Mac's next memory offers improvements
From... by David Read (IDG) When users consider Mac performance, they tend to focus on the PowerPC processor and prospects for speedier G4 chips. But many other components affect system speed, and one of thesememoryis poised for advances that could lead to at least modestly improved performance in future generations of Apple hardware. Macs currently use stock PC100 RAM, but high-end PCs are employing a new memory called PC133 that increases bandwidth from 100MHz to 133MHz. In addition, some high-end models from Dell and other manufacturers use Rambus RAM (RDRAM), a new proprietary memory from Rambus that's up to 60 percent faster than PC133. Slated to appear at year's end is Double Data Rate RAM (DDR RAM), which will at least double PC100 bandwidth.

August 14: XDarwin Project to Switch from XFree86 to X.org
The next major X.Org release is in feature freeze. It adds a lot of new extensions and includes all the improvements to the XDarwin DDX from the top of the XFree86 tree. According to developer Torrey Lyons, the plan is for a release at the end of August. This is a very tight schedule and it needs testing on Darwin/Mac OS X. Any build failures and bug reports are very welcome. Support is anticipated for this release on Mac OS 10.1 - 10.3 and the latest OpenDarwin PPC and x86 builds. Microsoft preps Mac IE 5
Web posted at: 1:08 PM by Wendy J. Mattson, MacWEEK.com (IDG) Microsoft Corp. said Wednesday it will release Internet Explorer 5 for Mac by early February, followed by IE 5 and Outlook Express for Mac OS X as soon as Apple ships its new operating system. "We will release Mac OS X-native versions of IE and OE the day Mac OS X becomes available to customers," said Dick Craddock, product unit manager in Microsoft's Macintosh Business Unit.     Microsoft will demonstrate the IE 5 Web browser, which had been expected to ship late last summer, at this week's Macworld Expo in San Francisco. After the iPhone , Silence...
Following all the excitement yesterday, there's an amazing amount of press about the iPod nano and a lot of confusion concerning the ROKR iPhone , from which a general theme soon emerges - the nano is the new geek lust magnet, and the ROKR is completely sidelined. Which, all things considered, is as it should be. The hard-coded 100-song limit, however, is pretty dumb. In the meantime, people with decent phones (at least those with an USB interface or some sort of removable memory card) might want to look at SyncTunes , which did the job for my (it works with iTunes 5.0, and might even work on the ROKR itself - just use a card reader...).
NeXT Step Rising?
After Michael's round-up of comments on the new iTunes look and my own jab that Apple  might be coming up with black PowerBook s next (due to the nano 's "dark side" edition), up comes drunkenbatman's "Burnt Aqua" post (a must read, as always) and Brent Simmons, who points out that the new iTunes interface wouldn't look that much out of place in the old NeXT  desktop environment: Well

ARDI, a dormant emulation and reverse-engineering company:
We're the only company with Macintosh emulation software that allows Macintosh programs to run on non-Macintoshes without using Apple's Intellectual Property. We've written the fastest synthetic 680x0 CPU
News from July 5th 2005 ARDI has been dormant for years. I, Clifford Matthews , am ARDI's founder, and I have been doing non-emulation consulting since 2002. Although ARDI has had several employees and contractors earlier in its life, I'm the only one left. During the last few years, I've been an expensive consultant on projects that are completely unrelated to Macintosh emulation. As such, although I intended to tie up ARDI's loose ends, I instead spent my time meeting my client's needs during the work week and being a father and husband instead of doing ARDI work on my off hours. Apple's switch to Intel processors and their pending retirement of the Classic environment has prompted me to dust off the and Executor source code and see if there's a useful role for it in the future. Since Mac OS X is a much better operating system than Classic, and since Mac OS X on Intel will support Carbon applications, I don't see a need for our technology running on future Apple Intel hardware.
