HOME ALTERNATIVE MEDICAL LIBRARY CATALOGUE TABLE OF CONTENTS NEXT CHAPTER HYGIENIC CARE OF THE "SYPHILITIC" Chapter XIV In "syphilis" we deal with a whole series of physical conditions arising out of a multiplicity of causes. The word syphilis could be, with profit for everyone, dropped from our language and forgotten. For as defined and described by "medical science," no such disease exists. The medical theory of its propagation is a super-colossal delusion. I do not deny the reality of the hundreds of symptoms that are claimed to belong to the four "stages" of "syphilis," but I do deny that these symptoms have any relation to a disease called "syphilis". The "loathsome symptoms" of "late syphilis" are built by mercury, arsenic, potassium iodide, bismuth and fear. Mercury, arsenic and bismuth are cumulative — they resist elimination; they remain in the body and build the conditions diagnosed as "tertiary syphilis," Chronic drug poisoning is added to the delusion "syphilis." My own experience in the care of "first stage syphilis' has been the same as that described by Tilden, who says: "My experience in the treatment of the disease from the chancre stage to recovery in from six weeks to two months without aftermaths of any kind, during more than threescore years, ought to demand a little attention from right minded people." I have seen no secondary and tertiary stages develop in any cases during a period of over twenty years in practice, I have seen chancres heal completely in three to four weeks after coming under my care.

Impaired Health Its Cause And Cure by J. H Tilden, M.D. Diseases Of The Nervous System
INTRODUCTION Where nerve energy is used beyond the recuperative power for a time, we have enervation following. This causes an interruptionretardingof secretions and excretions. Add to this retention of excretions the toxins that evolve when the eating is beyond the digestive power. This toxic state brings about functional derangement of the nervous system, and also functional derangement of various organs of the body. Much more on this subject will be found in [Tilden's book] Toxemia Explained. Influences That Lead to Nervous Diseases It is obvious that manipulations of all kinds will be beneficial. Electricity, vibratory treatment, massage, and certainly osteopathy and chiropractic adjustments, will be followed with positive relief. But such relief will often make the patient and doctor believe that a cure, has followed, when, if what I say is true, it is absurd to believe that a cure can be brought about in this way. In addition to the so-called cure, the righting of the system, by correcting disease-producing habits, will remove the cause; and then a cure may be had that can be depended upon. Manipulation will cause absorption; but if there is a slight irritation at the locality, which will bring a surplus amount of blood, there will be redeposits and a return of the discomfort. In all subjects where there is a scrofulous or gouty diathesis, and where there is a general toxemic state of the blood, the redeposits will continue until the toxemia is overcome and the system is readjusted to the original or normal state. It should be kept in mind, in treating the sick, that whatever is necessary to be done to bring them back to the normal should be done; and it should be obvious to all intelligent people that where there are irregular habits or bad habitswhere the life is not up to the normalin any respect, these perversions must be righted. There can be no hope of a readjustment and a bringing back to a normal state without correcting the errors of life.

NEURALGIA
(Pain in the course of a nerve.) SYMPTOMS
Burning or shooting pain in the course of the affected nerve; parts may be anesthetic, but usually there is hyperesthesia of the skin. Prolonged neuralgia may produce disturbance of nutrition.
Neuralgia may be due to constitutional causes, such as gout or rheumatism; or some form of toxemia, as malaria; or condition of the blood, as anemia. TREATMENT
Neuralgia of any part should be treated in a similar manner to Acute Articular Rheumatism of that part. If in the face, thorough manipulation of the face and neck should be given; if in a limb, thorough manipulation, extension, and flexion of that part should be applied.
It is often advisable in neuralgia to give a thorough General Treatment
This disease is sometimes cured in one or two treatments, in other instances baffling the skill of the most experienced operator.
Treatment should be given each day.
TIC-DOULOUREUX
(A form of neuralgia involving the trigeminus nerve, and causing muscular twitching of the face.)

Find out weak and strong points in patients system, history of diseases good way to know this. Many times the best way to strengthen weak parts is to make the strong parts stronger. Try to find out by questioning and by reasoning what relation previous diseases have to present disease. Find out in each particular case the strength and weakness of the blood and lymph system is predominate, in later life blood system becomes predominate. Note tendency to explosives. 3. Find out the susceptibilities of the nervous system, we can discover ways and means of aborting disease, especially nervous diseases.

