Treatment for end stage kidney failure
BACK NEXT Chronic kidney failure often progresses from early stage (partial) to end stage (complete) failure. There is no cure for end-stage renal failure (ESRF) also known as end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The damage done to the kidneys is irreversible. Treatment at the end stage of kidney failure involves replacing the lost functions of your kidneys by dialysis or by a kidney transplant. There are two kinds of dialysis treatment, hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis . Dialysis patients:
  • manage their fluid balance by adjusting what they drink manage the substances such as calcium and other nutrients that their bodies have to deal with by watching their renal diet are tested to monitor the effectiveness of their dialysis
Transplantation is another treatment option. You will learn about the tests used for determining if a patient is suitable for receiving a transplant, and for monitoring a transplant. Dialysis patients are monitored and/or treated by the medical team in a Dialysis center Convenient summaries are provided of:

Introduction
Hello. If you have been diagnosed with the disease of IGA Nephropathy or want to know our story, please continue to read our homepage, and we hope it is beneficial for you. This is our story about our son, Darryl. By telling our story, we feel that God is directing us to give you comfort, peace, and contact and for us this is uplifting. Our story will start at the beginning, then the diagnose, the transplant, the update, and finally the parents.
The Beginning
In 1995 Darryl started his first year of college at Michigan State University (MSU). During the fall of 1997 at a plasma donation center, his urine was tested at a high protein count. It was around an eight count. He felt fine and was physically active. Again and again, he went back to the plasma center and still the protein in his urine was a high count. The center would not draw his plasma.
The Diagnose
After blood labs, ultra sound, and a kidney biopsy, our son was diagnosed with a kidney disease, IGA Nephropathy, March 1998. The nephrologist told us that our son had 48% kidney function. During this revelation, his creatinine was 2.1. Any creatinine level above 1.5 is possibly a kidney problem. Then, he was 22 years old. My husband, Darryl, and I sat there stunned. Usually, IGA is caused by some kind of respiratory infection. Our son did not have any kind of respiratory onset; although, in 1996 and 1997, Michigan State University had a meningitis epidemic. The doctor started him on prednisone and blood pressure medicine to maintain his kidneys and his high blood pressure. After six weeks, the nephrologist made us all an appointment with the Nephrology Department at the University of Michigan Medical Center, Ann Arbor, Michigan. Our son's girlfriend, Eileen, went with us, too. She and her family were great supporters.

Urological Disorders
Urology is the branch of medicine concerned with the urinary tract in both genders, and with the genital tract or reproductive system in the male. Urogenital is a word that refers to the urinary and genital organs. [The medical specialty of Obstetrics and Gynecology specializes in the reproduction (genital) system of females. Nephrology is the medical specialty concerned with the kidneys.] According to the National Kidney Foundation, kidney and urologic diseases affect more than 13 million people (about 5 percent of the US population) and claim about 260,000 lives annually. The number of people affected by these diseases is expected to grow as the populations of older adults and racial and ethnic minorities, groups disproportionately affected by the diseases, increase. The most serious and debilitating of kidney and urinary tract diseases include:
  • end-stage renal disease (ESRD)
  • stone disease
  • urinary incontinence
  • benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)
  • interstitial cystitis
  • urinary tract infection
  • polycystic kidney disease
Other, non-related diseases have a tremendous impact on the disability and death associated with kidney and urologic diseases, including diabetes and hypertension.

A preliminary study, presented at the European Conference on Nutrition and Cancer
20 years of research and scientific studies
show fruits and vegetables help prevent diseases such as stroke and colorectal cancer and vegetables lowers the risk of heart disease.
Karin Michels, Lead researcher of the Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts: "The most important thing I want to get out is they should eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables in spite of all these findings. ...fruits and vegetables definitely protect for other important diseases such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes and potentially other cancers. These are some of the best foods we can eat - there is no doubt about it." (the Journal of the National Cancer Institute)
While most health experts agree that poor eating habits are a major reason why more than half a million of Americans die of cancer each year.

Erectile Dysfunction
On this page: Erectile dysfunction, sometimes called "impotence," is the repeated inability to get or keep an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse. The word "impotence" may also be used to describe other problems that interfere with sexual intercourse and reproduction, such as lack of sexual desire and problems with ejaculation or orgasm. Using the term erectile dysfunction makes it clear that those other problems are not involved. In older men, ED usually has a physical cause, such as disease, injury, or side effects of drugs. Any disorder that causes injury to the nerves or impairs blood flow in the penis has the potential to cause ED. Incidence increases with age: About 5 percent of 40-year-old men and between 15 and 25 percent of 65-year-old men experience ED. But it is not an inevitable part of aging. ED is treatable at any age, and awareness of this fact has been growing. More men have been seeking help and returning to normal sexual activity because of improved, successful treatments for ED. Urologists, who specialize in problems of the urinary tract, have traditionally treated ED; however, urologists accounted for only 25 percent of Viagra mentions in 1999.
