In 1942, Dr. Harry Klinefelter and his coworkers at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston published a report about nine men who had enlarged breasts, sparse facial and body hair, small testes, and an inability to produce sperm. By the late 1950s, researchers discovered that men with Klinefelter syndrome, as this group of symptoms came to be called, had an extra sex chromosome, XXY instead of the usual male arrangement, XY. Based on these studies, the XXY chromosome arrangement appears to be one of the most common genetic abnormalities known, occurring as frequently as 1 in 500 to 1 in 1,000 male births.

Klinefelter syndrome is a genetic condition occurring only in males caused by a chromosome variation that occurs before a baby is conceived. The scientific term for the problem that occurs prior to conception and causes Klinefelter syndrome is "nondisjunction." The term means that the chromosomes in either the egg or the sperm involved in conception did not separate properly and the baby ends up with an extra X chromosome. People without Klinefelter syndrome have a total of 46 chromosomes and those with Klinefelter syndrome have 47 chromosomes. Men with Klinefelter syndrome have two X chromosomes and one Y chromosome instead of the usual one X and one Y chromosome ( karyotypes The standard method of describing the chromosomes of a person with Klinefelter syndrome is to write 47,XXY. The 47 refers to the fact there are 47 chromosomes present. The XXY indicates that a person with Klinefelter syndrome has two X chromosomes and one Y chromosome. Klinefelter syndrome is a relatively common condition affecting about 1 in every 600 males.

It is a genetic disorder, which occurs at conception. It is only found in males and the chromosomes in the sex line has at least one extra "X". What is Klinefelter syndrome?
Klinefelter syndrome is a chromosomal condition that affects male sexual development. Most males with Klinefelter syndrome have one extra copy of the X chromosome in each cell. Some males with the condition have low levels of the hormone testosterone beginning during puberty, which can lead to breast development (gynecomastia) and an increased risk of breast cancer, reduced facial and body hair, and an inability to father children (infertility). Boys with Klinefelter syndrome may also have difficulty with speech and language development. Variants of Klinefelter syndrome, which involve more than one extra X chromosome or extra copies of both sex chromosomes in each cell, tend to have more severe signs and symptoms. These disorders affect male sexual development but may also include decreased IQ, distinctive facial features, skeletal abnormalities, poor coordination, and more severe problems with speech.

Alternate Names : XXY Syndrome Attribution Klinefelter syndrome is a genetic disorder that occurs in males who have three or more sex chromosomes. At least two of the chromosomes must be X chromosomes, and one must be a Y chromosome. The condition causes males to have some female-like physical features. What is going on in the body? Klinefelter syndrome affects only males. The presence of the Y chromosome assures that male sexual features will be present. Because males with Klinefelter syndrome don't have the normal number of chromosomes, the body's natural balance is upset. The upset in balance leads to:
  • underdevelopment of the testicles, a condition called hypogonadism , which usually leads to infertility a taller-than-average height and a feminine body build
  • Klinefelter syndrome usually does not cause mental retardation , but affected males test slightly lower than their brothers and sisters on IQ testing. They also may have problems talking and hearing.

    Definition
Klinefelter syndrome (KS) is a disorder that occurs in some men who have more than one X chromosome (XXY). Virtually every cell in the body contains chromosomes, which carry the genes that determine many of our physical, intellectual, and emotional characteristics. Klinefelter's Syndrome www.nucleusinc.com
    Causes
Males usually inherit a single X chromosome from their mother and a single Y chromosome from their father. Males with KS get at least one extra X chromosome from either their mother or their father. In most cases there is only one extra chromosome. The extra X chromosome is caused by a biological accident. Normally, an egg has one X chromosome and a sperm has one X or one Y chromosome. Occasionally, an egg may end up with two X chromosomes or a sperm may have both an X and a Y chromosome. When these abnormal eggs are fertilized by a normal sperm, or the abnormal sperm fertilizes a normal egg, the result is a male with two X chromosomes and one Y chromosome (XXY).
    Risk Factors
A risk factor is something that increases your chances of getting a disease or condition. Women over age 35 have a slightly increased chance of having a child with KS. There are no other known risk factors for this disorder.
