Home Cooked Pet Diets And Nutrition
Ron Hines DVM PhD 6/28/04 Home cooked diets for dogs and cats can be made to meet the needs of a large group of veterinary patients. Home cooked diets for dogs and cats are time consuming but rewarding. Almost any diet for dogs and cats that can be purchased ready made can also be cooked at home. Home cooked diets often taste better to dogs and cats than ready made diets. Large batches of home cooked dets for dogs and cats can be frozen and thawed when needed. Specialty diets are a viable alternative for pets with heart, kidney, urinary tract, diabetes and obesity problems; as well as for intestinal problems and allergic skin disease in dogs cats and other pets. For obvious reasons, most pet owners prefer buying these products prepared through commercial suppliers such as VetCentric (www.pethealthcenter.org). However, should you desire, similar diets can be prepared at home. A diet suitable for cats and dogs with certain lower urinary tract problems Oxalate stones form in an acid urine. They tend to reoccur and often have to be removed surgically. Although I have no experience formulating diets to prevent oxalate stone formation

Kidney Cancer Treatment and Research
at the National Cancer Institute
Carcinoma of the kidney affects some 27,000 individuals in the United States each year. Until recently relatively little attention was paid to the genetics and histology of renal carcinomas. In the past 10 years major advances have been made in the understanding of the genetic basis of human kidney cancer. The National Cancer Institute has become a leading center for research on the genetic basis of kidney cancer. We created this Web page to detail the research (with the very latest described in the "What's New" page), as well as the members of the multidisciplinary team of clinicians and scientists at the National Cancer Institute who study and treat patients with kidney cancer. We wish to inform the public of the Familial Kidney Tumor Program based at the National Cancer Institute in the hopes of encouraging persons having more than one family member afflicted with kidney cancer to register their families.

On this page:
What is celiac disease?
Celiac disease is a digestive disease that damages the small intestine and interferes with absorption of nutrients from food. People who have celiac disease cannot tolerate a protein called gluten, found in wheat, rye, and barley. Gluten is found mainly in foods, but is also found in products we use every day and even some medicines. Intestine Villi on the lining of the small intestine help absorb nutrients. When people with celiac disease eat foods or use products containing gluten, their immune system responds by damaging the small intestine. The tiny, fingerlike protrusions lining the small intestine are damaged or destroyed. Called villi, they normally allow nutrients from food to be absorbed into the bloodstream. Without healthy villi, a person becomes malnourished, regardless of the quantity of food eaten. Because the body's own immune system causes the damage, celiac disease is considered an autoimmune disorder. However, it is also classified as a disease of malabsorption because nutrients are not absorbed. Celiac disease is also known as celiac sprue, nontropical sprue, and gluten-sensitive enteropathy.

Anatomy
Nephron Formation of Urine Urination ... Thirst
The kidneys are very important organs within the human body. They guard blood volume, filter the blood and form urine, regulate water, electrolyte and acid base balance, produce some small hormones and participate in the metabolism of others. At rest, an estimated 20% of cardiac output (~1000ml/minute) flows through the kidneys where it is filtered and reconditioned.
The kidneys have a major role in maintaining an internal environment that is compatible with life. These small organs must keep fluids, minerals (such as calcium and magnesium), and electrolytes (such as sodium and potassium) in balance while excreting waste products in the urine. One of the main tasks is to keep an appropriate amount of water in the body. Approximately 50-70% of body weight is attributed to water. The water is distributed between two compartments, that which is inside the cells (~2/3rds) and that which is outside the cells (~1/3rd). The water outside of the cells is further divided between the blood and tissues . Tissue fluid and blood plasma contain about the same electrolyte composition but plasma contains a large amount of protein. All of these compartments are in balance with each other, so that changes in one eventually causes changes in the others. Abnormalities in fluid distribution (such as edema) are associated with some common

Often called CRF Chronic Renal Failure, it is seen most often in the older dog or cat. Kidney failure has it origins in a wide variety of causes. For example, some animals are born with poorly constructed or functioning kidneys and never reach totally optimum health. Eventually, these individuals usually fall into kidney failure at an early age. Another type of kidney failure can occur after accidental ingestion of antifreeze that contains ethylene glycol. These situations cause sudden and often irreversible renal (kidney) failure. Quite commonly, kidney failure results from low grade, long term (chronic) inflammation of kidney tissues called chronic nephritis ; the damage caused by this inflammation renders permanent damage to delicate renal tissues that are not able to repair themselves or heal as some other body tissues do. Eventually, not enough normal functioning tissue remains to support the body's need for metabolic regulation and waste elimination. The dog or cat becomes UREMIC, a condition where body waste material builds up in the blood. These toxins promote vomiting, poor appetite, depression, and eventually death. Bacterial invasion of the kidneys is a common cause of chronic nephritis and kidney failure.

Kidney Transplant
End-Stage Renal Disease
End-stage renal disease is the name for kidney failure so advanced that it cannot be reversed ("renal" is another word for kidney). The name is appropriate: the kidneys in end-stage renal disease function so poorly that they can no longer keep you alive. End-stage renal disease cannot be treated with conventional medical treatments such as drugs. Only 2 treatments allow you to continue living when your kidneys stop functioning: dialysis and kidney transplantation.
  • Dialysis is the term for several different methods of artificially filtering the blood. People who require dialysis are kept alive but give up some degree of their freedom because of their dialysis schedule, fragile health, or both.
Kidney transplantation means replacement of the failed kidneys with a working kidney from another person, called a donor. Kidney transplantation is not a complete cure, although many people who receive a kidney transplant are able to live much as they did before their kidneys failed. People who receive a transplant must take medication and be monitored by a physician who specializes in kidney disease (nephrologist) for the rest of their lives.
The National Kidney Foundation estimates that about 350,000 people in the United States have end-stage renal disease and about 67,000 people die of kidney failure every year.
