(tinea cruris) BASICS
Jock itch is a fungal infection that typically causes raised, red, extremely itchy, sharply defined lesions on the groin and may extend into the buttocks, inner thigh and external genitalia. Because they need heat and moisture to grow, fungal infections are commonly found in areas where skin folds, but may be found on any part of the body. Warm weather and tight clothing (which hold moisture and sweat) encourage fungal growth. A fungal infection may be found on another part of the body and be referred to by another name such as ringworm. (Don't worry, there are not worms involved; the name came about before scientists were able to identify the true source of infection.) Diagnosis of a fungal infection is made by a health care provider and may involve taking a skin scraping for microscopic examination or culture. Other conditions may look similar to a fungal infection. If you decide to self diagnose and treat, seek medical attention if there is no improvement within one or two weeks, or if the condition worsens. Transmission may occur by direct contact, (transfer by touch of one infected area to another, either on yourself, another person, or even a dog or cat) or by direct contact with a contaminated article, such as towels or bed linen.

How to Treat Jock Itch
Jock itch is caused by a fungus called Tinea cruris that infects the groin, the inner thighs and sometimes even the buttocks. Treat jock itch and then be meticulous in trying to prevent its return. Steps: Apply an over-the-counter antifungal cream three times a day, or as directed in the product instructions, to get rid of the fungus. Treatment must continue for three to four weeks or the fungus will reappear. For a severe or persistent infection, see your doctor and discuss the possibility of topical and/or oral anti-fungal medication. Apply an antifungal powder containing miconazole when chafing aggravates jock itch. Wear a jock strap, or athletic supporter, to keep your genitals away from the rest of your skin. Keep groin area clean and dry.

How to Prevent Jock Itch
You don't have to be an athlete to get "jock itch." The condition is caused by a fungus that is aggravated by friction and sweat. Steps: Keep your genital area clean. Shower after workouts. Dry your genital area thoroughly after showering or bathing. Dab talcum powder around your genital area, and where your leg folds meet your groin. Avoid powders containing cornstarch. Change your underwear frequently. Even if you wear 100 percent cotton underpants, sweat causes a buildup of moisture, which collects against your skin. Avoid swimming trunks with elasticized liners. The elastic bands in the liners can cause chafing and irritation. Avoid nylon underwear. Remove wet bathing suits as soon as possible. Wear loose-fitting pants and underwear.

Preventing recurrence
There are practices that can help reduce the risk of recurrence. Bear in mind that fungus can be very resilient both on the body and on clothing. To eliminate it permanently may require diligence. A long term or serious fungal infection may inflame the skin and make it more prone to sweating, and hence more ideal for recurrence.

Tinea: Ringworm, Jock Itch, and Athlete's Foot
Ringworm Tinea capis is usually called ringworm, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). Like most tinea infections, as it grows it spreads out in a circle leaving normal looking skin in between. That makes it look like a ring. At the edge, the skin will be red, raised and scaly. Some people think it looks like a worm under the skin and that's where the name "ringworm" comes from. There is no worm under the skin, though. Instead it is a fungus growing on the skin. If it's in the scalp, the hair can be destroyed, leaving bald patches. Jock Itch Tinea cruris is commonly referred to as jock itch according to AAFP. The fungus grows in the warm, moist area around the groin. It generally occurs in men and particularly in athletes because of the sweating they do. Athlete's Foot Tinea pedis is the term for athlete's foot. Once again it's a fungal infection, this time of the feet. It usually shows up as redness and scaling between the toes. The fungus grows in the warm moist atmosphere when feet aren't dried off or when they get very sweaty. You can pick up the fungus in the locker room but it's harder than you think and you can avoid it by drying your feet well. The fungus can also infect the toenails. Treatments Most tinea infections can be treated with a topical cream. Sometimes however oral medications will be needed. Treatment can last for months to fully get rid of the infection. No one is sure why people get tinea versicolor; however with other tinea infections, the best defense is a good offense.

Tinea cruris, known as "jock itch" or "jock rot," is a fungal infection caused by wearing clothes that are too tight or do not let air circulate. It usually occurs in damp, dark areas such as folds of the skin, especially in people who are overweight or if you sweat a lot from hot, humid weather or while exercising. It causes burning, redness, soreness, and itching on the genitals and the inside of the thighs.
Rubbing cornstarch on the affected area helps but sometimes a prescribed medication might be needed. Other things you can do include keeping the area clean and dry, washing your clothes frequently, and avoiding tight-fitting clothes. Don't try to wash it away - you might make it worse. You can buy over-the-counter medications for jock itch. These medications should contain the ingredient miconazole.
