Lyme Disease
Lyme Disease Overview
Lyme disease, sometimes referred to as Lyme infection, is a bacterial illness, transmitted to humans by the bite of deer ticks ( Ixodes ticks) carrying a bacterium known as Borrelia burgdorferi . The disease has been reported in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, North Central, and Pacific coastal regions of the United States and in Europe, where it was first described almost 100 years ago. It is most prevalent in the northeastern states of the United States, with about half of all cases clustered in New York and Connecticut. Doctors at New Haven's Yale Medical Center first described and named Lyme disease in the United States in the late 1970s. An unexpected number of residents in Lyme, Connecticut, were found to have a "new" and unusual illness.
  • Fortunately, less than 5% of tick bites in high-contact areas result in Lyme infections. Doctors have learned a great deal about the illness since that original cluster of people was observed. Treatments are available for Lyme disease (see Medications and Prevention

Lyme Disease
Medical Author: William C. Shiel Jr., MD, FACP, FACR What is Lyme disease?
Lyme disease is a bacterial illness caused by a bacterium called a "spirochete." The actual name of the bacterium is Borrelia burgdorferi. Lyme disease is spread by ticks when they bite the skin permitting the bacterium to infect the body. Lyme disease can cause abnormalities in the skin, joints, heart and nervous system.

Laurie Gaulke holds onto Max, the family dog as she and her six-year-old son Graham watch the installation of a new tick-killing system in the backyard of their home. Gaulke's husband got Lyme disease three summers ago.
TRENTON, N.J. - After her husband got Lyme disease, her young son kept getting tick bites in their yard and a close friend nearly died of the tick-borne infection, Laurie Gaulke felt she had to do something. With heavy brush and a forest with deer behind her home in Gillette, Gaulke tried a new strategy three years ago: installing a tick-killing system in the brush fringing her yard. Bait inside the plastic boxes lures rodents that harbor the bacteria causing Lyme disease. A wick coats their fur with a chemical that kills ticks for up to six weeks. New boxes must be installed by trained pest control contractors each spring and summer. Developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Maxforce Tick Management System is one of a few new alternatives to widespread chemical spraying to kill ticks and prevent Lyme disease, which can cause long-term health problems and cost thousands of dollars to cure.

lyme disease may affect the brain in many ways, the most common of which is a Typical Symptoms among patients with neuropsychiatric lyme disease
http://www.columbia-lyme.org/flatp/lymeoverview.html
Overview of Neuropsychiatric
Lyme Disease
Lyme disease may affect the brain in many ways, the most common of which is a disturbance in thinking (cognition). Other symptoms that occur frequently include headache, mood swings, irritability, depression, and marked fatigue. This section will describe some of the typical and less typical features of neuropsychiatric Lyme disease in adults. Lyme Disease is transmitted by an Ixodes tick infected with Borrelia burgdorferi. Borrelia burgdorferi Ixodes Scapularis Tick The spirochete which causes Lyme disease (Borrelia burgdorferi) can invade the central nervous system within days to a week of initial skin infection, as a result of dissemination through the blood stream. The majority of patients who are treated early with antibiotics do well and incur no long term problems. Patients who are not treated until later in the illness may have a more complicated course. While the symptoms often seen among patients with neuropsychiatric Lyme Disease are not specific to Lyme Disease and can also be found in other disorders, knowing the typical clusters of symptoms can be helpful when considering Lyme Disease as a possible diagnosis. The more multi-systemic the symptom presentation and the more clinical features observed in a patient from the list below, the more strongly Lyme disease should be considered. Other diagnostic possibilities need to be considered in the differential diagnosis, such as mood or anxiety disorders, collagen vascular or autoimmune diseases, spinal cord compression, multiple sclerosis, metastatic diseases, endocrinological disorders, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and residual damage from past brain trauma or toxin exposure.

Borrelia burgdorferi the spirochete that causes Lyme Disease. FA stain (CDC) Introduction Lyme disease was first recognized in the United States in 1975 by Dr. Allen Steere, following a mysterious outbreak of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis near the community of Lyme, Connecticut. The rural location of the Lyme outbreak and the onset of illness during summer and early fall suggested that the transmission of the disease was by an arthropod vector. In 1982, the etiologic agent of Lyme disease was discovered by Willy Burgdorfer who isolated spirochetes belonging to the genus Borrelia from the mid-guts of Ixodes ticks. He showed that these spirochetes reacted with immune serum from patients that had been diagnosed with Lyme disease. Subsequently, the etiologic agent was given the name Borrelia burgdorferi. Since then, reports of Lyme disease have increased dramatically to the point that the disease has become an important public health problem in some areas of the United States. Today Lyme disease is the most prevalent tick-borne illness in the US. Lyme disease has been reported in 49 states and on four different continents. In 2002, there were 23,763 new cases reported in the U.S. Between 1996 and 2001 the number was level at about 17,000 new cases per year, but increased by nearly 7,000 cases in 2002. See Figure 1 below from the CDC. Biology of Borrelia burgdorferi Borrelia burgdorferi , like the human pathogen Treponema pallidum

Founded in New York in the 1960s, The Heimlich Institute moved to Cincinnati 30 years ago. Now located on the campus of Deaconess Hospital in Cincinnati, the Institute continues to conduct scientific, cultural and social research into issues of importance to the medical and scientific community, as well as addressing social concerns in the United States and abroad. Henry J. Heimlich , M.D., president, is best known for the lifesaving Heimlich Maneuver, for which he won the Lasker Award in 1984. But the technique is just part of the work of the institute that bears his name. Through The Heimlich Institute, Dr. Heimlich is researching new treatments for AIDS and cancer, and teaching the expanded use of the Heimlich Maneuver to save drowning victims, asthma sufferers and cystic fibrosis patients. Dr. Heimlich also works to promote peaceful solutions to international problems through the "A Caring World" program. The Institute places emphasis on using the creative portion of our minds in medicine and life. Each person creates within the limits of his or her knowledge and capability. With this creativity comes challenge, frustration and controversy. Dr. Heimlich's favorite phrase is: "If all of your peers understand what you have done, you are not creative," but when ideas are proven successful, in spite of attempts to interfere, inevitably truth prevails, and the joys and rewards of one's work are insurmountable.

    New Vaccine Targets Lyme Disease
New Hope for Diminishing 'Great Masquerader'
by Carol Lewis Don C.'s hands hurt for months. He kept getting sore throats. When he turned his head to either side, it was painful to move it back. He suffered from a lack of concentration, memory loss, aching joints, and depression. Yet, the then-41-year-old New Jersey native just assumed it was all part of getting older. As symptoms worsened, Don became concerned that he was suffering from far more than the effects of middle age. A diagnostic questionnaire and extensive testing eventually confirmed that he had Lyme disease. In December 1998, the Food and Drug Administration licensed the first vaccine to help prevent Lyme disease, a bacterial infection transmitted by tick bites. LYMErix, distributed by SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals, Philadelphia, is an unusual vaccine. Like most vaccines, it stimulates the human immune system to produce antibodies, in this case directed against
