I would like to know what it is and what the survival rate for Leukemia is. Good friend Dear Good friend, Leukemia is a general term for several types of cancers which are represented by a proliferation of disorganized white blood cells in the bone marrow. They are called leukemic cells, and impair the production of red blood cells, platelets, and normal white blood cells. Leukemic cells circulate throughout the blood, impairing the function of organs such as the liver, spleen, lymph nodes or brain. Leukemias are either acute or chronic, and are classified by the type of abnormal white blood cell present. Acute cases generally develop more rapidly than chronic cases. If acute leukemia goes untreated it can be fatal within a few weeks or months. However with treatment, life can be prolonged and in some instances a complete cure may be provided. Approximately 6-7 new cases of acute leukemia are diagnosed per 100,000 people per year. Chronic cases include lymphocytic leukemia (excess mature looking lymphocytes), and myeloid leukemia (excess white blood cells called granulocytes). There are approximately 4 new cases of chronic lymphocytic leukemia per 100,000 people each year. It usually occurs in people over 50, and is incurable but is not always fatal. Treatment includes transfusions, antibiotics, and in severe cases, use of anticancer drugs, or radiation therapy. The disease progresses slowly, and more than half of those diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia survive at least five years from time of diagnosis.

Description
Leukemia Research is an international journal which brings comprehensive and current information to all health care professionals involved in basic and (or) applied clinical research in leukemias, lymphomas, multiple myeloma and other hematologic malignancies. The editors encourage the submission of articles relevant to normal and leukemic hemopoiesis, biochemistry, cell biology, immunology and molecular biology as well as epidemiologic and clinical studies.
Specifically, of major interest will be articles that encompass the application of oncogenes, growth factors, cell markers, cell cycle and differentiation agents, novel therapeutics and clinical trials in both the acute and chronic leukemias as well as the myelodysplastic syndromes. In addition we solicit selected articles on the rapidly increasing specialty of marrow or stem cell reconstitution after high dose therapy with curative attempt in patients with a wide range of neoplasms.

Possible link between Agent Orange, leukemia
WASHINGTON (CNN) Research released Thursday suggests a possible association between a child's chance of getting a type of leukemia and a parent's exposure to Agent Orange, a defoliant used during the Vietnam War that already has been linked to several health problems among veterans and their offspring. But a congressionally mandated report from the Institute of Medicine stopped short of establishing a direct cause and effect between Agent Orange and acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), instead calling the evidence "limited or suggestive." Irva Hertz-Picciotto, professor of epidemiology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and chair of the committee that conducted the study, said researchers saw a 70 percent higher risk of AML for children whose parents served in Vietnam or Cambodia. Leukemia Overview
Cancer is a process of uncontrolled abnormal cell growth and development. Under normal circumstances, cells are formed, mature, carry out their intended function, and then die. New cells are constantly regenerated in the body to replace those cells and to maintain normal cellular function. Cancer represents the disturbance of this process, which can occur in several ways. Cells may grow and reproduce in a disorganized and out-of-control fashion. Cells may fail to develop properly, so they will not function normally. Cells may fail to die normally. One or a combination of these processes may occur when cells become cancerous. Leukemia is a cancer of blood-forming cells in the bone marrow. These deranged, immature cells accumulate in the blood and within organs of the body. They are not able to carry out the normal functions of blood cells. Normal blood contains 3 major groups of cells: white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. All 3 types of blood cells develop from one immature cell type, called blood/marrow stem cells, in a process called hematopoiesis.
  • These stem cells divide and develop to a more developed, but still immature precursor, called a blast, which then develops through several more stages, into a mature blood cell.

Newer drug holds off leukemia longer
BOSTON, Massachusetts (Reuters) Using the drug fludarabine as the first line of defense keeps chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) at bay longer than standard treatment, but it does not affect overall survival, according to a study in this week's New England Journal of Medicine. CLL is the most common form of leukemia in adults, striking about 8,100 people in the United States each year.
