What is cat scratch disease?
Cat scratch disease (CSD) is an infection that is thought to be caused by bacteria carried in cat saliva. Humans can get it if they are scratched, bitten or otherwise exposed to the saliva of an infected cat. Advertisement The disease is usually not serious. It typically involves swollen lymph glands and flu-like symptoms that resolve within a few weeks.

45. CAT SCRATCH DISEASE
The proper name for it is benign lymphoreticulosis, but is commonly calledeither ‘cat scratch fever’ CSF or ‘cat scratch disease’. CSD
http://www.penmarric.ns.ca/catcare/health/catscratch.htm
CAT SCRATCH DISEASE GC Penmarric's Periwinkle
Sadie age 10 months
This is a problem that everyone has heard of, and is concerned about, but in actuality, is rarely seen. The incidence runs about 2 or 3 per 100,000 population the USA,[ or affects 2400 people annually ]. The proper name for it is benign lymphoreticulosis, but is commonly called either ‘cat scratch fever’ [CSF] or ‘cat scratch disease’. [CSD] Cats that carry this disease are rarely ill themselves, so you really don’t know if you will become ill after a bite or a scratch, unless its your own cat and it is totally an indoor cat. You notice that there may be a problem 5 -50 days after being infected. This is one reason it could be missed, as people tend to forget they petted a cat 6 weeks before. It starts with a typically small lesion that looks like a mosquito bite. This is followed about 10-14 days later with swollen lymph glands, and this can hang around for several weeks or even months. It is rarely a severe illness for most people, but if you have a compromised immune system, such as people with HIV or chronic illness, then you should seek medical help when you are injured. You should also seek medical attention if you suspect you have this illness, because it has been linked to other problems as a complication [albeit rarely]. These include hepatitis, tonsillitis, pneumonia, arthritis, conjunctivitis and even convulsions and confusion in susceptible people. It may not be easy to actually diagnose this problem, as it mimics so many other things. Diagnosis often involves biopsy of the swollen lymph gland.

[Cat Scratch Fever, Benign Lymphoreticulosis, Benign nonbacterial Lymphadenitis, Bacillary Angiomatosis, Bacillary Peliosis Hepatis] SPECIES: cats AGENT: Controversial disease - it is not currently possible to definitively name the causative agent responsible for CSD. Felt to be either Afipia felis, a gram-negative rod or Rochalimaea henselae and Rochalimaea quintana. Both are members of class Proteobacteria and both are intracellular parasitic bacteria. RESERVOIR AND INCIDENCE: Associated with domestic cats throughout the USA, and worldwide. Over 6000 cases annually. Seen more often in men than in women . Have seen clusters of infection within families within a 2 to 3 week period, suggesting that shedding by cats may occur periodically. Other sources of infection have included scratches from other species including dogs, squirrels, and goats and from wounds induced by crab claws, barbed wire, and plant material. TRANSMISSION: 90% of patients have been exposed to a cat. 75% of these have been bitten, scratched, or licked. Most affected individuals are

By Martha A. Simpson, D.O., M.B.A.
Associate Professor of Family Medicine
Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine MOST VICTIMS OF CAT SCRATCH DISEASE RECOVER WITHOUT TREATMENT Question: Answer:
CSD is most common in young people under the age of 21. There are about 22,000 cases diagnosed in the United States every year. And, as the name implies, there is usually a history of a bite or scratch from a kitten or cat preceding the outbreak of the illness. A person often acquires CSD when a cat infected with certain bacteria, usually Bartonella henselae, bites or scratches him or her. It can also be contracted indirectly if a person is bitten by a flea that has previously fed on an infected cat.
In fact, the painful lymph nodes can remain swollen for several weeks and become moveable and compressible. Eventually, the lymph nodes often spontaneously regress. This may take up to a month or more. There can be complications from CSD, especially involving the eyes and brain, but these are rare and usually there is full recovery. Diagnosis of CSD is made when three of the following four criteria are met: history of a cat bite or scratch, positive skin test to CSD antigen or positive antibody test, all other explanations for the swollen lymph nodes have been ruled out, and characteristic lymph node lesions.

ANTHRAX
(Malignant pustule, wool-sorters' disease, charbon, malignant edema, splenic fever) An acute bacterial infection of humans and animals which may be rapidly fatal. The disease occurs worldwide and is enzootic in certain African and Asian countries. It is an occupational hazard of persons such as wool-sorters, fellmongers, knackermen, farm workers and veterinarians in contact with infected animals or their products (e.g., blood, wool, hides and bones). The causative agent is Bacillus anthracis (bacterium). RESERVOIR AND MODE OF TRANSMISSION: All domestic, zoo and wild animals are potentially at risk of infection. Anthrax bacilli are released from infected carcasses and form resistant spores on exposure to air. These spores contaminate soil for many years. Humans are usually infected by inoculation from direct contact with infected animals, carcasses or animal products and contaminated soil. Inhalation or ingestion of spores may occur. Animals are infected from contaminated feed, forage, water or carcasses. Laboratory accidents have occurred.
