Lymphoma Survivors Network! It is very easy to find lots of technical information on the subject of Lymphoma. When you do a web "search", you will be directed to countless sites offering excellent technical information concerning the various forms of lymphoma. But, buried deep within the search pages you will also find websites written by actual lymphoma patients or survivors and their family members. These sites generally give more of the human side of the disease as survivors share their personal experience of going through the different stages of treatment. The Lymphoma Survivors Network is a resource which lists only lymphoma survivor websites. Choose list below! Hodgkin's sites non-Hodgkin's sites Submit a site © 2003 - 2005 - inspirezone.org

Lymphoma is a very common cancer in dogs and cats
Lymphoma or lymphosarcoma (abbreviated LSA) is a cancer of the lymphatic system, which includes the lymph glands (also called lymph nodes) and lymph cells scattered through other organs (liver, kidney, intestinal tract, etc.). Because lymphocytes are scattered through all organs, lymph cancer can occur in any organ. Lymphoma occurs commonly in both dogs and cats. Although most cancers occur in older animals this type of cancer can occur in young animals as well although less commonly than in the older animal. Certain breeds of dogs develop lymphoma more often than others. This tumor occurs more often in the following breeds:
  • Boxer Basset Hound Rottweiler Cocker Spaniel Saint Bernard Scottish Terrier Airedale English Bulldog Golden Retriever
There are several forms of this cancer that require different diagnostic tests and respond differently to treatment.

Antibodies and therapy
A hundred years of antibody therapy
In 1895 Hericourt and Richet described the first trials in which cancer cells were injected into animals to raise an antiserum for treating the patient. Their results seemed very promising and several patients with different types of advanced cancer were treated, each receiving an individual, tailor-made antiserum. None of them was cured, but they showed significant improvements in their symptoms. During the early 1900's many workers repeated these trials, but found inconsistent and contradictory results, leading to the conclusion in 1929 that "nothing may be hoped for at present in respect to a successful therapy from this direction". Click here to see how antibodies were predicted by Erlich 100 years ago. The problem was that the antisera were too variable, and the treatment was not reproducible and sometimes gave bad side-effects. It was discovered that an antiserum contains a mixture of many different antibodies, each one directed against a different antigen on the cancer cells. Many of these antigens are also present on normal tissue cells and so the antibodies against them could be harmful. In contrast, antisera against foreign substances like snake venom, did not have this problem and have always been very effective.
Monoclonal antibodies bring new hopes
In 1975 Kohler and Milstein found the key to aiming the "magic bullets" first envisaged 80 years earlier. Monoclonal antibodies, derived from the progeny of a single immune cell, were pure and available in potentially unlimited quantities. Since then a prodigious number of different monoclonal antibodies have been made and they have been exploited in almost every branch of biomedical research. Several have been found which recognise human cancers and some of these have been tested in clinical trials.

Lymphoma
Lymphoma Overview
Lymphoma is a group of cancers that affect the cells that play a role in the immune system, and primarily represents cells involved in the lymphatic system of the body.
  • The lymphatic system is part of the immune system. It consists of a network of vessels that carry a fluid called lymph, similar to the way that the network of blood vessels carry blood throughout the body. Lymph contains white blood cells called lymphocytes. Lymphocytes attack a variety of infectious agents as well as many cells in the precancerous stages of development.
Lymph nodes are small collections of lymph tissue that occur throughout the body. The lymphatic system involves lymphatic channels that connect thousands of lymph nodes scattered throughout the body. Lymph flows through the lymph nodes, as well as through other lymphatic tissues including the spleen, the tonsils, the bone marrow, and the thymus gland.
These lymph nodes filter the lymph, which may carry bacteria, viruses, or other microbes. The lymph nodes, or glands as they may be called, filter the lymph, which may on various occasions carry different microbial organisms. At infection sites, large numbers of these microbial organisms collect in the regional nodes and produce the swelling and tenderness typical of a localized infection. These enlarged and occasionally confluent collections of lymph nodes (so-called lymphadenopathy) are often referred to as "swollen glands."

Lymphoma (lymphatic cancer) is a disease that can effect animals as well as humans. If you perform a search on an Internet search engine you are bound to get results with animal and human resources mixed together. Although this site is devoted to human lymphoma here are links to those looking for lymphoma in animals. Please note: lymphoma is not contagious! Animals cannot transmit lymphatic cancer either to other animals or to humans (animals need not fear humans with lymphoma either). Dogs (Canine) : A very thorough question and answer approach to canine lymphoma questions is by Dr. Mike Richards, DVM at VetInfo. Another good discussion is by Anita Weidinger, DVM (updated link). VIN compares three chemotherapy protocols for lymphoma in dogs and a comparison of chemotherapy drugs comes from LSU. A 2000 study finds fish oil may help dogs with lymphoma. Dog personal experiences: Cats : There seems to be less information for cats on the web - some information again from Dr. Mike Richards, DVM

It is cancer of the lymphatic system, which is made up of thin tubes that branch like blood vessels into all parts of the body. These lymph vessels carry lymph, a colorless, watery fluid containing white blood cells called lymphocytes. Along the network of vessels are lymph nodes, groups of small bean-shaped organs that make and store infection-fighting cells. Clusters of lymph nodes are in the underarm, groin, neck and abdomen. The lymph system also includes the spleen, the thymus, and the tonsils. Because the lymph system is so extensive, lymphoma can start in many locations and spread to almost any organ or tissue. This cancer is divided into two general types Hodgkin's disease and non-Hodgkin's lymphomas  each requiring a different treatment program. At UCSF Children's Hospital, our Children's Cancer and Blood Disease Program is a leader in treating lymphoma. We provide a comprehensive approach to care that incorporates the expertise of pediatric surgeons, radiation oncologists, bone marrow experts, radiologists and pathologists. Our team also provides education and support for the families of our young patients. For more information about treatments or to make an appointment, please contact the
