Laryngitis

Do you have hoarseness or laryngitis? When we speak, two membranes, the vocal cords, vibrate to make sound. Hoarseness indicates these cords are malfunctioning either from swelling after yelling at the football game, or infection, or excess smoking or something interfering with this movement. At the start of hoarseness DO NOT GARGLE. This is like rubbing your eyes when they are inflamed. Reduce your talking, stay off the phone. Coughing makes hoarseness much worse. Steam is good - boil water, stick out your tongue and breathe the steam. Drink warm liquids - more is better, but not boiling hot. Avoid ice. Papain/ bromelain enzyme tablets , dissolved in the mouth between the cheek and gums, are very effective. This is especially useful if the pain follows flying or scuba diving. It is very important to look for a) a combination of papain and bromelain, and b) a calibrated enzyme activity of one million units of bromelain from pineapple and a half million units of papain from papaya. (Be careful of using enzyme tablets which do not list the enzyme activity - you can't be sure if you're getting the right amount, and most have insignificant activity.) Hoarseness develops because the cold or sore throat gets to the larynx and causes the vocal cords to swell. It gets worse because we try to speak in spite of the swelling, or if people speak incorrectly. The more relaxed your neck muscles, the less chance for hoarseness. Frequent hoarseness may be caused by tight neck muscles. Make sure your head is not turned when you talk. Speaking from bed may be a factor. I have my singers do an exercise in the shower: with the water directed onto back of the neck, gently turn the neck, as if to see who is standing behind you. Alternate sides and continue for 3 minutes. If performed daily, this will help to keep these muscles relaxed.

Laryngitis
Laryngitis is usually due to a viral infection. You may become hoarse, but symptoms usually go within a week or so. See a doctor if symptoms persist.
What is laryngitis? The larynx joins the back of the throat to the trachea (windpipe). The vocal cords are in the larynx. Laryngitis means inflammation of the larynx. It is usually due to a viral infection (viral laryngitis). What are the symptoms of viral laryngitis? You may feel sore over the 'Adams apple' and become hoarse shortly afterwards. The voice sometimes 'goes', and you may only be able to whisper. Some people are alarmed at this. However, it is only temporary whilst the vocal cords are inflamed during the infection. You may also have a mild fever, and a cough. Sometimes laryngitis is part of a more widespread infection. For example, you may also have an infected throat (pharyngitis), tonsillitis, a cold, or a flu-like illness. In these situations, you may also have other symptoms such as a sore throat, headache, feeling tired, swollen neck glands, runny nose, pain on swallowing, and general aches and pains. A typical viral laryngitis gets worse over 2-3 days. It then eases and goes, usually within a week. However, you may have a croaky voice for a week or so even after the other symptoms have gone. This is because the inflammation of the vocal cords may take a while to settle after the virus has gone.

Laryngitis
Definition
Laryngitis is caused by inflammation of the larynx, resulting in hoarseness of the voice. Description
When air is breathed in (inspired), it passes through the nose and the nasopharynx or through the mouth and the oropharynx. These are both connected to the larynx, a tube made of cartilage. The vocal cords, responsible for setting up the vibrations necessary for speech, are located within the larynx. The air continues down the larynx to the trachea. The trachea then splits into two branches, the left and right bronchi (bronchial tubes). These bronchi branch into smaller air tubes which run within the lungs, leading to the small air sacs of the lungs (alveoli). Either food, liquid, or air may be taken in through the mouth. While air goes into the larynx and the respiratory system, food and liquid are directed into the tube leading to the stomach, the esophagus. Because food or liquid in the bronchial tubes or lungs could cause a blockage or lead to an infection, the airway must be protected. The epiglottis is a leaf-like piece of cartilage extending upwards from the larynx. The epiglottis can close down over the larynx when someone is eating or drinking, preventing these substances from entering the airway. In laryngitis, the tissues below the level of the epiglottis are swollen and inflamed. This causes swelling around the area of the vocal cords, so that they cannot vibrate normally. A hoarse sound to the voice is very characteristic of laryngitis. Laryngitis is a very common problem, and often occurs during the course of an upper respiratory tract infection (cold).

Laryngitis
Q:
I’ve heard that some possible causes of laryngitis include cheering at sporting events or allergies. What can I do to heal laryngitis?
A: Laryngitis is a process involving inflammation in the larynx or voice box. The larynx is located in the upper portion of the trachea, the tube through which air passes before reaching the lungs. It is the passage of air during exhalation across the vocal cords located in the larynx that is responsible for one’s ability to vocalize. Hoarseness is the main symptom occurring during laryngitis and is usually due to swelling in the vocal cords due to a variety of causes. Cheering or yelling loudly for a prolonged period of time can cause this problem and is best cured by voice rest, i.e. not talking. Seasonal allergies and the attendant post-nasal drip some experience can also contribute to this problem. Antihistamines and humidified air is helpful to many. The inhalation of toxic gasses can also inflame the larynx. For this reason if you work with solvents or other aerosolized agents, a respirator or other similar mask is a must. Sadly the most common toxic gas inhaled on a large scale is tobacco. Short term exposure is generally not harmful and yet the fact that smoking is the number one cause of cancers of the head of the head and neck is too often forgotten. For this reason, any episode of hoarseness lasting for longer than two or three weeks deserves attention as cancers can present as a nodule easily seen on one’s vocal cords. Direct laryngoscopy is a simple and well-tolerated procedure that allows direct visualization of the vocal cords to determine whether an abnormality exists.

A.
Laryngitis is the inflammation of the larynx, mostly associated with hoarseness or losing your voice. The larynx is located at the top of the airway to the lungs (trachea/windpipe). Many times laryngitis comes from a virus but could also result from a bacterial infection like the common cold, bronchitis, flu and pneumonia.
Some of the symptoms of laryngitis are:
Recent or current upper respiratory infection
Hoarseness
Fever
Swollen lymph nodes or glands in the neck
Resting your voice is suggested to help with the inflammation. A humidifier can address the scratchy throat feeling and decongestants and pain killers may relieve symptoms.
