What is lymphedema?
Maybe, when you happened to land incidentally on this page, you wonder what lymphedema is? Imagine that you'd look like this: Then one day all your lymph nodes were removed
and there is a great chance that you wind up looking like this: Or worse. But in that case your blood vessels would have collapsed and you wouldn't be around anyway.
The chance that you'll get lymphedema may be larger than you think. For instance, you have a great chance to get stuck with lymphedema when you get cancer. During a cancer operation lymph nodes are taken away. The nodes are investigated to see if the cancer has not spread.

Welcome
This website is a support and resource site for people with the condition known as lymphedema. Lymphedema is an accumulation of lymphatic fluid in the body's tissues which causing swelling. This swelling is most often in the arms and/or legs, but occasionally occurs in other parts of the body. The effects of lymphedema can vary from very mild complications to extremely painful and disabling disfugurement. In addition, those with the lymphedema are often susceptible to serious life-threatening infections. The main focus of this site is the "questionnaire". Visitors fill out the questionnaire form that asks for information about their health insurance company, and any lymphedema clinics that they may have visited. When they submit the form, the information they provide goes into a database. Anyone can then search this database to read the ratings and opinions of others on the various hospitals, clinics and therapists that have been recorded. The theory is that over time, we will slowly build up a consensus on what insurance companies are providing coverage for lymphedema, and which clinics have a good reputation among their patients. This information can be then be used by others in making decisions about what companies or caregivers to patronize.

Supporting Cancer Patients Financial and Legal Matters Staying Active During Treatment Symptoms and Side Effects ... Glossary Understanding Lymphedema (For Cancers Other Than Breast Cancer) What Is the Lymph System? Our bodies have a network of lymph nodes and lymph vessels that carry and remove lymph fluid the same way blood vessels circulate blood to all parts of the body. Lymph fluid has white blood cells, which help us fight infections. Within the lymph vessels, there are valves and muscles that help move the fluid through the body. Lymph nodes serve as filters for harmful substances and help us fight infection. What is Lymphedema? Lymphedema is the build up of lymph fluid in the tissues that results in swelling usually of the arms or legs. Primary lymphedema can develop because lymph nodes or vessels are missing or are not working the way they should. This type of lymphedema is not common.

Lymphedema Format for Printing Lymphedema is the chronic swelling or feeling of tightness in the arm or hand due to an accumulation of lymphatic fluid in the soft tissue of the arm. The condition occurs when lymph vessels, which normally carry excess fluid out of the limbs and back into central circulation, have had their flow interrupted. Axillary (underarm) lymph node removal is commonly performed on breast cancer patients to stage or treat their cancer. However, between 15% and 20% of breast cancer patients who undergo axillary lymph node removal develop lymphedema. According to the American Cancer Society, of the two million breast cancer survivors in the U.S., approximately 400,000 must cope with lymphedema on a daily basis. Main Menu: Lymphedema After Breast Cancer Surgery When breast cancer cells begin to escape from the primary tumor site in the breast, they often first travel to the lymph nodes under the upper arm. Therefore, it is often necessary to remove some or all of the axillary lymph nodes during breast cancer surgery (

Lymphedema Alert Bracelets Help Breast Cancer Survivors Who Had Lymph Nodes Removed (dateline October 3, 2000) Format for Printing Courtesy NLN With the help of the National Lymphedema Network (NLN), Karin Douglas, a breast cancer survivor and lymphedema activist, has created a Lymphedema Alert bracelet and necklace to protect breast cancer survivors from receiving treatment on their affected arm. Lymphedema (chronic swelling) of the arm is a side effect of breast cancer surgery, particularly if some of all of the axillary (underarm) lymph nodes were removed. The Lymphedema Alert bracelet is made of non-allergic stainless steel with a link chain that stretches over the wrist. The bracelet contains the words, "No Blood Pressure – No Needles in this Arm" to alert a healthcare professional of the patient’s risk of lymphedema. According to the National Lymphedema Network, the Lymphedema Alert bracelet helps breast cancer survivors increase their chances of remaining lymphedema-free or keep their existing lymphedema under control. The bracelets also help educate the community about the seriousness of lymphedema. Lymphedema of the arm is the chronic swelling or feeling of tightness around the arm or hand caused by the accumulation of lymphatic fluid in spaces between arm tissue. During

We have had several questions recently about edema of the lower extremities in patients with congestive heart failure. Lymphedema causes swelling of the affected extremity; however, not all swollen extremities are caused by lymphedema. In congestive heart failure the heart does not work as well as it should. Think of the heart as a pump with an inlet and an outlet. When a pump does not work as well as it should, the amount of fluid pumped out by the pump is decreased. In addition to this, the amount of fluid that the pump is trying to remove remains high. Congestive heart failure is very similar. In congestive heart failure, the amount of blood pumped out by the heart is less than normal, decreasing the total amount of oxygen available to the tissues. Patients with congestive heart failure become easily fatigued because the heart cannot pump enough blood to satisfy the oxygen requirements during periods of exercise. Since the output from the heart is low, the input into the heart from the veins is also diminished and blood builds up behind the heart much like water builds up behind a dam.

Have you noticed women with an oversized arm? Or perhaps you have noticed someone wearing what looks like an Ace bandage from their hand to their shoulder. That person is most likely suffering from lymphedema, a severely underaddressed issue relevant to women's health. It is an "orphan disease" with no specialists. And the Ace bandage is not what it appears. An Ace bandage is very elastic, while the lymphedema bandaging has very little stretch in it, but acts like a cast. When the muscle pushes, the bandage holds the skin in place, so that the tissue is squeezed and wrung out, like a sponge. Lymphedema is a chronic swelling, due to inadequate lymph drainage. You are at risk for developing lymphedema if you have had lymph nodes removed and/or radiation treatment following breast cancer. Lymphedema is not just an issue for women who have had breast cancer surgery, it is also seen in all kinds of pelvic tumors in both men and women. The number of men who suffer with lymphedema in the legs is high. It is also becoming apparent that plastic surgery patients, who have had liposuction, are at risk from the disturbance in the lymph tissue following the intrusion of the cannula. Poor circulation of lymph and localized fluid retention may be caused by a sedentary lifestyle or activities which involve prolonged periods of standing, causing swelling in the feet and ankles. In North America, the most serious forms of lymphedema most often result from lymph node removal or damage to the channels from radiation during cancer treatment. Primary lymphedema can be caused by a congenital deficiency of the lymphatics. Filariasis, a parasitic disease, is a major cause of lymphedema world-wide, but is rarely seen in temperate climates.
