HIV and HIV Medication: Complaints, Side Effects, and Possible Treatments
Oversensitivity
Treatments with HIV medications and cotrimoxazol, are often accompanied by oversensitivity [Carr-A, Moyle G] which expresses itself in the form of a skin rash characterized by red spots, bumps, and an itchy feeling, that may or may not be associated with fever. The rash appears primarily on the arms and legs and begins mostly between one and three weeks after commencement with HIV medication. Occasionally much more severe skin disorders can occur, such as hives, sensitivity to light, abnormal skin pigmentation, Lyell's Syndrome, also know as toxic epidermal necrolysis (fever, red skin, and blister-forming), lupus erythematodes (a skin inflammation with flaking or peeling) and the Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (red inflamed skin with general malaise and joint complaints). The NNRTI's delavirdine, efavirenz and nevirapine and the NRTI abacavir can often lead to oversensitivity. As for other NRTI's or the HIV inhibitors is that seldom the case.

Carbamazepine Brand name (Epitol and Tegretol)
Pharmacology
Anticonvulsant - Trigeminal Neuralgia Therapy - Antimanic Carbamazepine has anticonvulsant properties which have been found useful in the treatment of psychomotor epilepsy and as an adjunct in the treatment of partial epilepsies, when administered in conjunction with other anticonvulsant drugs to prevent the possible generalization of the epileptic discharge. A mild psychotropic effect has been observed in some patients, which seems related to the effect of the carbamazepine in psychomotor or temporal lobe epilepsy.

If you do develop side effects it is vitally important that you speak to your doctor before you stop taking your pills. Remember that this list of side effects isn’t complete - you can develop virtually any side effect with virtually any drug - and remember too that some of these side effects are quite uncommon and many patients can take a drug without getting any side effects. Always follow your doctor’s advice about how and when to take a drug - and if you are in any doubt at all then ask for a second opinion. The fact that one drug may be accompanied by a long list of possible side effects does not mean that it is necessarily more or less dangerous or more or less likely to produce problems than a drug which has a shorter list of possible side effects.

Polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMNL) chemotaxis was evaluated in ten healthy volunteers who had received 600 mg of clindamycin intramuscularly. Serum obtained 3 hours after the administration of clindamycin significantly increased PMNL chemotaxis. Serum obtained at 12 and 24 hours after the administration of the drug did not induce significant increase in PMNL chemotaxis. The administration of clindamycin had no direct effect on the PMNLs in terms of their chemotactic activity. These results demonstrate serum-associated augmentation of PMNL chemotaxis by clindamycin in vivo which may be of potential clinical benefit in the outcome of infections.

Russia: Often-lethal violence against those investigating corruption has raised little concern in government circles. By Seamus Martin
The writers' village of Peredelkino is just 12 miles from Red Square and almost surrounded by the grim high-rise apartment blocks in which most of Moscow's inhabitants live. A quirk of the topography, though, gives an enchanting effect. Stands of pine, fir and silver birch are astutely planted around a natural dip in the landscape. The ugly buildings are shielded from view. The overall impression is of being in the heart of the Russian countryside. Peredelkino is a peaceful place, particularly at this time of year when the snow lies thick on the ground. It was here that the Nobel laureate Boris Pasternak, author of Doctor Zhivago, lived and died. He is buried in the little graveyard in the shadow of the golden domes of the parish church. Not long ago another writer was laid to rest here.

Introduction Aspirin or acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) is still one of the most widely sold drugs in the world and its side effects are well known. Among these, hypersensitivity reactions represent one of the most frequently described since the first report of urticaria and angio-oedema by Hirshberg in 1902.

    PRINCIPLE OF THE TEST.
Skin is the largest organ in the human body, by volume or by weight. Skin is the organ most exposed to noxious environmental and infectious influences. Skin is also the organ most accessible for biopsy, and therefore numerous pathologic lesions have been described and followed in clinicopathologic investigations. Herein are only a few highlights of this fascinating field of study.

Causes of Necrotic Wounds other than Brown Recluse Spider Bites
by Rick Vetter , M.S. updated October 2004 Throughout the United States, spiders get blamed as the cause of many dermatological wounds in medical diagnoses. In virtually every case, NO spider is seen nor felt inflicting a bite, nor is the alleged spider collected in the incident. “Potential spider bite” diagnoses are made solely on the symptoms of the lesion. In the case of necrotic wounds, “brown recluse spider bite” is a very common conclusion of medical personnel throughout North America including such ludicrously inhospitable places as Canada and Alaska where no brown recluses have ever been found. This is in spite of the fact that the brown recluse spider ( Loxosceles reclusa ) is native only to the South and central midwestern states (circumscribed by southeastern Nebraska south to Texas, east to Georgia/westernmost tip of South Carolina and southernmost Ohio with additional rare finds being made beyond this area). In addition there are several related species that exist in the southwestern U.S. deserts from Texas to California; however, they do not inhabit the coastal California regions where most of the human population is concentrated.
