J ock itch is caused by a fungus that lives on your skin. The name of the fungus is Tinea cruris, and is related to the athlete's foot fungus. Jocks aren't the only ones who get jock itch - men who sweat a lot can also get it, and sometimes women too. This fungus likes to grow and live in the warm, moist parts of the genital area, particularly the insides of the thighs. The rash makes the area itch, causes the skin to become red and sometimes crack or peel. Y ou can help prevent jock itch by keeping the area clean and dry. Take time to dry your genital area and inner thighs after showering, bathing, or swimming. Make sure that your gym clothes or sports uniform fits you correctly and doesn't irritate the skin in the genital area. If you wear an athletic supporter, be sure to wash it often. T o help prevent jock itch, you can put cornstarch or special drying powders on the area a few times a day (these are both available over-the-counter). To treat jock itch, you can buy sprays or creams that are also available at a drugstore over-the-counter. In some cases, your health care provider may need to prescribe stronger medication to kill the fungus either a cream, a spray, or a pill.

Jock itch may spread to the anus, causing anal itching and discomfort.

The infected area is somewhere below and on the sides of the scrotum and the middle portion of the penis. Is it recommended to use hydrogen peroxide to clean the infected area prior to using anti-fungal creams? Please answer ASAP. Thanks. Dear Reader, Tineus cruris, a.k.a., jock itch, is one of several maladies producing irritation in the groin that's the source of prolonged, embarrassing, and not-very-humorous discomfort. Caused by dermatophytes, mold-like fungi whose idea of a dream home is a moist, confined area of skin, jock itch primarily affects people, usually men, who provide such accommodations in the form of sweaty crotches. Particularly at risk are folks who frequent public showers and locker rooms, where thriving fungi have their heyday among damp towels, smelly jock straps, and wet floors. Dermatophytes are also responsible for the other common scourges of gym-goers and athletes, body ringworm and athlete's foot, which sometimes appear concurrently with jock itch. Keep in mind that itching and rashes in the groin area, and especially on the genitals, are often not caused by jock itch, and may be the result of something requiring medical attention, such as a yeast infection or sexually transmitted disease (STD). Consult a health care provider for a correct diagnosis because treatments will vary depending on what you have. Having said that, the symptoms of jock itch are:

Originally Published: January 28, 2005 Hey Alice, If a guy has jock itch, can it be passed on to a woman in the form of a yeast infection during sexual intercourse? I had intercourse with a guy and he had jock itch. A few days later I got a vaginal yeast infection. Could there be a connection? Dear Reader, Even though it seems as though there is a connection between the yeast infection you have and this guy's jock itch, the two are coincidental, since there is no definite causal relationship between the two. Jock itch is caused by organisms called dermatophytes, which include a group of fungi that normally infects the top layer of dead skin, nails, and hair. Trichophyton rubrum , one of the most common fungi producing jock itch, is unlike the fungus Candida albicans , which often causes vaginal fungal infections and can grow on skin, mucous membrane, and/or internal tissue. The lay term for fungal infections is yeast infections. Candida albicans is normally present in the vagina, but causes a yeast infection when it multiplies sufficiently to produce symptoms. Reasons for this excessive growth are:

Tinea Cruris I. Definition: "Jock itch" refers to any itching groin rash of men. There are many causes of jock itch; when it is caused by a fungus, the rash is known as tinea cruris. The fungus causing tinea cruris prefers moist, warm skin; this is why tinea cruris favors the groin area and is often worse in hot weather. Not all groin rashes are tinea cruris, only those caused by fungus growing on the skin. II. Causes:
  • Tinea cruris is caused by a fungus. Tinea cruris is not contagious; direct person to person contact rarely leads to spreading of tinea cruris.
III. Treatment:
  • Tinea cruris usually clears up quickly when antifungal medicines are applied twice daily to the skin. If it doesn't, you may need two to three weeks of treatment with the antifungal antibiotic, griseofulvin, taken by mouth. Tinea cruris is only one cause of groin itching. If your rash does not improve, please return for further evaluation. You can help prevent recurrences by drying thoroughly after bathing, wearing loose cotton underwear, and dusting a bland powder such as baby powder on your groin once or twice daily.

Tinea Infections: Athlete's Foot, Jock Itch and Ringworm What is tinea? Tinea is a fungus that can grow on your skin, hair or nails. As it grows, it spreads out in a circle, leaving normal-appearing skin in the middle. This makes it look like a ring. At the edge of the ring, the skin is lifted up by the irritation and looks red and scaly. To some people, the infection looks like a "worm" is under the skin. Because of the way it looks, tinea infection is often called "ringworm." There really isn't a worm under the skin, though. How did I get tinea? One of every five persons gets a fungus infection at some time. You can get a fungus infection by touching a person who has one. Some kinds of fungus live on damp surfaces, like the floors in public showers or locker rooms. You can easily pick up a fungus there. You can even catch a fungus infection from one of your pets. Dogs and cats, as well as farm animals, can be infected with a fungus. Often this infection looks like a patch of skin where fur is missing. What areas of the body are affected by tinea infections?

Jock Itch and Prostatitis
Jock Itch Jock Itch is an infection of the groin by the fungus which causes athlete's foot. The fungus is more likely to grow in conditions of increased heat and humidity common among male athletes who wear jock-straps. However, this condition is not limited to male athletes; women can also be infected. Some of the symptoms are burning, itching, and red, scaly lesions. Treatment involves the applications of such medicines such as Micatin, Cruex, Desenex, Lotrimin, or Tinactin until the rash clears; the infection may reoccur if the medication is not applied long enough. In addition, the groin area should be kept dry and clean and absorbent cotton underwear should be worn. Prostatitis Prostatitis is an inflammation or infection of the prostate, the organ between the bladder and the penis through which urine passes and the source of fluid found in semen. Prostatitis may result from a bacterial infection or sexually transmitted disease and is treatable by a course of antibiotics. The symptoms of Prostatitis include burning, discharge, fever, chills, and difficulty urinating.

Vomiting and Diarrhea JOCK ITCH (TINEA CRURIS) What is Tinea Cruris? Tinea cruris, or "jock itch", is a superficial fungus infection of the groin and upper inner thighs which most commonly starts in hot humid weather. It is caused by common fungus organisms that grow easily in warm, moist areas of the skin. A rash appears which is red to tan or brown in color, slightly scaly, and usually has a fairly sharp and distinct margin. There may be central clearing. It usually does not affect the scrotum and penis. Not every groin rash is due to fungal infection. Intertrigo (mechanical rubbing, and moisture), psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, candidal (yeast) infections, and several other skin diseases can mimic fungal infections of the groin. Back to Top Treatment Antifungal creams may be required. Miconazole cream can be purchased over the counter. If that is not helpful, several prescription creams are available from your health care provider in Student Health Services. These creams should be applied once or twice a day in a thin layer, spreading the cream at least a half inch beyond the margin of the rash. Treatment should be continued for one week after the rash goes away to prevent reoccurrences. If your rash is still present after 1 month, see your physician. Change in creams or oral medications may be needed.

Severe infections, frequently recurring infections, or infections lasting longer than two weeks may require further treatment by your doctor. Stronger prescription medications, such as those containing ketoconazole or terbinafine, or oral antifungals may be needed. Antibiotics may be needed to treat bacterial infections that occur in addition to the fungus (for example, from scratching the area).
