Abstract
It is estimated that in the United States 15% of the general population has a learning disability (Monarez 1992, p. F3). It is possible that many of the ESL students whom we view as poor language learners are struggling because they too have a learning disability. In many countries, learning disabilities are not recognized or, in some cases, they are recognized but not dealt with. This paper is meant to be a basic primer on learning disabilities. It will describe classroom behaviors associated with several common learning problems, the results of research into them and it will offer practical suggestions to classroom teachers for working more profitably with these students. According to Dr. Melvin Levine, Director of the Clinical Center for the Study of Development and Learning at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill: Learning Disability is the term currently used to describe a handicap that interferes with someones ability to store, process or produce information. Such disabilities affect both children and adults. The impairment can be quite subtle and go [-1-] undetected throughout life. But learning disabilities create a gap between a persons true capacity and his day to day production and performance. Its not always immediately obvious that a person has a learning disability. The most straightforward indication is academic failure or underachievement by someone who seems capable of more (Levine 1984, p.1).

Gifted and Learning Disabled?
It Is Possible! Lynda Conover

Virginia Association for the Education of the Gifted
Newsletter Volume 17, Number 3, Summer 1996 In a recent conversation with the mother of a former student, I learned that her son, Rob, had been placed in the gifted class for math in the school he now attends. His mother was very pleased but told me that, because Rob is also learning disabled, she went to speak with the math teacher to explain accommodations Rob might need. She was stunned to hear the teacher say that, had she known about Rob's learning disability, she would never have allowed him to be placed in her class. The teacher went on to say that it was not possible to be gifted and learning disabled. Rob's mother will keep close tabs on his situation and Tommy did learn to read through a very structured program, while I'm left wondering how we can help teachers accept that students may be gifted and learning disabled and how we can better prepare them to identify and meet the needs of these students. As we take a closer look at this seemingly strange combination, it will be good to keep in mind the heterogeneity found in nearly every group of students with whom we, as teachers and administrators, work. Spend a day in a gifted resource class and you will begin to notice that gifted students vary tremendously in terms of learning styles, readiness, and interests. So, too, do those in the learning disabilities resource room and the regular classroom as well!

STUDENTS WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES
A Guide for Staff and Students
The Australian National University, 1995
What are Learning Disabilities (LD)? Common Indicators of LD For Staff: Teaching and Assessment Strategies For Students: Self-Help Strategies ... References
WHAT ARE LEARNING DISABILITIES (LD)?
Learning disabilities are `severe and prolonged difficulties in the acquisition and development of expected literacy, numeracy and reasoning skills given at least average intelligence and the absence of other causal factors' (Monash University Guidelines). Learning disabilities are presumed to arise from neurological impairment. They are intrinsic to the individual, occur across the lifespan and allow for much variation in the presented difficulties. They are not caused by low intellectual ability, inappropriate learning background or emotional difficulties, though these disadvantages might coexist with learning disabilities.

S ome Facts Psychologists Know About ACADEMIC PROBLEMS DO I HAVE A LEARNING DISABILITY? Most students wonder about a learning disability or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder when someone, such as a professor, parent, friend, relative, etc. usually raises it as a possibility. Typically these students are experiencing difficulty in school or work, and are unclear why after making every effort, are not succeeding as they should. Learning disabilities are an inherent, life-long condition that can affect friendships, school, college, trade school or university, becoming successful in business, the arts or in their chosen profession. But, for many, these individuals have struggled, even though they are intelligent, experiencing low self-confidence, feeling defeated, and frustrated. If you feel you may benefit from a learning disability evaluation (also known as a psychoeducational evaluation), please consider coming to Psychological Services Center (316 Dyer Hall) for a screening appointment. This is a free, first, consultation session where you can explore whether a learning disability evaluation is appropriate for you.
