Treatment of Kidney Cancer at Mayo Clinic in Rochester
(Synonyms: renal cell cancer, renal cell carcinoma, kidney tumor, renal mass, hypernephroma, bilateral kidney cancer, bilateral renal cell cancer, bilateral renal cell carcinoma, bilateral kidney tumor, bilateral renal mass, bilateral hypernephroma, cancer of the kidney) Renal cell cancer is the most common form of kidney cancer. In the United States, about 30,000 new cases of renal cell cancer are detected each year. Surgery is the only curative treatment for localized renal cell cancer. In the year 2001, an estimated 30,800 Americans were diagnosed with renal cell cancer (kidney cancer) and 12,100 Americans died of this disease. Mayo Clinic physicians have been leaders in the development of kidney-sparing surgery to treat kidney cancer, offering patients an option other than having their kidney removed.
    Treatment Options
    Radical Nephrectomy
Traditionally, renal cell cancer has been surgically treated removing both the diseased kidney and the neighboring adrenal gland a procedure known as radical nephrectomy. This procedure became the standard at a time when kidney cancer was rarely detected before it was relatively advanced. The diagnosis was usually made after the development of symptoms, such as flank pain, blood in the urine, or a mass or lump in the abdomen or flank.

Symptoms of kidney cancer may include:
    • blood in the urine (gross hematuria) pain in the flank or midsection below the ribs a lump or mass that can be felt trouble breathing (dyspnea) and cough seizure and headache bone pain
    Diagnosis
Several tests may be used to determine if a patient has kidney cancer and the status of the disease. Tests may include:
    • Blood tests CT scan Ultrasound MRI IVU (Intravenous urography) Renal angiography Radionuclide imaging Fine-needle aspiration Instrumental and cytologic exam
    Treatment Options

Smokers are about twice as likely to develop kidney cancer as nonsmokers. Other risk factors include exposure to toxic chemicals and obesity. For unknown reasons, between 1975 and 1995, the rate of new kidney cancers rose 2 to 4% per year. People affected are usually between 50 and 70 years of age. Most solid kidney tumors are cancerous, but fluid-filled tumors (cysts) generally are not. Almost all kidney cancer is renal cell carcinoma. Another kind of kidney cancer, Wilms' tumor, occurs in children (see

Kidney Cancer, Options, Cryosurgery Operation, Recovery A biographical report of my Kidney Cancer Cryosurgical treatment. By Kenneth Henley. Revised 8th May 2004 To contact me email: Ken Henley Home Page My Kidney Cancer Consultations ... Directory of Related Links I was one of the fortunate Kidney Cancer sufferers whose condition was diagnosed at an early stage which means that it is treatable. I will explore on this site the options that was available to me and the one I decided to take along with my reasons. My options were restricted due to my age of 80 years, I also discuss age ramifications. There is a good chance of full recovery if the cancer is discovered before it grows to 6cm. Above that size it starts to spread. RCC is difficult to treat and rarely cured once it has spread beyond the Kidney and current therapies have limited efficacy. In the conclusions I summarize my decision to have my cancer removed by cryosurgery and my operation which successfully killed the cancer. In the past, RCCs were diagnosed only after they had become quite large or symptoms of flank pain, blood in the urine, or palpable mass in the abdomen developed. But fortunately, most RCC are now found incidentally (during evaluation of unrelated medical problems) by imaging studies such as ultrasound, CAT scan, or MRI. The recently observed rising incidence of RCC may not be solely due to increased use of imaging studies but a trend toward increased detection of small lesions that are surgically curable has been noted.

It may be an activity, such as smoking, diet, family history, or many other things. Different diseases, including cancers, have different risk factors. Although these factors can increase a person's risk, they do not necessarily cause the disease. Some people with one or more risk factors never develop the disease, while others develop disease and have no known risk factors.

      Overview
To Learn More About This Topic: Chat with Us Email Us Each year, more than 28,000 people in the United States learn that they have kidney cancer. Several types of cancer can develop in the kidney. Renal cell cancer is the most common form of kidney cancer in adults. Transitional cell cancer (carcinoma), which affects the renal pelvis, is a less common form of kidney cancer. It is similar to cancer that occurs in the bladder and is often treated like bladder cancer As kidney cancer grows, it may invade organs near the kidney, such as the liver, colon, or pancreas. Kidney cancer cells may also break away from the original tumor and spread (metastasize) to other parts of the body. When kidney cancer spreads, cancer cells may appear in the lymph nodes. For this reason, lymph nodes near the kidney may be removed during surgery. If a pathologist finds cancer cells in your lymph nodes, it may mean that the disease has spread to other parts of the body. Kidney cancer may spread and form new tumors, most often in the bones or lungs. The new tumors have the same kind of abnormal cells and the same name as the original (primary) tumor in the kidney. For example, if kidney cancer spreads to the lungs, the cancer cells in the lungs are kidney cancer cells. The disease is metastatic kidney cancer; it is not lung cancer.

Kidney cancer usually affects people over 50. Men are more likely to develop the disease than women, and smokers are more likely to develop it than non-smokers. Kidney cancer accounts for just over 2% of all new cancers diagnosed in the UK. The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs on either side of the spine just above the waist. Their main function is to filter blood and rid the body of excess water, salt and waste products. About four in five cases of kidney cancer affect the tubes inside the kidney that carry out this filtering. A rare form of kidney cancer is Wilms tumour, which occurs in childhood. If kidney cancer is not treated, cancer cells can break away from the original site and spread to other parts of the body. Risk factors

    Kidney Cancer
Renal cell carcinoma, a form of kidney cancer that involves cancerous changes in the cells of the renal tubule, is the most common type of kidney cancer in adults. Causes, Incidence, And Risk Factors of Kidney Cancer: Kidney cancer affects about 3 in 10,000 people, resulting in about 31,000 new cases in the US per year. Every year, about 12,000 people in the US die from kidney cancer. It is more common in men than women, usually affecting men older than 55. Why the cells become cancerous and people develop kidney cancer is not known. A history of smoking greatly increases the risk for developing kidney cancer. Some people may also have inherited an increased risk to develop kidney cancer, and a family history of kidney cancer increases the risk. People with von Hippel-Lindau disease, a hereditary disease that affects the capillaries of the brain, commonly also develop kidney disorders. Kidney disorders that require dialysis for treatment also increase the risk for developing kidney cancer. The first symptom of kidney cancer is usually blood in the urine. Sometimes both kidneys are involved. The kidney cancer metastasizes (spreads) easily, most often to the lungs and other organs, and about one-third of patients have metastasis at the time of diagnosis.
