C HILDREN WITH L EARNING D ISABILITIES No. 16 (Updated 5/99) P arents are often worried when their child has learning problems in school. There are many reasons for school failure, but a common one is a specific learning disability. Children with learning disabilities usually have a normal range of intelligence. They try very hard to follow instructions, concentrate, and "be good" at home and in school. Yet, despite this effort, he or she is not mastering school tasks and falls behind. Learning disabilities affect at least 1 in 10 schoolchildren. It is believed that learning disabilities are caused by a difficulty with the nervous system that affects receiving, processing, or communicating information. They may also run in families. Some children with learning disabilities are also hyperactive; unable to sit still, easily distracted, and have a short attention span. Child and adolescent psychiatrists point out that learning disabilities are treatable. If not detected and treated early, however, they can have a tragic "snowballing" effect. For instance, a child who does not learn addition in elementary school cannot understand algebra in high school. The child, trying very hard to learn, becomes more and more frustrated, and develops emotional problems such as low self-esteem in the face of repeated failure. Some learning disabled children misbehave in school because they would rather be seen as "bad" than "stupid". Parents should be aware of the most frequent signals of learning disabilities, when a child:

Exceptional Children
HYG-5265-96
Pat Shenberger An exceptional child is one that is different in some way from the "normal" or "average" child. The term "exceptional child" includes those with special problems related to physical disabilities, sensory impairments, emotional disturbances, learning disabilities, and mental retardation. Most exceptional children require a lot of understanding and patience as well as special education and related services if they are to reach their full potential of development. It is estimated that one out of every ten children in the United States is an exceptional child, representing a total of nearly eight million children. However, it is difficult to determine the number of exceptional children in a given category for many reasons. The definitions of handicapping conditions are often ambiguous. Diagnosis of a condition may overlap with another condition or the diagnoses may change over time. Many exceptional children remain undetected and often parents resist having their children identified as exceptional because of the stigma attached with labeling. Families with children who have special needs are just like other families in many ways. These "ordinary" families can take many forms: traditional; single-parent; multi-cultural; and blended. They are also of various socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds.

Perhaps feeling bombarded by sights and sounds, unable to focus your attention. Or trying to read or add but not being able to make sense of the letters or numbers. You may not need to imagine. You may be the parent or teacher of a child experiencing academic problems, or have someone in your family diagnosed as learning disabled. Or possibly as a child you were told you had a reading problem called dyslexia or some other learning handicap. Although different from person to person, these difficulties make up the common daily experiences of many learning disabled children, adolescents, and adults. A person with a learning disability may experience a cycle of academic failure and lowered self-esteem. Having these handicapsor living with someone who has themcan bring overwhelming frustration. But the prospects are hopeful. It is important to remember that a person with a learning disability can learn. The disability usually only affects certain limited areas of a child's development. In fact, rarely are learning disabilities severe enough to impair a person's potential to live a happy, normal life.
