82. Life With Lupus
Some people have an autoimmune disorder called lupus. Find out more in thisarticle for kids.
http://kidshealth.org/kid/health_problems/bone/life_with_lupus.html
KidsHealth Kids Kids' Health Problems
Your body has its own system for fighting off sickness called the immune system , but sometimes this system doesn't work correctly. When this happens, a person may have an autoimmune (say: aw-toh-im- yoon ) disease. Lupus (say: loo -pus) is one of those diseases. A healthy immune system is like an army that can protect you against germs and illness. It makes antibodies (say: an -tye- bah -deez), which are special chemicals that fight off infections. But with a disease like lupus, the army gets confused and begins attacking the healthy cells in your body. It does this by making autoantibodies (say: aw -toh- an -tye- bah -deez), which are antibodies that attack the body's normal cells. People with lupus may not look sick, but they may feel run down, weak, or nauseated. Their joints may hurt and they may have swollen glands. There are three types of lupus: Systemic lupus erythematosus (say: sis- teh -mik loo -pus er-uh-thee-muh- toh -sus) is also called SLE and is the type that most people mean when they talk about lupus. It's the most serious form of lupus. SLE can affect the skin , joints, tendons, and other body organs like the brain heart lungs , and kidneys Discoid lupus (say: dis -koyd loo -pus) is a skin disease that causes a rash on the face, neck, scalp, and ears. It's a much rarer form of lupus than SLE. It doesn't affect other organs the way SLE can, but the rash can leave scars.

The reason for the Foundation is simple: To raise public awareness of the disease lupus Howie started this non-profit organization shortly after his sister, Caroline, succumbed to the disease in 1998. Howie's wish is to have one less family go through what he and his family and other families have gone through. All monies raised by the Foundation will be donated for lupus research, education and financial assistance for individuals living with lupus who cannot afford treatment.

T he Lupus Foundation of Colorado Web site is created to provide you with the latest and most up to date information about Lupus. Whether you are newly diagnosed with Lupus, a longtime family member or friend, or a member of the medical community, this Web site will provide you with a better understanding of Lupus and tools to manage Lupus more effectively. Our programs and supportive services are designed to increase awareness and improve the quality of life for people living with Lupus through education, community outreach services, and support of research that will lead to effective treatment and cure for the disease. Lupus is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease that is difficult to diagnose, difficult to manage and, to date, without cure. For most people, Lupus is a mild disease affecting only a few body organs; for others, it may cause serious and even life threatening problems. Current statistics indicate that Lupus affects adult women approximately 10 times more frequently than men. Children are also affected by Lupus. Even though Lupus is more prevalent in this country than AIDS, sickle cell anemia, cerebral palsy and cystic fibrosis, it is the least known of all major diseases. Christian Lupus
(WOLF) Historian, b. at Ypres (Flanders), 23 July, 1612; d. at Louvain, 10 July, 1681. He joined the Augustinian Order at the age of fifteen, and on the completion of his studies, was appointed lecturer in theology, to the younger members of the order at Cologne. While occupying this position he won the confidence of the nuncio, Fabio Chigi, afterwards Alexander VII . In 1640 Lupus was appointed professor of theology at Louvain, but, owing to his zeal for the teaching of St. Augustine , was suspected of Jansenism . The nuncio at Brussels accused him of it, and would not permit the University of Louvain to confer a doctor's degree upon him; only after the pope's mediation was it given to him. When the accusation was renewed, Alexander VII called him to Rome, where for the next five years he devoted himself under papal protection to the study of ecclesiastical history. He returned to Louvain in 1660, and was elected provincial of the Belgian province; in 1667 he returned to Rome, accompanied by several professors of the theological faculty of Louvain, to obtain the censure of a number of erroneous moral doctrines. Innocent XI condemned sixty-five of the propositions denounced by him. On his return to Louvain he was appointed regius professor of theology, the first time a religious had ever held this office. His writings were published in thirteen parts, the first twelve at Venice, 1724-1729, in six folio volumes, the thirteenth at Bologna, in 1742. The first six under the title "Synodorum generalium et provincialium statuta et canones cum notis et historicis dissertationibus" (1665-1673) contain a detailed history of the councils, with many learned dissertations. The seventh part contains: "Ad Ephesinum concilium variorum patrum epistolas, item commonitorium Coelestini papae, titulos decretorum Hilarii papae" (Louvain, 1682). He also wrote critical replies to Quesnel