The Scope of Neurology in the Nineteenth Century
Diseases of Importance As the clinical specialty of neurology developed in America, the types of disorders cared for by the practicing specialist included a mixture of disorders considered today neurological and psychiatric. Under the direction of SW Mitchell, the Philadelphia Infirmary for Nervous Diseases maintained one of the most detailed sets of case books for the period, showing that in 1871, typical diagnoses included locomotor ataxia, hemiplegia, chorea, local palsies, convulsive disorders, neuralgia and encephalitis. A number of disorders were of particular interest to American neurologists and helped to establish United States neurology in the international arena. Post-traumatic neuropathies and neurological disorders among women were specialties of SW Mitchell, and Hammond was celebrated for his studies of insomnia and athetosis. B. Sachs developed an expertise in pediatric neurology and FX Dercum acquired much of his reputation based on his gait studies. Neurological Diseases The diagnoses contained in case books from the Philadelphia Infirmary for Nervous Diseases included locomotor ataxia, hemiplegia, chorea, local palsies, infantile palsies, adult paralysis, convulsive diseases, neuralgia, epilepsy, and encephalitis. In addition, there are several cases labeled malingering.

Measurement of zinc serum levels in acne patients The present study included 26 patients with acne vulgaris (11 men and 15 females) aged between 12 and 40 years. The patients were allocated to three groups depending on the clinical form of the disease (comedonal or papullo-pustular), its severity, and therapeutic modality chosen to manage it. One group (8 patients) was treated with zineryt lotion, another one (8 patients) received lipanthyl combined with topical application of zineryt, and the third (10 patients) was offered combined treatment with zineryt, lipanthyl, and co-trimoxazole. Serum zinc levels were measured before and after treatment. Prior to therapy zinc levels in all patients were below normal. Treatment with the above products having different mechanisms of action had positive effect on serum zinc level in all patients with acne vulgaris. Those in the two former groups experienced a 2—3-fold increase whereas in the patients of the third group zinc levels were 4 times those before therapy.
Key words: acne vulgaris, zinc, zineryt, lipanthyl, co-trimoxazole.

“Love-o’Women” (1893) is a sad story concerning a gentleman-ranker, Larry Tighe, an acquaintance of Mulvaney’s, who, after numerous love affairs - from which he earned his nickname “Love-o’Women” - eventually showed signs of the later manifestations of syphilis. He returned to the one woman he really loved - he called her 'Di’monds an’ Pearls' and 'Aigypt' - and died in her arms. She shot herself.
When Mulvaney first knew him, Tighe was a big strong, handsome man. They went their separate ways before meeting again several years later. Then Tighe told Mulvaney that he was now called “Love-o’Women”, and that “Larry had been dead for three years”. It seems to me that Kipling was implying that Tighe had noticed the first signs of tabes dorsalis three years before meeting Mulvaney for the second time.
Tabes dorsalis tends to occur ten or more years after primary infection with syphilis and affects males more than females. Mulvaney thought Tighe had been injured as

The Medical Kipling-Syphilis, tabes dorsalis, and romberg's test
Emerging Infectious Diseases , June, 2004 by Setu K. Vora Robert W. Lyons Born of expatriate parents in Bombay, India, in 1865, Rudyard Kipling was the first English author to win the Nobel Prize for literature. He received this honor when he was not yet 42 years old. Indeed, Kipling's career is remarkable for its precocious success. His collection of verse Departmental Ditties was published when he was 20 years old. When he first went to England in 1889, he was already a well-known writer. In his short story Love-o'-Women, published in 1893 in the collection Many Inventions, Kipling gives a clinically accurate description of tabes dorsalis and what is probably the only literary description of Romberg's test. Love-o'-Women was published when Kipling was 27, a year after he had married Caroline Balestier, an American woman, and moved to Dummerston, Vermont. Kipling remained in Vermont for 4 years, during which time he wrote The Jungle Book, The Second Jungle Book, Captains Courageous, and The Seven Seas.

Feeling frazzled? Heat and humidity getting you down? You sense, perhaps, an incipient "loss of manhood, imbecility and helplessness"? Or "paralysis, softening of the brain, locomotor ataxia, and insanity when caused by nervous exhaustion?" Or simply those everyday "exhausting effects of life [and] weakening effects of weather upon the system"? The don't drink Moxie, which even enthusiast Frank N. Potter admits can have a bitter, medicinal taste. "like Lavoris with a dash of onion." But do read Potter's book. THE MOXIE MYSTIQUE (Donning Publishers, 5659 Virginia Beach Boulevard, Norfolk, Virginia 23502, $5.95 paper), Pure tonic, all the way.
The purity is, of course, true love. taste aside, Potter is simply, unabashedly smitten with everything to do with Moxie the word; the idea, the history, the spirit, the promotional stunts, the songs, the scandals, the collectibles (much better than Coke "the creme de la cream of soda pop collectibles"), the whole mise-en-scene, if you will, of American pep. I don't know Potter's politics and couldn't care less, but as with all obsessive ardor there's a secret, tangy yearning that could be subversive: "Hot dogs, baseball, apple pie and Chevrolet are fine as far as they go," he writes in a preface, "but moxie goes deeper, wider, higher. Let's hope its mystique will never die." I'm a seltzer man myself (martinis on the side), but I tell you, I'm entranced.
