Aims and Scope: Leukemia and Lymphoma
is an international journal that brings together clinical and laboratory data on lymphomas, leukemias and allied disorders including myeloma and myelodysplastic syndromes. Leukemia and Lymphoma publishes full-length papers, communications and reviews on clinical and therapeutic practice, laboratory diagnosis, pathology, cytology, ultrastructure, cytogenetics and cellular and molecular immunology; the journal aims at a strong clinical-pathologic correlation. Interesting or unusual case reports of importance are also included. In addition, an update is provided on the basic issues and advances in molecular genetics as applied to this field. The journal will provide an important reference source for physicians and scientists who deal essentially with the clinical and laboratory diagnosis, clinical care and therapy of patients with these disorders.

What is Genetic Toxicology?
  • Genetic toxicology is the study of chemicals and other agents which damage genes and which are likely to cause cancer and other mutations. Because various cancers possess heritable changes to cells, mutations have long been believed to be the leading cause of these diseases. Detection of mutagens, therefore, is a fast means of identifying potential carcinogens in our environment. However, mutations come in various types, ranging from single nucleotide changes in the DNA up to whole chromosome alterations.
To date, the only mutagen detection system capable of detecting almost this entire spectrum of genetic damage is the mouse lymphoma assay, which will be described in detail in this essay.
My Qualifications:
  • I have been active as a Genetic Toxicologist for over 25 years, collaborating with numerous talented colleagues in the field during this period. For the last 20 of those years, I headed the Genetic Toxicology laboratory at Burroughs Wellcome Co. where I was actively encouraged to pursue my basic research activities. Success in this was due largely to working with a highly motivated technical staff. For a more complete resume and publications, click

... Treatment Decision Tools Detailed Guide: Lymphoma, Non-Hodgkin's type What Is Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma? Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma or NHL) is a cancer of lymphoid tissue, a part of the lymphatic system. It is sometimes just called lymphoma. The major tissue in the lymphatic system is the lymph node. Lymph nodes make and store lymphocytes, the white blood cells responsible for immunity or your defense against infections or other foreign invaders. They are connected throughout the body by narrow tubes similar to blood vessels called lymph vessels. These lymph vessels carry a colorless, watery fluid (lymphatic fluid) that contains lymphocytes. Eventually the lymphatic fluid is emptied into a major blood vessel in the left upper chest. There are 2 main types of lymphomas. Hodgkin lymphoma (also known as Hodgkin's lymphoma, Hodgkin disease, or Hodgkin's disease) is named after Dr. Thomas Hodgkin, who first described it as a new disease in 1832. All other types of lymphoma are called non-Hodgkin lymphomas. These 2 types of lymphoma can usually be distinguished from each other by examining the cancerous tissue under a microscope. In some cases, more tests to identify specific chemical components of the lymphoma cells may be needed.

Scientists at Bath Cancer Research undertake ex vivo drug sensitivity studies using the TRAC assay (Tumour Response to Anti-neoplastic Compounds, a development of the DiSC assay [Ref 10 of Selected Publications ]). With this we assess the cytotoxic drug sensitivity of fresh human cells from patients with leukaemia and lymphoma. Our greatest expertise is with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL), acute myeloid leukaemia (AML or ANLL), non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) and similar diseases. Service
Bath Cancer Research provides consultant haematologists/ oncologists an international service for the diseases above. Cells from their patients are tested for ex vivo drug response to a panel of cytotoxic drugs (up to 25 drugs). A report is sent to the physician to aid choice of optimum therapy. This information helps maximise the likelihood of response (and therefore survival) and reduces the risk of causing patient toxicity with no clinical benefit. Some assays are chargeable. For those interested in assays for solid tumours or tests in the USA, please see links at the bottom of this page.

Article date: Lymphoid tissue is formed by several types of immune system cells that work together to resist infections. Lymphoid tissue also reacts to transplanted tissues (such as blood transfusions or organ transplants) from other people and is involved in fighting some types of cancer. This lymphoid tissue is found in many places throughout the body, including lymph nodes, the thymus (found behind the chest bone and in front of the heart), the spleen (on the left side of the abdomen next to the stomach), the tonsils and adenoids, in the bone marrow, and scattered within other systems such as the digestive and respiratory systems. Treatment of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma
The treatment options for patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma depend on the grade and stage of the lymphoma. The grade of a NHL reflects how rapidly it is likely to grow, and is determined by examination of a tissue sample under the microscope. But, there are some situations in which the specific type of lymphoma or part of the body affected is the most important factor in selection of treatment. Of course, no two patients are exactly alike and standard options are often tailored to each patient's unique situation. It is important to understand all treatment options. It is often a good idea to seek a second opinion since it can provide additional information and help the patient feel more confident about the treatment plan that is chosen.