Source: Lupus Foundation of America, Inc., Lupus Fact Sheet Lupus is a chronic, autoimmune disease which causes inflammation of various parts of the body, especially the skin, joints, blood, and kidneys. The immune system normally protects the body against viruses, bacteria and other foreign materials. In an autoimmune disease like lupus, the immune system loses its ability to tell the difference between foreign substances and its own cells and tissues. The immune system then makes antibodies directed against "self." Lupus is NOT infectious, rare or cancerous. The Lupus Foundation of America market research data show that between 1.4 million and 2 million people have been diagnosed with lupus. (Study conducted by Bruskin/Goldring Research, 1994.) Although the cause of lupus is unknown, scientists suspect that individuals are genetically predisposed to lupus, and know that environmental factors such as infections, antibiotics, ultraviolet light, extreme stress and certain drugs play a critical role in triggering lupus.

Spain's Bears don't cry Wolf
an interview with Juan Carlos Blanco
Spain’s wilderness still provides a refuge for large predators such as the Brown bear and the wolf, species which have all but disappeared in most of Europe. Juan Carlos Blanco is a doctor in Biology and one of the founding members of the Brown Bear Foundation, one of Spain’s most progressive private conservation bodies. As well as being concerned about bears he is an authority on the Iberian wolf which is the subject of one of his books and a number of his scientific papers. In this 1995 interview by Damian Martin, Juan Carlos Blanco clears up some of the myths surrounding wolf and bear conservation in Spain. Although population figures have been updated in recent years the main conservation issues remain true today.
What is the current status of Spain’s bear and wolf populations? So you consider that bears in the Spanish Pyrenees will definitely become extinct? How do you see the future for the wolf in Spain?

Mixed Connective Tissue Disorder is an autoimmune process with symptoms of Scleroderma, Myositis, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus , Rheumatoid Arthritis and/or other autoimmune diseases. It is a description of a group of symptoms occurring together. This is different from a diagnosis that describes the underlying process. It is a disorder of the immune system, which normally functions to protect the body against invading infections and cancers, and toxins. In Mixed Connective Tissue Disorder, as in other autoimmune diseases parts of the complex immune system is over-active and produces increased amounts of abnormal antibodies that attack the patient's own organs. Sometimes MCTD is called Overlap Syndrome or Undifferentiated Mix Connective Tissue Disorder. Some writers discriminate between them claiming that each of these are different. Some argue MCTD is not a distinct entity at all, and is just one of the forms of Lupus or Scleroderma. MCTD can affect many parts of the body, including the joints, skin, kidneys, lungs, heart, endocrine, digestive, and nervous system, blood vessels which all are made up of connective tissue. There are reports of psychiatric disturbances similar to those found in Lupus. The signs and symptoms of MCTD differ from person to person, with the symptoms of either Lupus, or Scleroderma, or Myositis or other autoimmune disease being most prevalent. Since its manifestations can vary it is often misdiagnosed. The disease can range from mild to life threatening. It can be mild for many years, and then after about 20 years of having the disease a medical crisis may occur. The lungs and kidneys are particularly at risk. Lungs and kidneys symptoms are particularly serious involvement and should be monitored vigilantly by both the doctor and the patient.

What is systemic lupus erythematosus?
Lupus (systemic lupus erythematosus, or SLE) is a chronic disease that can cause inflammation, pain, and tissue damage throughout the body. Lupus is an autoimmune disease , in which a person's immune system attacks its own tissues as though they were foreign substances. If you develop serious lupus, you may have problems with your kidneys, heart, lungs, or blood cells. Although some people with lupus have mild symptoms, the disease can become severe. For most people, ongoing monitoring and treatment can control symptoms and prevent serious organ damage.
