Chronic leukemia is a type of cancer that starts in blood-forming cells of the bone marrow , and then can spread to other parts of the body including the lymph nodes, liver, spleen, skin, and brain. Other types of cancer can start in organs such as the lungs, colon, or breast, and then spread to the bone marrow. These cancers that start elsewhere and then spread to the bone marrow are not leukemia. Bone Marrow and Lymphoid Tissue Bone marrow is the soft inner part of some bones such as the skull, shoulder blade, ribs, pelvis, and backbones. The bone marrow is made up of hematopoietic (blood-forming) cells, fat cells, and supporting tissues that aid the growth of hematopoietic cells. It contains pluripotent stem cells that continually reproduce to form new cells. Some of these new cells remain as stem cells while others go through a series of changes. During this process, pluripotent stem cells stop reproducing and eventually become either lymphoid cells or hematopoietic stem cells. The hematopoietic stem cells also can divide and form new hematopoietic stem cells or develop into one of the three main types of blood cells - red blood cells, white blood cells, or platelets.

Leukemia is a cancer that starts in the organs that make blood, namely the bone marrow (the soft inner part of the bone) and the lymph system. In leukemia, abnormal and immature white blood cells are produced in the bone marrow and lymph system. The immature white blood cells are called leukocytes. In some individuals, leukocytes are so numerous that the blood actually has a whitish tinge. When abnormal and immature white blood cells are produced, production of normal cells decreases and the ability to fight infection decreases. The ability to fight infection decreases because the leukemic cells accumulate and lessen the production of oxygen-carrying red blood cells, blood-clotting cells (platelets), and normal leukocytes. If left untreated, the surplus leukemic cells overwhelm the bone marrow, enter the bloodstream, and will eventually invade other parts of the body, such as the lymph nodes, spleen liver , and the brain , and spinal cord.