Lymphoma
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Lymphoma is a general term for malignancies of lymphocytes or, more rarely, of histiocytes . Collectively, these cell types form the reticuloendothelial system and circulate in the vessels of the lymphatic system . Traditionally, Lymphoma is classified as Hodgkin's disease , discovered by Thomas Hodgkin in , and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (all other types of lymphoma). Modern classifications of lymphoma have moved away from this artificial division. edit
Classification
The Working Formulation , published in 1982, is primarily descriptive but remains the most widely used classification of non-Hodgkin lymphoma today.
  • Low Grade
    • Malignant Lymphoma, small lymphocytic (chronic lymphocytic leukemia) Malignant Lymphoma, follicular, predominantly small cleaved cell Malignant Lymphoma, follicular, mixed (small cleaved and large cell)

Study shows link between pesticides and lymphoma
ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) A newly published study has found that children exposed to pesticides in the home may be three to seven times more likely to develop non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), compared to unexposed children. The authors of the report in the December 1 issue of the journal Cancer caution that the number of children in the study was small, and that more research with larger groups is needed.

Drug combination improves lymphoma survival rates
LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) A combination drug therapy looks to be the first new treatment in 20 years for patients with a deadly form of lymphoma, researchers said Sunday. Conventional chemotherapy combined with Rituxan, a cloned antibody, significantly improves survival chances for patients with the aggressive form of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, according to study results presented in San Francisco at a meeting of the American Society of Hematology.

Like other cancers, lymphomas, occur when cells divide too much and too fast. Growth control is lost, and the lymphatic cells may overcrowd, invade, and destroy lymphoid tissues and metastasize (spread) to other organs. There are two general types of lymphomas: "Hodgkin's Disease" (named after Dr. Thomas Hodgkin, who first recognized it in 1832) and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The lymphatic tissue in Hodgkin's disease contains specific cells - Reed-Sternberg cells - that are not found in any other cancerous lymphomas or cancers. These cells distinguish Hodgkin's disease (HD) from non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHLs). Anatomy The lymphatic system - the target of lymphomas - includes the lymph nodes and other organs that make up the immune and blood-forming (hematopoietic) elements of the body.

This site aims to provide resources on Burkitt's Lymphoma, a very rare form of cancer with about only 300 new cases a year in the United States. Burkitt's Lymphoma, rare in most of the world, is the most common childhood cancer in Central Africa, and is one of the most aggressive of all human cancers. Burkitt's lymphoma is one type of a group of malignant diseases know as the Non-Hodgkin's Lymphomas (NHL). These lymphomas are very similar to the leukemias. The type of malignant cell present is called a B-cell and Burkitt's is often referred to as a B-cell lymphoma or leukemia. As with other cancers, the exact cause is not known. Burkitt's is the most common in children in Africa and there is some evidence linking its cause there to a virus known as the Epstein-Barr virus. Outside of Africa, chromosomal defects in some of the patient's cells may be the cause. Children still seem to be the most affected, but there are cases of adults with Burkitt's. This malignancy grows very rapidly and a person who appeared in good health a month or 6 weeks ago may now be critically ill.

Approximately two years prior to his lymphoma, he experienced renal failure, which continued in a "mild" form for him (for the most part), and was well-controlled by diet and medication. Although his renal disease was not severe, I joined the online list for feline chronic renal failure caregivers (see the CRF web site link, below – the group can be accessed through the Feline CRF Web site’s home page). It was lucky for me that I did, too, because they were very supportive when I first discovered Woodrow’s lump, and someone on the list put me in touch with the ONELIST feline lymphoma group (this also can be accessed through the links listed below). I will discuss Woodrow's diagnosis for lymphoma; the background work I performed while waiting for his diagnosis; the treatment protocol used in Woodrow's care; and Woodrow's particular response to his treatment. I also include (in the "Links" section) some of the most useful Internet sites available at the time I was researching Woodrow's illness. To Learn More About This Topic: Chat with Us Email Us Lymphoma is a general term for cancers of the lymphatic system - an important part of the body’s immune system that fights disease and infection. About five percent of all cancers in the United States are lymphomas. There are two types of lymphoma: Hodgkin’s disease is one of these two types. All other types of lymphomas are considered non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL), and will be discussed here. According to the National Cancer Institute, since 1973 the incidence of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in the United States has increased about seventy-five percent—one of the largest increases among major cancer sites. NCI has estimated that about 1 in 52 men and 1 in 61 women in the United States will be diagnosed with NHL during their lifetime. Part of the increase in NHL incidence in recent years is a result of the AIDS epidemic: NHL is sixty times more common among AIDS patients than in the general U.S. population. Herbicides and insecticides have been linked to risk for NHL in studies of farmers, pesticide applicators, and other occupational groups exposed to high levels of these chemicals. An NCI study found that contamination of drinking water with nitrate, a chemical found in fertilizers, may also be associated with an increased risk of NHL, particularly in agricultural areas.
