet (neovascular). The dry form is more common than the wet, with about 85%-90% of AMD patients diagnosed with dry AMD. The wet form of the disease usually leads to more serious vision loss.
