Do you want to know more about Kidney Cancer? Kidney Cancer is also commonly known as Renal Cancer or Renal Cell Carcinoma. The Basics: Function of kidneys?
The kidneys are paired organs, which are located within the abdomen. The primary function of the kidneys is to clear blood of waste products, salts and excess water. The filtered material is eventually lost as urine.
What is a cancer?
A cancer is a disease where cells begin to divide abnormally and uncontrolled. Such cancers cells are able to spread to other parts of the body. Kidney Cancer: Renal cell carcinoma is the most common form of kidney cancer. 90% of malignant tumours of the kidney (kidney cancers) are Renal Cell Carcinomas. This is where renal cells divide uncontrollably to give a mass within the kidneys. They are capable of spreading to other organs and once this happens treatment becomes difficult. In most cases a tumour develops in one kidney only however kidney cancers can occur in both kidneys simultaneously. Generally it is observed that the earlier the diagnosis is made in someone who has a kidney cancer the better their chance of survival. What is Kidney Cancer? Alternative Names: Renal Cell Carcinoma Renal Cancer Hypernephroma Adenocarcinoma of Renal Cells Renal cell carcinoma affects about 3 in 10,000 people, resulting in about 31,000 new cases in the US per year. Every year, about 12,000 people in the US die from renal cell carcinoma. It is more common in men than women, usually affecting men older than 55. Why the cells become cancerous is not known. A history of smoking greatly increases the risk for developing renal cell carcinoma. Some people may also have inherited an increased risk to develop renal cell carcinoma, and a family history of kidney cancer increases the risk. People with von Hippel-Lindau disease, a hereditary disease that affects the capillaries of the brain, commonly also develop renal cell carcinoma. Kidney disorders that require dialysis for treatment also increase the risk for developing renal cell carcinoma.

What is Kidney Cancer?
The two kidneys lie at the back of the tummy, next to the spine. Kidneys form urine that contains some of the toxins produced by the body. The urine drains from the kidneys into ureters and then into the bladder. From the bladder, urine is passed out of the body. The cells that make up the kidney can become cancerous. How common is Kidney Cancer?
Kidney cancer accounts for less than one percent of all cancers. It is more common in men than in women and mainly detected in middle-aged persons. Symptoms and Signs of Kidney Cancer
A doctor should be seen if urine has blood in it. A lump may also appear in one side of the tummy associated with pain or discomfort. There may also be weight loss or fever. Diagnostic Tests
If kidney cancer is suspected, a computer scan is done to look at the kidneys in detail. This will confirm the diagnosis in most patients. In doubtful cases, other diagnostic tests, such as studying the blood supply of the tumour (angiogram) or removing a small piece of tissue from the tumour to look at under a microscope, may be needed.

Kidney Cancer The first Department of Urology in the United States was formed in 1877 by NYU physicians at Bellevue Hospital. More than a century later, our doctors are building on this history by translating advances from laboratory and clinical research into better care for patients. Their goal: to provide the most effective treatment while ensuring an optimal quality of life for each patient. Doctors at the NYU Cancer Institute take a multidisciplinary approach to kidney cancer. Surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, and researchers meet at a biweekly conference to discuss each patient and tailor a personalized treatment program. They gather again during other weeks to review the latest research findings and discuss how these new results might be used to improve patient care. New laboratory technologies are constantly introduced, ensuring state-of-the-art care for all patients. NYU Cancer Institute, 550 First Avenue, New York, NY 10016

Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) Family Alliance
Kidney Cancer and VHL from the VHL Family Forum , newsletter of the VHL Family Alliance, June 1994 Von Hippel-Lindau disease is a hereditary condition involving the deactivation of one tumor-suppressor gene, the VHL gene. This flaw in the body's normal tumor-suppression system causes a series of tumors in various parts of the body throughout a person's life. One of the kinds of tumors which may be involved are tumors of the kidney, which are cancer. Deactivation of the VHL gene has been shown to be involved in the majority of cases of sporadic renal cell carcinoma (RCC) as well. But in VHL, an inherited form of kidney cancer, there are three important differences: (1) it is normal to see cysts and tumors on both sides in VHL; (2) the tumors follow a different behavior pattern than sporadic RCC, and (3) there may be other tumors in other parts of the body which also need attention. If the patient in fact has VHL, not sporadic RCC, then this treatment might be less aggressive, other family members may be at risk, and this patient and other at-risk family members might be screened proactively to avoid the worst consequences of other tumors in the body.

