    Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Once, just once, you’d like your digestive system to work the way it’s supposed to. But nothing’s ever easy. Either you’re constipated or you have diarrhea. You have terrible gas. And your stomach starts to ache after almost every meal. If your doctor has ruled out other possible causes, you could have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Sometimes called spastic or nervous colon, it’s the most common disorder among people with gastrointestinal problems. People with IBS have a difficult time staying regular and often complain of pain somewhere in the digestive system after eating. The good news is that IBS is not dangerous. The natural remedies in this chapter—in conjunction with medical care and used with your doctor’s approval—may help prevent or relieve IBS, according to some health professionals.

    Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) isn't something people talk about a lot. But if you have IBS you aren't alone; it is quite common. IBS causes crampy pain, gas, bloating, constipation and/or diarrhea. It isn't colitis, spastic colon or bowel disease. IBS does not cause an inflammation of the colon and does not lead to more serious conditions such as Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD includes Crohn's and Ulcerative Colitis) or colon cancer. (Read about " Crohn's " " Ulcerative Colitis " " Colorectal Cancer ") Causes and symptoms It is much easier to list the symptoms of IBS than give a cause. That's because the cause is unknown. Unfortunately that also means there is no cure, according to the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA). IBS can be very uncomfortable, causing deep cramps in the lower abdomen. They sometimes come on unexpectedly and in awkward situations. IBS is often thought to have stress related triggers, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). But NIDDK adds that research indicates that the colon muscle of people with IBS appears more sensitive and can begin to spasm after only mild stimulation. Some foods have also been shown to cause reactions. Foods such as chocolate, milk products or large amounts of alcohol are known offenders, says AGA. People with IBS are often encouraged to keep a diary of the foods they eat to try and identify triggers.

  • What Is It? Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common but poorly understood disorder that causes a variety of symptoms including abdominal pain, diarrhea and/or constipation, bloating, gassiness and cramping. Because these symptoms may be caused by a number of different bowel diseases, IBS is usually diagnosed only after your doctor rules out the possibility of a more serious problem.

Researchers say that over the last two decades, the incidence of serious gastrointestinal disorders, including IBS, has risen significantly. While part of the increase can be attributed to greater awareness of the disorder, other factors are also likely involved. UPMC and other leading centers are trying to learn more about why this is occurring. In IBS, an over-sensitive colon causes chronic, intermittent abdominal pain and discomfort, often severe enough to interfere with daily activities. Approximately 70 percent of IBS sufferers are women, and many sufferers are undiagnosed. Steve Abo, MD

IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME A symptom of irritable bowel syndrome is a cramping, tight feeling in the abdomen, particularly after a meal. This is accompanied by irregular bowel movements with alternating hard movements (constipation) and diarrhoea. It is not known exactly why irritable bowel syndrome occurs but it is known that all kinds of factors have their influence on intestinal movement. The movement may be either large or small. This is why diarrhoea alternates with constipation. The complaint can also be caused by the wrong choice of food and lack of physical exercise. SELF-CARE
    What you can do yourself
Eat low fat and high-fibre foods. You may also add extra fibre to your food (ask for this at the pharmacy). Eating enough wholemeal bread, fruit, raw vegetables, lean meat or fish is often quite adequate. Ensure that you drink enough. This means 3 pints (1.5 litres) per day (minimum) or about 10 cups or 6 glasses. Take regular physical exercise. For instance, where there is the choice always walk, or go running or take at least three quarters of an hour's walk each day. Eat regularly and go to the toilet as soon as you feel the need. Consider whether stress might be having an influence (see section about

The symptoms are often worsened by emotional stress
Digestive System Irritable bowel syndrome is characterized by a combination of abdominal pain and altered bowel function. There are many possible causes. For instance, there may be a disturbance in the muscle movement of the intestine or a lower tolerance for stretching and movement of the intestine. There is no abnormality in the structure of the intestine.

The diagnostic Rome II Criteria suggests that for a diagnosis of IBS the patient should have at least 12, weeks of symptoms, which need not be consecutive, in the past 12 months of abdominal discomfort or pain that has 2 of 3 features: Relieved by defecation, and/or onset associated with a change in frequency of stool and/or onset associated with a change in form (appearance) of stool. Newer diagnostic tools like fMRI may play an increasing role in the proper, timely diagnosis of IBS and help rule out more significant organic disease. Study of pain thresholds and visceral hypersensitivity suggests a strong modulatory role is played by the central nervous system. Recent advances in pharmacotherapy with 5-HT3 Receptor Antagonists and 5-HT4 Receptor Agonists may offer better results to treatment in the future. Often IBS is just a mild annoyance, but for some people it can be disabling. A large number of patients are able to control their symptoms through medications prescribed by their physicians, diet, and stress management. IBS has not been shown to lead to any serious, organic diseases. No link has been established between IBS and chronic organic bowel disease or cancer.

There are many alternative treatments available for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). However, there is no substitute for lifestyle modifications and dietary changes. Exercise caution when considering alternative therapies. Steps: Consider taking enteric-coated peppermint oil capsules. In a small study of IBS sufferers, 71 percent reported a reduction in irritable bowel symptoms after taking peppermint oil capsules. Think about hypnosis. In a small study of IBS sufferers, 60 percent of patients said their symptoms improved after using hypnosis. Look into stress management courses. In a small study of IBS sufferers, two-thirds reported a reduction in IBS symptoms after taking stress management classes. Try a lactose-free diet. Irritable Bowel Syndrome IBS Diet
Written by Gloria Tsang R.D. Irritable Bowel Syndrome IBS is more prevalent than we think. The primary symptom of IBS is abdominal pain and cramp after eating - resulting in diarrhea, constipation, gas or bloating. Some may find mucous in the feces. These symptoms usually persist for at least 90 days before an IBS diagnosis is considered. Most people only have mild symptoms, and fortunately, a proper diet can usually minimize symptoms.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome IBS Diet and Nutrition
    • Eat small frequent meals
    • Drink lots of fluid (8 - 10 servings daily)
    • Eat a high fiber diet. Click here for a list of high fiber foods . Your doctor may also suggest laxative with psyllium to alleviate constipation or reduce diarrhea
    • A low fat diet will also help to decrease contractions of the intestines right after meals
    • Limit caffeine, alcohol and sorbitol (a type of sweetener) as these may exacerbate symptoms. Click here for a list of food products containing sorbitol
    • Exclude gas-producing foods such as cabbage-family vegetables (broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and brussels sprouts), dried peas and lentils, onions and chives, peppers and carbonated drinks

Determining the correct diagnosis is essential for effective treatment. Read more about diagnosis of IBS
    Treatment Options
The primary goal for treatment is to reduce symptoms. This can often be accomplished with stress management techniques or changes in diet.
