SOME INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT KIDNEY STONES
Louis C. Herring Laboratory has analyzed over 4 million calculi, more than all other stone laboratories in the United States combined. The largest known kidney stone weighed 1.36 kilograms. The smallest kidney stones are microscopic crystals; it is possible to analyze stones weighing less than 0.1 mg. Kidney stones come in virtually any color; most are yellow to brown. The shape of the stone may tell something about how it was formed. To date over 200 components have been found in calculi, however, the most common constituents of kidney stones are:
  • Calcium Oxalate Monohydrate (Whewellite) CaC2O4 Calcium Oxalate Dihydrate (Weddellite) CaC2O4-2H2O Magnesium Ammonium Phosphate Hexahydrate (Struvite) MgNH4PO4-2H2O Calcium Phosphate, Carbonate Form (Carbonate Apatite) Ca10(PO4-CO3OH)6(OH)2 Calcium Phosphate, Hydroxyl Form (Hydroxyl Apatite) Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2 Calcium Hydrogen Phosphate Dihydrate (Brushite) CaHPO4-2H2O Uric Acid C5H4N4O3 Cystine (SCH2CH(NH2)-COOH)2 Sodium Acid Urate NaH-C5H2O3N4-H2O Tricalcium Phosphate (Whitlockite) Ca3(PO4)2 Ammonium Acid Urate NH4H-C5H2O3N4-H2O Magnesium Hydrogen Phosphate Trihydrate (Newberyite) MgHPO4-3H2O
  • Most stones are formed and excreted singly.

Kidney stones
Kidney stones are hard, stone-like masses that can form in one or both kidneys. Kidney stones are fairly common, with about one percent of people in Western countries likely to get them. They are often painless when in the kidney but can cause severe pain as they travel from the kidneys to the bladder. They can also cause bleeding or block the flow of urine.
What are kidney stones?
Most people have two kidneys (see illustration below), which "clean" the blood. They filter out water and waste products, making urine.
The urology system Kidney stones are formed out of crystals found in the urine. In most cases, the crystals are too tiny to be noticed, and pass harmlessly out of the body. However, they can build up inside the kidney and form much larger stones. If a stone becomes large enough to block the flow of urine out of the kidney, it can cause pressure, pain and infection. If a stone moves out of the kidney with the flow of urine, it can cause severe pain as it moves through the ureters – the tubes that carry urine from the kidney to the bladder. If a stone gets stuck, an infection can occur. Depending on its size and position, an untreated kidney stone could cause permanent damage to the kidneys.

Kidney Stone
(Renal Stone)
What is a kidney stone?
A kidney stone is a hard mineral and crystalline material formed within the kidney or urinary tract. Kidney stones are a common cause of blood in the urine and pain in the abdomen, flank, or groin. Kidney stones occur in 1 in 20 people at some time in their life. What causes kidney stones?
The development of the stones is related to decreased urine volume or increased excretion of stone-forming components such as calcium, oxalate, urate cystine , xanthine, and phosphate . The stones form in the urine collecting area (the pelvis) of the kidney and may range in size from tiny to staghorn stones the size of the renal pelvis itself. The cystine stones (below) compared in size to a quarter (a U.S. $0.25 coin) were obtained from the kidney of a young woman by percutaneous nephrolithotripsy (PNL), a procedure for crushing and removing the dense stubborn stones characteristic of cystinuria.

Kidney Stones Overview
Sharp, severe pain from kidney stones brings more than 450,000 people to emergency departments every year. Kidney stones are an age-old problem. Egyptian mummies more than 7,000 years old have been found with evidence of kidney stones.
  • Kidney stones are a common problem that will affect 5-15% of people at some time during their lives. Annually, this problem affects 0.2% of people in the United States.
Men tend to have kidney stones 3 times more often than women.
People aged 20-60 years more frequently have kidney stones, and a greater number of people who are sedentary will have them than people who are active.
Kidney stones are relatively uncommon in children younger than 16 years. If your child has a kidney stone, further investigation into possible metabolic disorders, urological problems, or infection should be done.
