Surgical Director, CLDT The Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation is a multidisciplinary treatment center offering the seamless integration of medical, surgical and radiologic expertise in caring for patients with liver disease. Clinical innovation and scientific progress are at the core of the Center's mission to treat and cure of disorders of the liver and biliary system in adults and children. The Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation is one of the first liver programs built from the inception as a multidisciplinary unit. This means that our patients benefit from the close collaboration of the hepatologists, gastroenterologists, hepatobiliary surgeons, diagnostic and pathology experts, advanced-care nurses, social workers, and patient support staff affiliated with the program. The Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation offers all levels of service, from ambulatory care to transplantation, for patients suffering from all forms of liver disease. The Center is committed to caring for all patients, regardless of financial status, and participates with many insurance plans. Regional and national healthcare insurers recognize the Center both for its clinical excellence and it cost effective care. While NewYork-Presbyterian's contracting professionals continually expand the roster of participating health insurance plans, the Center's financial counselor works directly with patients and their families to negotiate coverage with their insurers, or develop out-of-network case rates as needed.

What Are the Myths Vs. Facts About Alcohol and the Liver? True or False?
  • Many victims of liver disease are not alcoholics.
  • Even moderate social drinkers may risk liver damage.
  • People who never drink alcoholic beverages may still get serious liver problems.
Answer: All statements are true. How many did you get right? If you were surprised by the answers, don't be discouraged. You are not alone. Most people are confused about the relationship between alcohol and the liver. The American Liver Foundation has found that there is much misunderstanding on this subject. Because myths can be harmful, here are straight answers to some of the most common questions about alcohol and the liver. Does alcohol cause liver disease? Yes, but it is only one of the many causes, and the risk depends on how much you drink and over how long a period. There are more than 100 liver diseases. Known causes include viruses, hereditary defects, and reactions to drugs and chemicals. Scientists are still investigating the causes for the most serious liver diseases. How much alcohol can I safely drink?

Avoiding Wheat and Gluten May Reverse Liver Failure and Hepatitis
The gluten-free diet prescribed for the digestive disorder celiac disease may reverse liver failure in some patients with both conditions. And, the relatively high frequency of undiagnosed celiac disease among people with serious liver conditions suggests the disorder should be looked for in certain liver disease patients. Celiac disease is a digestive disorder that damages the small intestine and interferes with the normal absorption of nutrients from food. It arises from an allergic reaction to gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye, barley, oats and spelt. The problem often goes undetected because many of its symptoms such as abdominal pain, fatigue and diarrhea are similar to a range of other disorders. And some patients have no symptoms.

Questions in the Gastroenterology and Liver Diseases Forum have been answered by
Dr. Kevin Pho who is board certified in Internal Medicine and by doctors from Henry Ford Health System. Forum: The Gastroenterology and Liver Diseases Forum
    Topic: Liver - General
Subject: Drug Induced Liver Disorder I recently had some routine blood workup on an annual physical and was told my SGOT was elevated to 500. Part of the blood work-up was to check my Uric acid levels because I have been on Zyloprim 300mg for about 15 months due to a previous attack of Gout. My question is: Can my SGOT be elevated due to taking prolonged medications such as Zyloprim? Note: I am also have been on Tenormin 100mg and Lozol 2.5mg for about 20 years and was also put on Slow K 8. about 1 year ago.
Would any of these or the combination of these effect my liver? I have been asymptomatic, and feel great!~ So far! My alcohol comsumption was about 2-3 drinks a day, which along with Zyloprim, Lozol and Slow K have now all been discontinued! Thank you for your time. This is a great service!!!

Liver disorders Early diagnosis of a liver disorder can save your life. Though some hepatitis viruses cause an acute but temporary flu-like illness, others can produce a chronic, persistent liver infection. Natural therapies aim to protect the liver and boost the immune system. Symptoms
    • Fatigue and weakness; a general feeling of poor health.
    • Temperature.
    • Nausea and vomiting ; loss of appetite; weight loss. Aching muscles or joints.
    • Abdominal discomfort, pain, or swelling.
    • Jaundice (yellowish tinge of skin and whites of eyes).
    • Dark urine and pale stools. See your doctor
    • If you think you have been exposed to hepatitis, either through contaminated food or water or by sexual contact with an infected person.
    • If you develop lingering flu-like symptoms. During its acute phase, viral hepatitis so closely resembles flu that it is often misdiagnosed.
    • If you develop jaundice or other symptoms of hepatitis.

Reminder: If you have a medical condition, consult your doctor before taking supplements. How supplements can help
The recommended supplements should be used together, along with conventional drugs, until symptoms of acute hepatitis subside. Benefits may be noticed within a week. For chronic disease, take them long term.