A simple urine test could one day be used to diagnose kidney cancer.
Scientists from Fox Chase Cancer Center in the United States say DNA from the disease can be found in urine. They carried out tests on 50 people with the disease. They found cancer DNA in the urine of 44. The DNA disappeared when they patients were cured. Speaking at the American Urological Association's annual meeting in San Francisco, they said the test may be a simple way to diagnose the disease. Rates soaring The number of people being diagnosed with kidney cancer has increased sharply over the past 20 years. Almost 6,000 people in the UK are told they have the disease each year. A simple urine test for kidney cancer would certainly be welcome
Professor Nick James,
Cancer Research UK However, rates vary considerably between different countries. They are much higher in affluent western countries than they are in developing countries.

Kidney cancer accounts for about 2 to 3% of cancers in adults, affecting twice as many men as women. Smokers are about twice as likely to develop kidney cancer as nonsmokers. Other risk factors include exposure to toxic chemicals and obesity. For unknown reasons, between 1975 and 1995, the rate of new kidney cancers rose 2 to 4% per year. People affected are usually between 50 and 70 years of age. Most solid kidney tumors are cancerous, but fluid-filled tumors (cysts) generally are not. Almost all kidney cancer is renal cell carcinoma. Another kind of kidney cancer, Wilms' tumor, occurs in children. Symptoms and Diagnosis
Blood in the urine is the most common first symptom, but the amount of blood may be so small that it can be detected only under a microscope. On the other hand, the urine may be visibly red. The next most common symptoms are pain in the flank (the area between the ribs and hip), fever, and weight loss. Sometimes kidney cancer is first detected when a doctor feels an enlargement or lump in the abdomen, or a cancer may be discovered by chance during evaluation of another problem, such as high blood pressure. If the cancer interferes with the blood supply to part or all of the kidney, an enzyme called renin is released, which leads to an increase in blood pressure.

Cancer InDepth: Kidney Cancer
by Debra Wood, RN Kidney cancer, also called renal cancer, refers to a malignancy that originates in the kidneys. The kidneys are organs that filter the blood to remove liquid waste products and produce urine. Humans have two kidneys, a left and a right. The body can function with only one kidney. Kidney cancer occurs when cells in the kidney divide without control or order. Normally, cells divide in a regulated manner. If cells keep dividing uncontrollably when new cells are not needed, a mass of tissue forms, called a growth or tumor. The term cancer refers to malignant tumors, which can invade nearby tissues and can spread to other parts of the body. A benign tumor does not invade or spread. Different types of cancer can develop in the kidneys. The most common is renal cell carcinoma. The types of renal cell cancer are differentiated by cell type. They include clear cell, papillary, chromophobe, collecting duct, and unclassified. The other types of cancer that can develop in the kidneys are transitional cell carcinoma, which is similar to bladder cancer and treated like that disease; Wilms tumors, found in children; and renal sarcomas.
Who Is Affected
Each year, according to the American Cancer Society, about 30,800 Americans learn they have kidney cancer, and about 12,100 will die from the disease. More men than women develop kidney cancer. Most cases occur in people aged 50 to 70, but it can develop in children as well as adults of any age. About half of all cases are detected before the cancer has spread and half after it has invaded tissues near the kidney or in other parts of the body. The number of people who develop kidney cancer has increased during the past 20 years.
