The pharynx is a hollow tube about 5 inches long that starts behind the nose and goes down to the neck to become part of the oesophagus, the tube that goes to the stomach. Air and food pass through the pharynx on the way to the windpipe (trachea) or the oesophagus.
Cancer of the Paranasal Sinus and Nasal Cavity

What is the Larynx? The voice box or the larynx is a tubular, 2-inch long organ in the neck. The larynx is used by humans to talk, breath, or swallow. The larynx sits atop the windpipe or the trachea. It is made of a material called cartilage. The main cartilage, which forms the front of the larynx, is referred to in common parlance as Adam's apple.
Inside Adam's apple, forming a 'V', are two bands of muscle called the vocal cords . During the process of breathing air, the vocal cords inside the larynx are narrowed or relaxed voluntarily and the air passing in between them sets up vibrations, which produces the sound of our voice. The tongue, the teeth, and the lips form the sound into coherent words.
Just behind the trachea and the larynx in the neck lies the food pipe or the esophagus, which carries the food from the mouth to the stomach. The opening of the

Alternate Names : Cancer of the Glottis, Laryngeal Cancer, Throat Cancer, Vocal Cord Cancer Throat or Larynx Cancer Treatment Treatment is aimed at destruction of the cancer and prevention of spread of the cancer to other parts of the body. When the tumor is small, either surgery or radiation therapy alone can be used to eliminate the tumor.
When the tumor is larger or has spread to lymph nodes in the neck, combination radiation and chemotherapy is often used to preserve the voice box and is successful in most cases.

LARYNX CANCER
What is the Larynx?
The larynx is the upper portion of the windpipe ("trachea") which has a two main functions: conducting air down into the lungs, and producing speech in humans. The human larynx is composed of 3 areas: supraglottis, glottis, and subglottis. The glottis is literally the "voicebox" and contains the paired vocal cords. The subglottis extends about 1/2" below the glottis, while the supraglottis extends about 2 inches above the vocal cords. The epiglottis , which is a flap of flesh that folds down over the trachea to protect the lungs during swallowing, is part of the supraglottis. The whole larynx is in front of the foodpipe ("esophagus") and is just behind the skin of the throat.
Placing a finger directly under the "Adams apple" (which is a movable bone in the neck called the hyoid) and humming allows you to feel the vocal cords vibrating right under your finger. Only a thin membrane and the skin of the neck separate the vocal cords from your finger at this point; doctors use it as a landmark to insert an emergency air tube ("cricothyrotomy") in situations where a patient's upper airway is blocked. The area of the vocal cords is the narrowest part of the airway and the easiest to block by tumor or an object swallowed "the wrong way".

Summary regarding throat cancer Throat Cancer (Cancer Of The Larynx) Introduction: Cancer of the larynx, or "throat cancer" how it is usually called by the public, has a lot of publicity. Many famous actors and personalities who have been smokers came down with this disease and when the voice disappears the career usually ends. Among all cancers it takes about place 20 on the "olympic" scale. It is 16 times less frequent than prostate cancer, 15 times less frequent than breast cancer and 14 times less frequent than lung cancer. Yet every popular magazine seems to have to report about this cancer once per year just for the record. It is not surprising though, as a large portion of our human characteristic make-up is transmitted through the voice. Cancer has no mercy and can destroy the vocal cords in only a few weeks. It is therefore of the utmost importance to pay attention to any changes in sound quality of your own voice or the voice of those around you. If in doubt have an ear nose and throat specialist check it out! This specialist is trained to use fiberoptic laryngoscopic equipment in the office, which can very quickly establish whether it is a harmless polyp or a deadly cancer.

What is Larynx Cancer?
The larynx is the voice box. It is made up of the glottis, which is the vocal cords, the area below (subglottis) and the area above (supraglottis) the vocal cords. Any of the cells lining the larynx can become cancerous. How common is Larynx Cancer?
In men, the number of new cases of larynx cancer diagnosed in the last 5 years has been decreasing compared to the time before. It is six times more common in men than women. Risks and Causes
Smoking is one of the commonest risk factors associated with larynx cancer. Alcohol consumption is also a risk factor. Smokers who also drink alcohol have a much higher risk of developing larynx cancer than persons who only smoke or who only drink alcohol. Symptoms and Signs of Larynx Cancer
A person should seek early medical attention if he has a persistently hoarse voice or a persistent sore throat, a painless lump in the neck, pain on swallowing, difficulty swallowing, or noisy breathing known as stridor. As cancer can spread to other organs in the body, in the very late stages there may be symptoms from the lungs or bone.

40. Lung And Larynx Cancer
Approximately 12500 new cases of cancer of the larynx, or voicebox, occur each year, 9800 in males and 2700 in females (Boring et al., 1994).

Lung and Larynx Cancer
Jay H. Lubin, Ph.D. Primary lung cancer accounts for about 15 percent of all cancer cases (19 percent in males and 11 percent in females) in the United States; however, because of its high death rate, it accounts for 29 percent of all cancer deathsÑ35 percent in males and 21 percent in females (Boring et al., 1994). The overall 5-year relative survival rate is only 13 percent (Ries et al., 1994). Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer death in most countries. Maoris of New Zealand experienced the highest incidence rate in the world among males, with a world standardized rate of 119.1 per 100,000 (Parkin et al., 1992). U.S. black men were near the highest, with an incidence rate of 90.0 per 100,000. Low rates were noted for Israel, India, and Latin American countries. The worldwide incidence of lung cancer is substantially lower in femalesa difference generally attributed to lighter tobacco consumption by women, although other factors may play a role. For example, high levels of indoor and outdoor air pollution have been postulated as an important contributor to the high rates of lung cancer among females in China, whose smoking prevalence is relatively low (Blot and Fraumeni, 1992). In the United States, lung cancer incidence has risen more sharply in females (4.6 percent annual change) than in males (0.5 percent annual change) in recent years, reflecting the growing popularity of cigarette smoking among females over the past several decades (Ries et al., 1994). Currently, more women die each year from lung cancer than breast cancer (Boring et al., 1994).
