Monica's Lupus Story
Living with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
T his site began as a story of Monica's fight against Lupus. Monica is fifty five years old, we have been together for twenty six years and she has suffered with S.L.E for about thirty years. I hoped that a tribute to a very brave lady would send a positive message to other sufferers, some of whom may be just embarking on their long Lupus journey. The site is over 5 years old now and "by popular demand" I have expanded on what began as brief overviews of lupus symptoms, treatment and care into relatively detailed pages. However the site remains a dedication to Monica. She has had some horrible times. Lately 2003 was marred by her having to wait for her latest hip replacement and at the end of the year she's recovering from it having been performed in December, but after eight of them who's counting?. At the time of this update she has recovered from that and we are looking forward to our first holiday for some time. She always bounces back from everything this horrible condition throws at her and for that I love her very much. I have tried to make the links of the site as simple as possible. "About Lupus" will lead you to further pages about Lupus, Diagnosis, Treatment, Taking Care issues and lately I've been adding all the Associated Conditions I could think of! "Monica's Lupus" leads you to Monica's personal pages, which include our Good and Bad Times, our view of the Future, her Operations and Our Travels. In addition to lots of other pages I've recently added a group of pages of UK Information, We've updated this lately and it's well worth a look!

What is Lupus?
Lupus is an autoimmune disorder where the immune system loses its ability to tell the difference between foreign substances (antigens) and its own cells and tissues. Because of the inability of the immune system to distinguish between foreign substances and its own cells, the immune system makes antibodies directed against healthy tissues and cells in the body. The immune complexes build up in the tissues and can cause inflammation, injury to tissues, and pain For most people, lupus is a mild disease affecting only a few organs. For others, it may cause serious and even life-threatening problems. Lupus can affect various parts of the body, especially the skin, joints, blood, lungs heart , and kidneys Lupus tends to have unpredictable flares, called exacerbations, and improvements. It is not easy to predict when it will flare up or get better. Flares tend to follow infection, end of pregnancy, and other stressful events. Lupus is not a form of cancer , and you cannot "catch" it from another person. According to the

Description
The wolf is the primeval wild dog, long a hunter alongside people, ancestor of our most faithful domestic companion. Wolves vary widely in appearance, from lightly built and often white in the Arctic to larger, and mostly dark in more southerly areas.
History
Wolves arose in the middle of the great Ice Age about one million years ago from a lineage of smaller doglike forms native to Eurasia. They spread to North America across the Bering land bridge early in the Ice Age when it was bared by falling sea level, and renewed contact with the American population each time the bridge re-emerged. As a result, Asian and American populations have not evolved separately for long enough to become distinct species.
Range
Today wolves are distributed across the northern portion of both continents and more sporadically to the southward. They can be found throughout Beringian except for many islands. Six thousand individuals have been estimated to inhabit Alaska at densities varying from 39 individuals per 1,000 square kilometers in richer, more southerly habitats, to six per 1,000 square kilometers in coastal and northern tundra. A study of wolves in the remote Anadyr highlands of Russian Beringia determined an intermediate density: about ten wolves per 1,000 square kilometers.
Habitat
Wolves once occupied a vast array of habitats well into the temperate and even subtropical and desert areas. Now, however, they are generally rare or absent except in northern forests and arctic tundra.

  • Lupus means "wolf" in Latin.
  • Back in 1851, physicians thought the location of the facial rash that commonly appears with lupus looked like the bite from a wolf.
  • Lupus is divided into 3 main categories :
    1. Discoid lupus erythematosus
    2. Systemic lupus erythematosus
    3. Drug-induced systemic lupus erythematosus
  • Erythematosus means "redness" in Greek. ( Audio pronunication
  • Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease. An autoimmune disease is the result of the body's protective immune system producing antibodies to attack its own healthy cells and tissues. This is because the system is unable to differentiate between friend or invader and it can affect almost every part of the body including organs.
Rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, vasculitis and juvenile-onset diabetes are other examples of autoimmune diseases.
  • Though SLE can affect men and women of any race or age, women of African, Asian or Native American descent and are between the ages of 14 to 45 years old are more prone to it.

Originally published Lupus Canada Bulletin , Volume 4 No. 1, Spring 1994

It has long been known that exposure to sunlight or artificial ultraviolet (UV) light can worsen the skin lesions of lupus in some people. Experiments with ultraviolet A and B light have showed that both parts of the UV spectrum can affect lesions adversely. Approximately 70% of patients with subacute cutaneous lupus (SCLE), 40-60% of patients with discoid lupus (DLE) and 10% of patients with systemic lupus (SLE) are made worse by sunlight or UV light. UV light can cause both local and systemic immune alterations, and some patients find that their systemic symptoms become worse after UV light exposure. Light skinned patients are generally more sensitive to UV light, but even blacks with lupus can be made worse by UV light.

Hello my name is Vanessa. I am twelve years old. I have Morphea and Lupus.
When I was eight years old my mom noticed that I had two little bumps on my cheeks. My mom thought they were just mosquito bites. Only one went away and the other one on my right cheek did not go away. My mom took me to see the doctor. The doctor gave me some ointment to put on my face, but it still didn't go away. My mom took me back about two months later to my doctor. My doctor then sent me to a Dermatologist.
The Dermatologist decided to do a biopsy on my cheek. About a month later the Dermatologist diagnosed me with Discoid Lupus at the age of nine years old.
The Dermatologist told me that I could not really be in the sun. I could but I would have to wear a lot of sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses.
I'm not sure why my Dermatologist sent me to see a Pediatric Rheumatologist at Children's Hospital in Los Angeles.
My Pediatric Rheumatologist seen a mark on my left thigh that looked like a bruise. But this bruise wouldn't go away and it didn't hurt. After the Pediatric Rheumatologist looked at my thigh he told my mom I had Morphea.

Lupus (also called systemic lupus erythematosus ) is a disorder of the immune system. Normally, the immune system protects the body against invading infections and cancers. In lupus, the immune system is over-active and produces increased amounts of abnormal antibodies that attack the body's tissues and organs. Lupus can affect many parts of the body, including the joints, skin, kidneys, lungs, heart, nervous system, and blood vessels. The signs and symptoms of lupus differ from person to person; the disease can range from mild to life threatening.
