June 20th - 3rd Anniversary of David's passing - Forever in our hearts... Forever on our minds Welcome to our Memorial home page dedicated to our son and brother David. We are the Schneider family, living in Southern Ontario, Canada. Let us introduce ourselves. Joyce Schneider is a high school teacher of Drama and Performing Arts. Her spouse, Michael, is a teacher in the same school, head of the same department, and teaches English as well as Drama and Performing Arts. As you can see, we have absolutely nothing in common! Our beautiful daughter, Mary, is 16 years old. She is an accomplished dancer and baseball player, loves acting and singing, and is now finishing grade 11 at her mom and dad's school, and loves it. Our boy David passed away on June 20th 1998 after a long and struggle with non-Hodgkin’s’ lymphoma at the age of 11. This Web sight was intended in part to be a celebration of his life and we are grateful that he was able to participate in its creation. It is our David who greets you when you click on the " Cat Gallery " link, along with his beloved Butterscotch; it was recorded just 4 days prior to his passing. We have a separate page detailing David’s

The human immune system is a fascinating network which protects us from all sorts of invading germs and parasites. It is composed of special bean-sized glands, called "lymph nodes," which filter the blood and destroy foreign invaders. These lymph nodes are connected to each other through an elaborate closed "circulation system" which eventually returns the purified lymph fluid to the bloodstream.
Specific immune cells, called "lymphocytes," are contained within the lymph nodes, and also within the skin, tonsils, spleen, liver and intestines to quickly recognize and react to invading germs. Without this lymph system, we would soon die of overwhelming infection. A complex variety of cancers can arise within this system, called "lymphomas."
Like any cancer, lymphoma starts from just one cell. Some lymphomas are "indolent," which means the patient can live for many years without any treatment at all. Others are very "aggressive," and among the most deadly cancers known. Just as their are many types of lymphomas, many treatment strategies have been researched.
If a person develops lymphoma, it is critical to get prompt diagnosis and proper treatment; this can literally make the difference between life and death.

Rituxan is currently indicated for relapsed or refractory low-grade or follicular, CD20+, B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). The first monoclonal antibody therapy approved in the United States for the treatment of cancer, Rituxan has been used widely and studied extensively since its approval by the federal Food and Drug Administration in 1997. [1] Today, more than 540,000 patients globally have received Rituxan, and it is part of more than 200 completed, ongoing, or planned clinical trials. [1] Rituxan has recently received approval to be administered as either a 4-dose or an 8-dose weekly regimen, to be used in patients who have previously responded to Rituxan, and in patients who have bulky tumors (>10 cm).

http://www.atdn.org/access/drugs/doxo.html
doxorubicin (Adriamycin) Drug description
Doxorubicin is used alone and in combination with other drugs for treatment of tumors including malignant lymphomas and leukemias. A new liposomal version of this drug called Doxil has been recently approvedl as a Side effects
This drug causes additive bone marrow depression in combination with other cancer treatments and radiation. It should not be given if you are pregnant or breast feeding. If there is liver impairment, dosage must be reduced, and if you have had previous radiation, your skin may be aggravated at the site. Hair loss is possible. The drug can make your urine appear red for 1-2 days. Risk of mouth inflammation is greatest 5-10 days after treatment and usually lasts 3-7 days. Dosage
Doxorubicin is given intravenously. Dose for adults is 60-75 mg/m2 once in 21 days, or 30 mg/m2 daily for 3 days every four weeks. Total cumulative dose should not exceed 550 mg/m2 without monitoring for cardiac function. How long it may take to work
The effectiveness of treatment can be seen by decrease in size or spread of malignancies in solid tumors, or improvement of hematologic status in leukemias. Managing side effects
Notify your doctor promptly if you have fever, sore throat, signs of infection, bleeding gums, bruising, blood in stools or urine, and increased fatigue. Avoid crowds and persons with known infections. Use a soft toothbrush and electric razor and avoid falls. Do not drink alcoholic beverages or take drugs containing aspirin because these can cause gastric bleeding. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water after eating and drinking. Practice contraception during treatment and for at least 4 months after therapy is concluded. Notify your doctor immediately if you have irregular heart beat, shortness of breath, or swelling of legs. Tell your doctor if you get a skin irritation at the site of previous radiation therapy. Do not receive any vaccinations without discussing with your doctor.

Burkitt's Lymphoma
Burkitt's lymphoma is a solid tumor of B lymphocytes , the lymphocytes that the immune system uses to make antibodies . The genes for making antibodies are located on chromosomes (the heavy [H] chains), (kappa light chains), and (lambda light chains). These genes are expressed only in B lymphocytes because only B cells have the necessary transcription factors for the promoters and enhancers needed to turn these antibody genes " on In most (approximately 90%) of the cases of Burkitt's lymphoma, a reciprocal translocation has moved the proto-oncogene c- myc from its normal position on chromosome to a location close to the enhancers of the antibody heavy chain genes on chromosome In all the other cases, c- myc has been translocated close to the antibody genes on chromosome 2 or 22. In every case, c- myc now finds itself in a region of vigorous gene transcription, and it may simply be the overproduction of the c-myc product (a transcription factor essential for mitosis of mammalian cells) that turns the lymphocyte cancerous. Uncontrolled mitosis of this cell results in a clone of cancer cells, Burkitt's lymphoma. Many other human cancers involve chromosome aberrations, such as translocations, at the loci of known proto-oncogenes.

Lymphoma
WHAT IS LYMPHOMA? Lymphoma is a cancer of white blood cells called B-lymphocytes.
They multiply rapidly and form tumors. Lymphoma of the brain or spinal cord is called central nervous system lymphoma.
AIDS-related lymphoma is sometimes called Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma (NHL). In 1985, the Centers for Disease Control added NHL to the list of diseases that define AIDS. Hodgkin's Disease, another type of lymphoma, is rare in people with HIV.
The longer you live with a suppressed immune system, the higher the risk of NHL. It can occur even with a high CD4 count. It can be serious and fatal, sometimes within a year.
Combination antiviral therapy cut the rates of most opportunistic infections by about 80%. At first, this did not appear to be true for NHL. However, newer studies show a decrease of about 50% in NHL rates, especially CNS lymphoma. NHL still accounts for the deaths of about 20% of people with HIV. Approximately 10% of peole with HIV may eventually develop NHL. HOW IS NHL DIAGNOSED?
