Temporomandibular Joint Disorders Topic Tree Definition:
A variety of conditions affecting the anatomic and functional characteristics of the temporomandibular joint. Factors contributing to the complexity of temporomandibular diseases are its relation to dentition and mastication and the symptomatic effects in other areas which account for referred pain to the joint and the difficulties in applying traditional diagnostic procedures to temporomandibular joint pathology where tissue is rarely obtained and x-rays are often inadequate or nonspecific. Common diseases are developmental abnormalities, trauma, subluxation, luxation, arthritis, and neoplasia. (From Thoma's Oral Pathology, 6th ed, pp577-600) Synonyms and Source Vocabularies:

    Who are we:
The Hypermobility Syndrome Association (HMSA) is a charity run by and for people diagnosed with the Hypermobility Syndrome (HMS).
    What we do:
The HMSA aims to provide support and information to those affected by the Syndrome and to promote knowledge and understanding within the medical community and the public at large. We hope to assist sufferers to come to terms with the HMS and the distress that it can cause. The severity of the effects of HMS varies with the individual: some have few symptoms others are severely affected. HMS is an 'invisible illness' and because of this we can look well to the outside world but are often in severe pain. Moreover the nature of hypermobile joints combined with frail tissues means that we are prone to injury when performing simple everyday tasks. This opens us to skepticism, particularly by those in the medical profession who know little about HMS. The pain, stress and frustration can lead to depression: thus depression can often be mistaken as the cause of the illness, not a result of it. We work closely with those in the medical community with a special interest in HMS. Through our newsletters we aim to provide members with updates on the developments and issues within the medical community. As patients we need as much current and useful information as is available.

Definition of Condition: TMJD is a collective term comprising a number of clinical problems that involve the masticatory musculature, the TMJ, or both. Issue Statement: It is recognized that the TMJ can sustain injury as a result of work related trauma. Many TMJ injuries are associated with non-work related disorders. The TMJ is a synovial joint that is subject to the same pathological conditions that affect other joints in the body. Therefore, before a claim is accepted, a thorough medical history, dental history, and pre-existing TMJ status assessment must be obtained, as well as a non-occupational (e.g. recreational/hobby/leisure) and occupational history. • the worker sustains a traumatic injury such as whiplash injury, fall, knock, or blow etc. to the head, neck or TMJ area (see whiplash guideline)

    OBJECTIVE
We are seeking Concept Clearance for a Request for Applications (RFA). The purpose of this initiative is to stimulate cross cutting, integrative research aimed at delineating the mechanisms underlying the etiology and pathogenesis of the orofacial structures associated with Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMJDs). The ultimate goal of this initiative is a systems approach, from the gene, molecule, cell to tissue and organ, that will provide the basis to better understand TMJDs and lead to the development of new insights into treatment and management of these disorders. In the context of this initiative, integrative research is defined as the combined use of approaches from several different scientific disciplines such as cell biology, physiology, neurobiology, neuroendocrinology, genetics, molecular biology and imaging technologies to probe developmental, neurological, endocrine, immune and other relevant systems. Briefly, the initiative will focus on:

Print View Titel Gewrichtsaandoeningen en botgenezing Abstract During the last decade orthopedic surgery has made an enormous progress. This is mainly based on clinical research. For a long time the research of our department has concentrated on clinical research concerning fractures, posttraumatic deformity, joint disorders and bone healing. Over the last years the aim of our research programme has been to supply a scientific basis for orthopedic surgery. Clinical research is concentrated on prospective randomized trials to improve diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for several joint disorders. Development of instruments and operative techniques are based on anatomic studies and mechanical testing. Mechano-biological processes, and mechanical bone quality and adaptation of bone to endoprotheses are studied. This includes the role of fibrous tissues around implants. A main part of the study is directed towards bone healing. Apart from prospective trials the anchondral ossification is studied in vitro. Period 05/2002 - unknown Related organisations

A strong commitmet has been made by the Vaderbilt Center or Craniofacial Treatment to the surgical correction of TMJ dysfunction. For many patients surgery and total joint reconstruction can make significant progress to relieve chronic pain. This pain is present in the preauricular region and can radiate to the top of the head, down to the mandible or to the side of the neck. What is TMJ and what are its symptoms?
Many patients in our society suffer from TMJ disorders without even knowing it. Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) dysfunction refers to the pain that develops around the jaw and its associated muscles. The TMJ disorder can make speaking, chewing, swallowing, and facial expressions strained and uncomfortable. In fact, chronic pain, which among other things can be cause by TMJ, is the third largest health problem in the United States. Approximately 40 percent of all chronic pain syndromes are concentrated in the head and neck areas. Jaw pain, muscle tension, and the clicking, popping, or grating of the jaw are all signs of TMJ. The Temporomandibular joint, located directly in front of the ear, consists of two bonesthe skull bone and the jawbone. Positioned between these two bones is a shock absorber-like disc known as the intra-articular disc. This disc provides smooth, quiet, harmonious movement during the opening and closing of the mouth, and it also acts as a cushion against heavy forces generated by strong jaw muscles. As the mouth opens and closes, the disc moves and glides along, forward and backward in synchrony, always holding its position between each bony structure. Problems arise, though, when the relationship among the teeth, muscles, and joints changes. Such conditions lead to TMJ dysfunction.
