Rh incompatibility
Definition: Rh incompatibility is a condition which develops when there is a difference in Rh blood type between that of the pregnant mother (Rh negative) and that of the fetus (Rh positive).
Alternative Names: Kernicterus; Rh-induced hemolytic disease of the newborn; Hydrops fetalis
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: During pregnancy, red blood cells from the fetus can get into the mother's bloodstream as she nourishes her child through the placenta. If the mother is Rh negative, her system cannot tolerate the presence of Rh positive red blood cells. In such cases, the mother's immune system treats the Rh positive fetal cells as if they were a foreign substance and makes

Rh incompatibility
Definition
Rh incompatibility is a condition which develops when a pregnant woman has an Rh-negative blood type and the fetus she carries has Rh-positive blood type.
Alternative Names
Rh-induced hemolytic disease of the newborn; Hydrops fetalis
Causes
During pregnancy, red blood cells from the fetus can get into the mother's bloodstream as she nourishes her child through the placenta. If the mother is Rh-negative, her system cannot tolerate the presence of Rh-positive red blood cells. In such cases, the mother's immune system treats the Rh-positive fetal cells as if they were a foreign substance and makes antibodies against the fetal blood cells. These anti-Rh antibodies may cross the placenta into the fetus, where they destroy the fetus's circulating red blood cells. First-born infants are often not affected unless the mother has had previous miscarriages or abortions, which could have sensitized her system as it takes time for the mother to develop antibodies against the fetal blood. However, second children who are also Rh-positive may be harmed.
Rh incompatibility can cause symptoms ranging from very mild to fatal. In its mildest form, Rh incompatibility causes hemolysis (destruction of the red blood cells) with the release of free

    NEONATAL HYPOGLYCAEMIA
Neonatal Hypoglycaemia is a condition that can cause damage to the brain and subsequent physical and mental impairment. There is an increased risk shortly after birth for children of insulin dependent mothers, babies with growth retardation, preterm and asphyxiated infants. Doctors often do not recognize the symptoms of neonatal hypoglycaemia and as a result do not take appropriate action to prevent brain damage.

The mission of the Kernicterus Research and Prevention Center (KRPC) is to eliminate kernicterus in babies born in New Jersey. The objectives of the KRPC are: To study the epidemiology and risk factors for severe neonatal jaundice and kernicterus To develop and implement a surveillance system for severe neonatal jaundice To organize medical and community educational programs on the prevention and treatment of severe neonatal jaundice
To organize support programs for the families of children with kernicterus KRPC is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

    NEONATAL JAUNDICE
Approximately 60 percent of newborn babies develop a yellowish coloration of the skin, which is the result of deposition of bilirubin (a yellow pigment).
In most newborn babies, jaundice is a normal (physiological) event usually seen around the second or third day of life. It disappears after a few days, often without any special treatment.
Risk Factors for High Bilirubin Levels
High bilirubin level prior to hospital discharge
Jaundice observed in the first 24 hours
    Blood group incompatibility
Gestational age less than 37 weeks
Previous sibling received phototherapy/family history of jaundice
    East Asian ethnicity
    Presence of bruising or cephalhematoma
However, high bilirubin levels can occur in babies without these risk factors, and they occur after the infant is discharged from the hospital.
    Dangers of High Bilirubin
The early symptoms of brain injury are poor feeding, decreased alertness, alteration of muscle tone, and a high-pitched cry. Later symptoms of bilirubin toxicity include shrill cry, inability to feed, mild or deep stupor, abnormal or uncoordinated movements, visual or hearing abnormalities and dental enamel defects.

There are a number of neonatal medical conditions that may arise shortly after a child is born that if not treated quickly and effectively can place the child at serious risk of permanent disability or even death. Healthcare professionals including consultants, doctors, midwives and nurses should be vigilant in the early part of a child’s life and should be aware of the warning signs of these problems. Failure to act appropriately and in a timely manner may mean that they are negligent and liable to pay compensation for any harm suffered by the child as a result of their inaction. Most children will qualify for full Legal Aid, with no financial contribution, to take action for damages. Only the child's income if any is taken into account even though the parents may have considerable income and assets. Some of the most serious neonatal conditions that give rise to claims for compensation include:
    • Hip Dysplasia Neonatal Hypoglycaemia is a condition that results in lower than normal concentrations of glucose in an infants blood stream which can cause damage to the brain and subsequent impairment. Certain children are at increased risk during the early hours and days after birth including infants of insulin dependent mothers, infants with growth retardation, pre-term and asphyxiated infants. Whilst doctors often recognise babies as ‘hypoglycaemic’ from basic test results, if the symptoms of neonatal hypoglycaemia are not present they often do not recognise the extent to which the child is suffering and as a result do not take appropriate action to prevent brain damage.
