Medical Information
Blood Chemistry Profile BCP Overview Diabetes Mellitus Kidney Disorders Liver Disorders ... Blood Proteins CV Profile CV Overview Body Mass Index Heart Disease Risk Factors Healthy Living Tests for Liver Disorders  Four enzymes and bilirubin are used to screen for possible liver disease. Enzymes are proteins which facilitate chemical reactions within the body's cells. The types of enzymes within body cells vary greatly by their function and organ location. Alkaline Phosphatase (AP), Aspartate Aminotransferase (SGOT, AST), Alanine Aminotransferase (SGPT, ALT) and Gamma Glutamyl Transferase (GGT) are enzymes present in the liver cells in increased amounts. When the liver is injured, one or more of these enzymes can be released by the damaged cells causing an elevation in their blood level(s). Many liver disorders cause damage slowly over many years in the absence of symptoms or loss of function. AP, AST, ALT and/or GGT elevations can be the only indication of a previously unrecognized chronic liver disease. Blood levels of one or more of these enzymes above the usual clinical range suggest the possibility of a liver disorder. This possibility is increased with greater elevations. For example, an enzyme elevation which is more than three times the usual clinical range is more suggestive of a liver disorder than an enzyme elevation which is less than twice the usual clinical range. Similarly, multiple enzyme elevations increase the possibility of a liver disorder. AP, AST, ALT and GGT elevations are suggestive but not specific for liver disease. GGT elevation can also result from prolonged, excessive alcohol use. The significance of any enzyme elevation is best determined in the context of your personal medical history. Your personal physician is the best judge of the need for repeat or additional laboratory studies. Chronic viral hepatitis caused by either the hepatitis B or C virus is a significant cause of chronic liver disease in the United States. ALT elevation is more specific for liver damage caused by chronic viral hepatitis. Northwestern Mutual automatically screens blood chemistry profiles with ALT elevations for evidence of exposure to the hepatitis B and C virus.

These include disorders that reduce liver function (such as cirrhosis or hepatitis ) and conditions where blood circulation bypasses the liver. The exact cause of the disorder is unknown. However, when the liver cannot properly metabolize and detoxify substances in the body, toxic substances build up in the bloodstream. One substance believed to be particularly toxic to the central nervous system is

What are autoimmune liver disorders?
An autoimmune disorder is any reaction or attack of a person's immune system against its own organs and tissues. In the liver, the immune system can destroy liver cells and damage bile ducts. Chronic active hepatitis can be caused by an autoimmune disorder.
What are metabolic liver disorders?
Two main metabolic disorders affect the liver:
  • hemochromatosis (Also called iron overload disease.) characterized by the absorption of too much iron from food. Instead of secreting the excess iron, the iron is stored throughout the body, including the liver and pancreas. The excess iron can damage these organs. Hemochromatosis is a hereditary disease that can lead to liver disease, liver failure, liver cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. Wilson's disease characterized by the retention of too much copper in the liver. Instead of releasing the copper into the bile, the liver retains the copper. Eventually, the damaged liver releases copper into the bloodstream. This hereditary disease can cause damage to the kidneys, brain, and eyes, and can lead to severe brain damage, liver failure, and death.

    Description
This text has been organized to provide the reader with a comprehensive coverage of the physiological and biochemical processes essential for the understanding of diseases affecting the different parts of the gastrointestinal tract. It describes novel and recent concepts in the pathophysiology and management of common gastrointestinal, pancreatic and liver disorders encountered in infants and young children. Each chapter presents a basic clinical approach to the problem including pertinent investigations for confirming the diagnosis and for discussing the most appropiate therapy. Commonly used drugs are listed while references cited are the more recent rather than the classic ones. A vast number of related subjects are covered, each subject being presented by experts in that particular field.
The book is divided into five parts: Disorders of the Oesophagus and Stomach; The Small Intestine and Stomach; The Exocrine Pancreas; and The Liver.

About Your Liver Diet Diagnosis Transplant ... Glossary
About Your Liver Your liver is for life . You have only one and though it is unique in its ability to regenerate, it can only survive limited damage – so it does need looking after. Place your right hand over the area under your ribs on the right side of your body and it will just about cover the area of the liver. The liver is the largest gland, and solid organ in the body, weighing some 1.8 kgs in a men and 1.3 kgs in women. It holds approximately 13% (about one pint or 0.57 litres) of the total blood supply at any given moment, and it has over 500 estimated functions. Position of the liver in the body
The liver is dark reddish brown in colour and is divided into two main lobes (the much larger right and the smaller left), which are further subdivided into approximately 100,000 lobules. About 60% of the liver is made up of liver cells (hepatocytes), and each of these have an average lifespan of 150 days. In every milligram of liver tissue there are approximately 202,000 cells. Two-thirds of the body of the liver is the parenchyma, which contains the hepatocytes, and the remainder is the biliary tract. The liver receives its blood supply via the hepatic artery and portal vein (which transports nutrients from the intestine (gut)).
The Liver and Biliary Tract The biliary tract contains the right and left hepatic ducts, which meet to form the common hepatic duct. This is joined by the cystic duct from the gall bladder, which then forms the common bile duct. The common bile duct joins the intestine at the duodenum through a valve called the Sphinter of Oddi.
