(body and pubic [crab] lice) Lice are cosmopolitan parasites of humans, occurring in all areas of the world and in all socio-economic classes. The body louse will serve as the vector for typhus (caused by Rickettsia prowazekii ), trench fever (caused by Rochalimaea quintana, a rickettsia), and relapsing fever (caused by a spirochete, Borrelia recurrentis ). Severe epidemics of these diseases have occurred throughout history, particularly during wars, so lice and the diseases they spread have played an important role in human history. Lice are spread from human to human most often by direct contact or contact with contaminated clothing, etc. Body lice are restricted most often to the human body and head (some authorities believe the head louse is a separate species). Crab lice are most often restricted to the pubic region, but may spread to the armpits, facial hair (beard, etc.), eyebrows, and eyelashes. Infestations with lice are not a serious problem (as long as the lice are not infected with a disease), but they can cause a number of uncomfortable symptoms, including skin irritations and intense itching. London. bottom of page Natural History Pubic lice, or Pthirus pubis, Pediculus capitis and the body louse, Pediculus humanus that can infest humans. Pubic lice are found worldwide, they are haematophagous (feeds on blood), and strictly host specific to humans. Typically, they infest the hair of the pubic and perianal regions but are occasionally found in other areas where the hair is sparse and coarse. This includes the hair of the beard, moustache, eyelashes, armpits, and sometimes the chest and abdomen. The hair on the scalp is usually unsuitable, because of its fine texture closeness of the shafts, but pubic lice are occasionally found at margins of the head on the hairline. If children are infested, the lice will generally be found only in the eyebrows or eyelashes. The pubic louse is grey in colour, and smaller (1.25 -2.00mm) than the head and body louse. Their body shape is oval and broader than long, with four distinct lobe-like protuberances on each side of their abdomen. The lice have a small head with short antennae and simple eyes. Each of the six legs of the louse terminates in a claw, but

This page is devoted to body lice, the pathology they cause and their control.
http://medent.usyd.edu.au/fact/bodylice.html
Department of Medical Entomology Body Lice modified from: Service, M.W. (1980). A guide to Medical Entomology . Macmillan. London. bottom of page Natural History Pediculus humanus, or the body/clothing louse is a blood sucking species of louse that can live between the skin and clothing of humans. This host specific ectoparasite of humans is thought to have evolved from head lice ( Pediculus capitis Transmission of body lice occurs when living conditions are crowded, personal hygiene is neglected, clothes are not changed and facilities for laundering clothes are not available. Lice can spread rapidly through homeless people or victims of war and natural disasters, when people sleep in their clothes and huddle together for warmth. Bedding and furniture have also been implicated as a source of infestation in overcrowded environments.
Clinical Presentation
Laboratory Diagnosis
Identification of louse specimens is by light microscopy. Detail from the patient on exactly what part of the body the specimens were collected is important in establishing the identity of the louse. Head lice, Pediculus capitis (see Head Lice ), are taxonomically very difficult to differentiate from body lice. Body lice are rarely found on the head of an infected person and, when not on the body, tend to stay hidden within layers of clothes.

Pediculus humanus capitis
Description and Biology
The head louse (Pediculus humanus capitis ) is gray in color but tends to take on the hair color of the host. This insect pest is usually found on the lower back of the head and behind the ears. The female is about 1/16" to 1/8" long and flattened in shape; the male is a bit smaller. Hook-like claws are at the end of each of six legs to help anchor the louse to the hair shaft. Head lice do not jump or fly. A female head louse will live about 30 days on a host. During this period, she will deposit about 90 eggs, three a day. The grayish white, 1/16" long eggs are cemented to hair shafts next to the scalp. The eggs are called "nits" and hatch in about one week. The newly hatched lice (called "nymphs") molt three times in eight or nine days before becoming adults. The life cycle is completed in about 15 days. During this time, the nymphs, as well as the adults, feed with piercing and sucking mouthparts, injecting saliva to keep blood from clotting. If the lice are not disturbed, feeding may continue for extended periods, and the insects may excrete dark red feces onto the scalp. The first major symptom of a louse infestation can be intense itching caused by the louse's feeding, although certain individuals may not experience itching at all. Breaks in the skin caused by the louse and resultant scratching can cause secondary bacterial skin infection, especially in the absence of good hygiene.

135. Parenting Hints - Head Lice And Children
A comprehensive guide to the removal and prevention of head lice in children
http://www.parentinghints.com/head_lice.html
Head Lice And Children
Head lice is a nasty, unpleasant problem which is fifficult to eradicate, BUT please check your children's hair / head regularly and treat )if necessary) immediatly. There are many excellent products available to assist with treatment and eradication of head lice, and below I have given a less expensive and chemically safe way to treat for head lice. Prevention is the best cure! You should always encourage girls with long hair ro keep it tied back in a pony tail, pig tails. plaits or a bun. This will eliminate the lice being transferred froim one child to another. Other methods of prevention are:
  • avoiding physical contact with a person who has lice
  • not sharing combs, brushes, hats, scarves, ribbons, or other personal items
  • examining and treating members of your household who have had close contact with a person infected with lice
  • keeping your child home from school or day care until the morning after treatment for lice
If you find lice, your child should be treated. If your child has not been treated for head lice before, and you only find eggs, you should consider treating for head lice. However, another option if you do not want to use insecticidal treatments, is to check again the next day using the conditioner and comb technique. If your child has been treated recently, and you find only hatched eggs, but no lice, you may not need to treat since the eggs could be from the old infection.

  • What Is It? Body lice are small, parasitic insects found mainly on the clothing of infested people, and occasionally on their bodies or bedding. Although they are related to head lice, and look almost exactly the same, body lice rarely infest the head hair. Instead, they spend most of their life on an infested person's clothing, crawling onto the skin to feed on the host's blood one or more times a day.
